Chapter 73: A Different Kind of Deal

Julian spent the night turning Ian’s warning over and over, and by morning, he’d discarded the approach entirely.

’he’s right,’ Julian thought, watching pale light creep slow across the stone ceiling. ’soft resignation doesn’t work on someone who doesn’t want anything soft from me. he doesn’t care if I hate him less. he doesn’t need my affection, my gratitude, any of it. so stop offering him things he doesn’t want.’

He thought of every hardened survivor he’d ever negotiated with back on the wall... the scavengers who wouldn’t trade for sentiment, only for something concrete, something that actually benefited them. Ian was exactly that kind of animal, dressed up in a human face.

’give him a transaction instead,’ Julian thought. ’something that makes sense to him. cost and benefit. nothing pretending to be more than that.’

When Ian visited again two nights later, silent and unhurried as always, Julian didn’t perform exhaustion or gratitude at all.

"I want to make you an offer," Julian said flatly, the moment the door shut behind him.

Ian’s flat gaze sharpened slightly, some faint interest flickering behind his usual detachment. "an offer."

"you don’t care about my feelings," Julian said. "fine. I stopped pretending you would. but you do care about control. predictability. keeping this situation stable without wasting resources managing me." He held Ian’s gaze steady, refusing to let anything crack through his own composed exterior. "I’ll give you exactly that. cooperation. no more attempts to manipulate you emotionally, since you’ve already proven that doesn’t work. in exchange, I want something concrete."

Ian studied him for a long, silent moment, something calculating shifting behind his flat eyes. "you want something in exchange for behaving," he said slowly. "an interesting negotiation, given you have very little leverage to offer."

"I have exactly one thing you actually want," Julian said. "predictability. right now, you’re spending effort watching me, suspecting me, adjusting your brother’s behavior around me. that’s resources spent managing uncertainty. give me something small... more consistent access to the washroom, maybe, or actual books instead of staring at this ceiling all day... and I’ll stop giving you reasons to watch me so closely. that’s not manipulation. that’s just math."

Something in Ian’s expression shifted, subtle but real, the flat detachment giving way to something closer to genuine consideration. "you’re proposing a stable equilibrium," he said slowly. "rather than continued conflict."

"exactly," Julian said. "you get less to manage. I get slightly less miserable. neither of us has to pretend the other one’s feelings matter, because they don’t."

Ian was quiet for a long moment, turning the offer over with the same clinical precision he applied to troop movements and casualty reports. "acceptable," he said finally. "on a trial basis. continued cooperation earns continued privileges. any deviation ends the arrangement immediately, and I will not extend the same patience twice."

"understood," Julian said. Ian left without further ceremony, and Julian let out a slow, careful breath once the door sealed shut, something grim and satisfied settling behind his exhaustion.

’wow just like that,’ he thought, ’it actually worked.’

---

Xavier, by contrast, remained exactly as easy to work as he’d always been.

"you seem more settled today," Xavier observed during his next visit, warmth threading unmistakable through his voice as he studied Julian’s carefully calm demeanor.

"I’ve had time to think," Julian said, letting something soft and thoughtful color his tone. "about everything. about you."

Xavier’s whole posture shifted, hope bleeding visible through his usual composed possessiveness. "and?"

"you’re not what I expected," Julian said carefully, choosing each word with deliberate precision, walking the line between believable and too far. "cruel, sometimes. terrifying, honestly. but there’s something underneath that, isn’t there. something that actually wanted more than just... taking."

Xavier’s breath caught slightly, and Julian felt a cold, calculating satisfaction settle deep in his chest watching the effect land exactly as intended.

"I’ve wanted more than taking since the very beginning," Xavier said quietly, voice rough. "I know that’s difficult to believe."

"tell me about before," Julian said gently, careful to keep the request sounding like curiosity rather than extraction. "before you became this. before Ian. what was it like."

Xavier hesitated, something old and complicated flickering behind his expression, before slowly, cautiously, beginning to talk ...fragments at first, careful and guarded, but gradually loosening the longer Julian listened with patient, feigned warmth.

"the territory used to be smaller," Xavier admitted at one point, voice distant. "before we consolidated the outer settlements. Ian handles most of the northern operations now, expanding our reach. I focus on..." he glanced toward Julian, something possessive and fond crossing his expression, "...more personal matters."

Julian filed the information away carefully, expression never shifting from soft, patient interest. ’northern operations. expansion. that’s more than I had an hour ago.’

"does that ever bother you," Julian asked carefully, "him handling so much on his own? feels like you’re carrying a lot alone in here, even with a brother."

Something tightened behind Xavier’s expression, old frustration surfacing despite himself. "Ian doesn’t need anyone," he said, voice edged with something bitter. "never has, even before all this. I used to think that made him stronger. now I think it just made him easier to become what we are."

Julian kept his expression carefully sympathetic, filing away every fragment, every crack in the composed facade Xavier usually wore. ’there it is. real friction. real resentment. that’s something I can use.’

"that sounds lonely," Julian said softly.

"it is," Xavier admitted, quieter now, something raw bleeding through his usual possessive confidence. "it’s part of why..." he stopped himself, jaw tightening, before forcing a careful, deliberate smile back into place. "it doesn’t matter. you don’t need to hear about that."

"I want to," Julian said gently, and meant the calculation behind it completely, even as guilt twisted faint and unwelcome somewhere beneath his careful performance. "I’m not going anywhere, remember? might as well actually know you."

Xavier’s expression softened further, something dangerously close to genuine hope settling behind his eyes, and Julian held the gaze steady, hating every second of it, cataloging every fragment of information with the same cold, methodical focus he needed to survive whatever came next.

---

That evening, alone again, Julian let the careful, performed warmth finally drop from his expression, exhaustion and quiet self-loathing settling heavy in its place.

’I hate this,’ he thought, staring at the chain locked around his ankle. ’I hate every second of pretending. but though it’s working. Ian’s giving me actual room to move. Xavier’s handing me information without even realizing it.’

He thought of the reader’s instinct buried somewhere deep in his own strategy without him fully naming it that way... never show Ian anything he could exploit, never let him see genuine emotion land. Make Xavier depend on him instead, make him talk, make him bleed information exactly the way loneliness always made people bleed it, slow and unguarded, if you were patient enough to wait for the cracks.

’northern operations,’ Julian thought again, turning the phrase over carefully. ’Ian’s building something up there. expanding. that matters. that’s the kind of thing Reid and the others would need to know, if they’re even still looking.’

He closed his eyes, exhaustion dragging at him hard, but underneath it, for the first time in what felt like weeks, something sharper and more purposeful than despair had finally settled into place.

’keep going,’ he told himself. ’keep them both exactly where you need them. and when the moment comes, use every single piece you’ve gathered.’
