Chapter 72: Harder Than I Thought

Julian caught it during Xavier’s fourth visit... a flicker of something careful behind his usually open, possessive warmth, a pause half a second too long before he answered a simple question, a glance toward the chain that lingered slightly longer than casual curiosity should require.

’he’s watching me differently now,’ Julian thought, keeping his own expression carefully neutral even as unease coiled tight in his chest. ’either he’s starting to suspect something himself, or Ian’s said something to make him look closer.’

He kept the performance steady, careful not to overcorrect, not to give away the fact that he’d noticed anything at all. But underneath the calm, something sharper was already turning over fast.

’if Xavier’s onto it,’ Julian thought, ’or if Ian’s already told him what to look for, then soft resignation isn’t going to hold much longer. I need something bigger. something that actually convinces them both, not just the one who wants to be convinced.’

He didn’t get the chance to plan further before nightfall brought a visitor he hadn’t expected.

The door opened without preamble, and Ian stepped inside, alone this time, none of his brother’s careful, possessive hovering in the way he crossed the room, simply direct and unhurried, settling into the chair Xavier usually occupied with the same flat, clinical stillness he brought to everything.

"you’re up to something," Ian said, without any greeting at all, studying Julian with cold, assessing eyes. "and whatever it is, I don’t intend to allow it."

Julian kept his expression carefully confused, letting a beat of silence pass before answering. "I’m not up to anything," he said. "I’m not hiding anything either."

Ian didn’t blink. "you’ve changed your entire demeanor over the course of a week. resignation. gratitude. softness where there was only defiance before. that isn’t consistent with everything I’ve observed about you since you arrived."

Julian let out a slow, careful breath, forcing something tired and worn into his expression instead of the sharp calculation actually running underneath it. "I’ve been held for almost a month," he said, voice cracking slightly, the exhaustion behind it not entirely manufactured even now. "chained. watched every second of every day. I just... I needed some air. some space that didn’t feel like this room. is that really so suspicious to you?"

’will this even work on him,’ Julian thought, watching Ian’s flat, unreadable expression for any crack at all. ’if this was Xavier, I think he’d have felt something. pity, maybe, or at least doubt sharp enough to second-guess himself. this one...’

Ian studied him for a long, silent moment, expression utterly unmoved. "an interesting attempt," he said finally, voice flat. "emotional appeals work well on my brother because he wants them to work. he’s spent weeks convincing himself you might eventually want him back, and desperate hope makes for very poor judgment."

Julian’s stomach tightened, but he kept his face carefully neutral.

"I don’t share that particular weakness," Ian continued, utterly unbothered, rising slowly from the chair. "I don’t need you to want anything. I only need you contained, and useful, and I don’t require your genuine cooperation to accomplish either of those things. so whatever performance you’ve constructed for my brother’s benefit, save your effort. it won’t move me."

’damn harder than I thought,’ Julian thought grimly, watching him with careful, controlled stillness. ’this one doesn’t want anything from me the way Xavier does. there’s no ego to flatter here, no hope to exploit. just cold calculation, all the way through.’

"I’m not performing anything," Julian said, forcing steadiness into his voice despite the unease tightening in his chest.

"you are," Ian said simply, without heat, without accusation even, just flat, absolute certainty. "and I find it moderately interesting that you’d bother trying it on me at all, given how obviously it wouldn’t succeed. unless," something sharpened faintly behind his flat eyes, "you weren’t trying it on me specifically. you were testing whether I’d noticed, so you’d know exactly how much caution to exercise going forward."

Julian’s blood went cold. He hadn’t expected to be read that precisely, that fast, by someone who supposedly felt nothing at all.

"clever," Ian said, something that wasn’t quite a smile but carried the shape of one flickering briefly across his usually blank expression. "you adapt quickly. I can see why my brother finds you so difficult to release."

"I’m not trying to release anything," Julian said carefully. "I told you. I just wanted some space."

"you’re lying," Ian said, without malice, simply stating it the way he might state a measurement or a fact from a report. "I don’t particularly care why. I only care that you understand this clearly: whatever loosening of restrictions my brother has granted you, out of hope or affection or whatever emotion he’s convinced himself he’s feeling, I do not share his sentiment, and I will not extend the same leniency."

He moved toward the door, pausing only briefly before leaving.

"the chain stays at its current length for now," Ian said, "because altering it again might alert you to exactly how closely I’m watching. but know that I am watching. and the moment I confirm what I already suspect, whatever small freedoms you’ve earned from my brother’s foolishness will disappear entirely, along with any patience either of us has left for you."

The door closed behind him, and Julian sat there in the sudden, heavy silence, exhaustion and grim, cold calculation both settling deep in his chest.

’okay,’ he thought slowly, jaw tightening. ’okay. that one’s not working the same way. no ego. no hope. just cold math, all the way down.’

He glanced toward the chain, testing its length again despite already knowing exactly how far it reached.

’but he still hasn’t shortened it,’ Julian thought, some small, stubborn flicker of hope refusing to fully die despite everything Ian had just said. ’which means either he’s bluffing about watching this closely, or he wants to see exactly how far I’ll push before he decides I’m worth the effort of shutting down completely.’

’either way,’ Julian thought, jaw setting hard, ’I’ve come too far to just stop now. Xavier’s still convinced. Ian might suspect, but suspicion isn’t proof, and as long as I’ve got even a sliver of room to work with, I’m not giving up on this.’

He leaned back against the cold stone wall, closing his eyes, turning the new, harder problem over in his mind with the same patient, methodical focus that had kept him alive through three years of a collapsing world.

’I just need to figure out how to work around someone who doesn’t want anything from me at all,’ he thought grimly. ’that’s a very different kind of fight than the one I thought I was in.’
