Chapter 115: Your Majesty

The Emperor arrived at the doorway to find Reid, Jayden, and Logan still gathered close around the bed, the room carrying an odd, settled quiet that felt nothing like the desperate vigil he’d braced himself for.

Julian’s eyes found him immediately, calm and unhurried, expression settled into something composed and unreadable that the Emperor had never once seen him wear before.

"long time no see," Julian said. "Your Majesty."

The Emperor froze in the doorway, something in his chest stuttering hard at the words. Not the sharp, cutting defiance he remembered. Not the flat, unimpressed refusal that had once told him, without hesitation, exactly where to put his crown. Just calm, careful formality, delivered with the same distant politeness Julian might have offered a stranger.

’Your Majesty,’ the Emperor thought, disbelief settling cold and strange through his chest. ’he’s never once called me that. not since the day we met.’

"Julian," he managed finally, stepping fully into the room, voice rougher than he intended. "you’re awake."

"apparently," Julian said, the same faint, wry note from earlier threading through the word, though the formality didn’t fully leave his tone. "six weeks, I’m told."

The Emperor crossed the room slowly, studying Julian’s calm, composed features with careful, searching attention, some old, familiar dread crawling up his spine despite the overwhelming relief still crashing through him. He’d expected insults. He’d expected the sharp, unbothered defiance that had first made him fall for this man in the first place. He hadn’t expected this — polite, distant, formal in a way that felt, disturbingly, like talking to someone who barely knew him at all.

’is this real,’ he thought slowly, uncertainty tangling hard with his relief. ’is this actually Julian, or did something happen to him during those six weeks that changed something fundamental. did whatever he survived take something from him that I can’t get back.’

"how are you feeling," the Emperor asked carefully, settling into the last available chair near the bed, watching Julian’s face for any crack in the composed, careful stillness.

"tired," Julian said. "confused, mostly. I’m told a lot’s happened while I was out."

"a great deal," the Emperor said slowly, still searching Julian’s expression for something familiar, something that matched the memory of a man who’d once told him, flat and unbothered, exactly what he could do with his marriage proposal. "Julian, I need to ask you something, and I need you to answer honestly."

"go ahead," Julian said, calm and pleasant, watching him with that same unreadable, composed patience.

"are you actually you," the Emperor said finally, voice cracking slightly on the words despite his best efforts to hold them steady. "because the man I remember never once called me ’Your Majesty’ without an insult trailing right behind it, and right now, I genuinely don’t know what to make of the silence where that insult should be."

Something shifted behind Julian’s calm expression, faint and difficult to read, and for one long, suspended moment the Emperor genuinely feared the answer.

Then Julian’s mouth curved, slow and familiar, into something that finally, properly resembled the sharp, unbothered defiance the Emperor remembered.

"relax," Julian said, voice dropping the careful formality entirely, something warmer and far more familiar bleeding back through it. "I’m still me. I just wanted to see how long it’d take before you started panicking."

The Emperor’s breath left him in a rush, something between a laugh and a groan escaping despite himself. "that’s not funny," he said, though the relief crashing through his chest made the words come out far less stern than he intended.

"it’s a little funny," Julian said, something genuinely warm cutting through his exhaustion now, the calm, unbothered mask he’d been wearing since waking finally cracking into something closer to the man Reid and Jayden and Logan had all fallen for. "you should have seen your face."

Reid let out a short, disbelieving laugh from where he still sat gripping Julian’s hand, some of the tension bleeding visibly out of his shoulders. "he’s definitely still him," he said, something fond and exhausted threading through the words.

"I heard everything," Julian said, turning his attention back toward the Emperor now, something more serious settling behind his eyes despite the lingering warmth. "not just theirs. yours too."

The Emperor went very still.

"the war room," Julian continued quietly. "the night you sat alone, thinking nobody could hear you. I heard that too."

The Emperor’s jaw tightened, old vulnerability crossing his exhausted features, something he clearly hadn’t prepared himself to have confirmed after weeks of careful, uncertain hoping. "then you know," he said slowly, "exactly what I said."

"I do," Julian said simply.

The room fell quiet, Reid, Jayden, and Logan all watching the exchange with careful, uncertain attention, none of them quite sure whether to give the two of them privacy or stay put through whatever came next.

"I’m not going to pretend that doesn’t complicate things," Julian said finally, voice steady despite the weight of the moment. "you tried to claim me before any of this happened, Your Majesty. tried to force a marriage on me the same day you were still learning my actual name properly. that’s not something I forget just because you said something softer while you thought I couldn’t hear it."

"I know," the Emperor said quietly. "I don’t expect you to forget that. I wouldn’t ask you to."

"but," Julian continued, something faintly, cautiously warmer threading through his careful tone now, "the way you talked to me that night, alone, with nobody to perform for — that was different. I heard the difference."

The Emperor’s breath caught, something fragile and hopeful cutting through his composed exterior.

"I’m not making any promises," Julian said, firm despite the warmth. "not to you. not yet. same as everyone else in this room, honestly. but I’m not writing you off either. that’s more than I would have said six months ago, so take it for what it’s worth."

"it’s worth quite a lot," the Emperor said quietly, something raw and grateful threading through his voice.

Julian studied him a moment longer, calm and unhurried, before finally, deliberately shifting the conversation toward more practical ground. "now," he said, "somebody needs to actually catch me up. six weeks is a lot to have missed, and I’d rather hear it from all of you than piece it together secondhand."

Reid straightened, exchanging a brief, uncertain glance with Jayden and Logan before nodding slowly. "where do you want us to start."

"everything," Julian said. "the entity. whatever’s happened since it retreated. and," his expression sharpened slightly, something colder cutting through the warmth, "Xavier and Ian. I want to know exactly what’s happened to them since I got away."

The room settled into careful, focused quiet, all four men exchanging glances before Reid finally began, slow and deliberate, laying out everything that had transpired across the six long weeks Julian had spent lost somewhere beneath the surface of consciousness — the entity’s promise to return, the aftermath of the capital’s devastating assault, and, though none of them yet knew the full extent of it, the horror that had been forged from two brothers who’d once fought so bitterly over Julian’s affection, now hollowed out into something far more dangerous than either had ever been before.
