Chapter 74: A Valley Pass

Xavier’s visits had settled into an easy rhythm over the following days, and Julian let the pattern deepen carefully, patiently, drawing more out of him each time with nothing more than soft questions and the appearance of genuine interest.

"you mentioned Ian’s expanding operations up north," Julian said one evening, keeping his tone light and idle, like the question mattered less than the company. "what’s that actually look like? I’ve been stuck in this room so long, I can’t even picture what’s out there anymore."

Xavier hesitated, some old instinct toward caution flickering behind his expression before the loneliness Julian had been carefully cultivating won out, the way it always did now. "he’s consolidating settlements," Xavier said. "converting entire villages rather than scattering individual conversions the way we did before. more efficient. more controllable."

Julian kept his expression carefully soft, curious rather than sharp. "converting entire villages," he repeated slowly. "that’s... a lot of people."

"he’s building something sustainable," Xavier said, something bitter threading through the words. "a proper foothold, not just scattered chaos. he says the old method wasted resources. I say it’s just easier for him to manage things that don’t talk back."

"is that safe," Julian asked carefully. "converting that many people at once. doesn’t that risk drawing more attention?"

Xavier’s mouth curved, something dark and pleased flickering behind his usual composed warmth. "he’s accounted for that," he said. "he’s positioned the operation around a natural chokepoint, a narrow valley pass that funnels anyone approaching from the south directly into range of his forces. anyone foolish enough to send people looking finds themselves trapped long before they find anything useful."

Julian’s chest went tight and cold, though he forced his expression to stay soft, curious. "clever," he said, voice carefully even.

’a chokepoint,’ Julian thought, filing the information away with cold, careful precision, a fresh, sick unease settling in his stomach even without knowing exactly what it meant yet. ’a valley pass, positioned to trap anyone coming from the south. if anyone’s been looking for me, if anyone’s tried sending people this way, that’s exactly the kind of thing that would get them killed before they ever found anything useful at all.’

"you sound frustrated with him," Julian said gently, steering the conversation back toward the crack he actually wanted to widen.

Xavier’s jaw tightened. "he thinks patience and precision solve everything," he said. "he doesn’t understand that some things require more than correct calculation. he never has."

"that must be hard," Julian said softly, "working so closely with someone who doesn’t see things the way you do."

"it is," Xavier admitted, quieter now, and Julian watched something shift behind his expression, resentment and loneliness both bleeding through in equal measure. "he’s never once asked whether I actually wanted any of this. the expansion. the villages. any of it. he simply decided it was the correct strategy and proceeded, the same way he decides everything."

Julian kept his face carefully sympathetic, though his mind was already racing far ahead, cataloging every fragment, every crack, every piece of the picture slowly assembling itself.

’a valley pass. positioned south of the villages, funneling approach routes directly into range. if anyone’s still searching for me... if Reid, if any of them are still out there trying... that’s information that could save their lives before they ever walk into it blind.’

"I’m sorry," Julian said quietly, and hated how easily the words came, how naturally the performance had started fitting itself around genuine, complicated feelings he didn’t want to examine too closely. "that sounds lonely."

"it is," Xavier said again, softer this time, and reached out, brushing his knuckles gentle against Julian’s cheek. Julian let it happen, keeping his expression soft and unbothered, burying the revulsion down deep where it couldn’t reach the surface.

"thank you," Xavier murmured, "for listening. nobody else does, anymore. not really."

---

Julian turned the information over long after Xavier left, alone in the quiet dark, mind working fast and sharp despite the exhaustion still dragging at every limb.

’a valley pass. south approach. I don’t know if anyone’s even still looking for me. I don’t know if this information will ever reach anyone at all. but if there’s even a chance it could save someone’s life, I have to find a way to get it out.’

He thought of Reid’s promise in that clearing, weeks and weeks ago now, fierce and certain... *we never stopped looking, not for one single day.* He didn’t know if that promise still held. He didn’t know if anyone was even alive to still be searching. But some old, stubborn part of him refused to let the possibility go, refused to simply assume the worst when he had no actual proof of it either way.

’this has to reach them somehow,’ Julian thought, jaw tightening. ’if they’re still out there. if they’re still trying.’

[Host,] the System said quietly, breaking through his racing thoughts for the first time in what felt like ages, [this unit has been monitoring your progress. this information could prove valuable, assuming it can be transmitted.]

Julian’s breath caught. ’you’re back. Now that you have decided to show your damn face again.’

[Partially. this unit’s primary attention remains occupied elsewhere, though monitoring host’s situation has resumed. the fox will return fully when circumstances allow. for now, this unit recommends continuing to gather what intelligence you can. every fragment matters, regardless of whether host can currently confirm it will be used.]

’can you get word out,’ Julian asked, hope flaring sharp and sudden despite everything. ’the signal, like before. even something small.’

[Reserves remain insufficient for a full signal attempt. this unit will advise the moment that changes. until then, continue as you have been. patience has served you well so far.]

Julian let out a slow, uneven breath, some of the hope dimming but not extinguishing entirely. ’fine,’ he thought. ’okay. I will keep gathering. I will keep waiting for the moment it can actually matter, whether that’s tomorrow or a month from now.’

He closed his eyes, exhaustion finally dragging him down toward uneasy sleep, but underneath it, for the first time in longer than he could properly measure, something sharp and purposeful had settled into place where despair used to sit.
