Chapter 52: The Empty Train and the Shadow’s Surprise
Location: Kingdom of Sunderland - Vileblood Family Mansion Gates
The morning smog of Vanguard City was particularly thick, clinging to the towering wrought-iron gates of the Vileblood estate like a sickly yellow shroud. The time for departures had finally come.
Cain, now permanently back in his original male form—a tall figure in a sharply tailored dark suit, his dark, violet-streaked hair catching the muted light—stood on the cobblestone path. Beside him stood Sofia, Sebastian, Scarlet, and Zephyra. To blend in with the human capital, the Demon Generals had adopted more subdued human guises, though their terrifying auras were barely contained beneath the surface.
Gathered on the pristine stone steps were the mansion's loyal servants: the four maids and Henry, the elderly treasurer.
It was a chilling sight. Due to Sofia’s high-tier mind manipulation, the warmth, joy, and tears that had defined these servants just days prior had been completely overwritten. They stood in a perfect, rigid line. Their eyes were vacant, glassy, and completely emotionless. Their minds had been scrubbed to pure, unquestioning slates to protect them from the horrific reality of the demonic entities they served.
Beatrice, the head maid, took a single, mechanical step forward. She bowed, her movements stiff and completely devoid of her usual lively grace.
"We are always waiting for our Ladies' welcome," Beatrice recited in a flat, monotone voice. "We shall maintain the estate until your eventual return."
Henry, leaning slightly on his polished cane, bowed alongside her. "I will ensure that the kitchens are fully stocked, and I shall cook your favorite meals the exact moment you cross this threshold once more, My Ladies."
It was a merciful lie, yet it felt heavier than a curse. They were speaking to ghosts.
Sofia pulled the collar of her dark traveling coat up, her crimson eyes shadowed with a profound, quiet sorrow. She did not say a word in response. She simply turned on her heel and began walking down the fog-choked street, her dark hair blending into the mist.
Cain, Sebastian, Scarlet, and Zephyra followed in silence, leaving the perfectly still, mind-controlled servants waiting on the steps of an empty mansion.
Location: Vanguard City - Lower District Streets
They walked for several miles, navigating the labyrinthine, industrial streets until the gothic spires of the Vileblood estate completely vanished behind the curtain of smog.
Once they were absolutely certain they were out of range, Sofia stopped. She raised her hand and snapped her fingers. The sharp sound echoed through the alleyway, carrying a concentrated pulse of mana. Miles away, the absolute mind manipulation shattered, leaving the servants with only a vague, peaceful memory of their masters going on a long, indefinite journey.
Cain stuffed his hands into his trouser pockets, watching the Demon Lord’s shoulders drop a fraction of an inch in relief.
"Even for the supreme ruler of the Abyssal Realm," Cain remarked casually, his golden-ringed violet eyes fixed on her, "you are a surprisingly kind person, Sofia."
Before Sofia could respond, Scarlet popped up between them, her gothic lolita dress swishing aggressively.
"Of course she is!" Scarlet declared proudly, placing her hands on her hips and puffing out her chest. "Sofia-sama is the kindest, most perfect, most amazing Demon Lord in all of history! Anyone with eyes can see that!"
Cain slowly turned his head, staring down at the Abyssal Reaper with an expression of absolute, deadpan exhaustion.
"I didn't ask for your opinion, brat," Cain stated flatly.
Scarlet gasped dramatically, her crimson eyes widening before she scowled, puffing out her cheeks in a massive pout. "You—! You're so mean! Sofia-sama, the creepy guy is bullying me again!"
"What did you call me?" Cain narrowed his eyes, a vein throbbing in his temple.
"Enough, both of you," Sebastian intervened smoothly, stepping between the bickering pair. The demonic butler adjusted his spectacles, pointing his cane toward a colossal, hissing structure in the distance. "We have arrived at the Vanguard Grand Terminal. Allow me to brief you on the logistics of our journey."
They walked into the massive, open-air train station. The air pollution here was staggering, tasting heavily of burnt coal and copper.
"The magi-tech steam train we are boarding can only take us as far as the nearest border city to the Easternmost Region of Sunderland," Sebastian explained, his voice easily cutting through the deafening noise of the station. "The Eastern territory is vastly different from the industrialized West. It is far less populated, heavily forested, and incredibly mountainous."
As they approached Platform 4, they saw their transport: a massive, black-iron steam engine that looked more like an armored fortress on wheels than a passenger train.
"Interestingly," Sebastian noted, glancing at the ticket booth, "it appears we are the only passengers boarding this specific line today."
Cain raised an eyebrow. "An empty train? Why?"
"Recently, the number of travelers, merchants, and even Adventurers heading to the Eastern Region has plummeted," Sebastian replied, his eyes gleaming with analytical interest. "Reports indicate that a preternatural, highly dense fog has descended upon the eastern mountain passes. It scrambles compasses, disrupts mana-tracking, and causes severe spatial disorientation. Normal humans find it nearly impossible to travel through."
Cain smirked, a dark, satisfying amusement crossing his face. "A cursed fog keeping the humans away? That is absolutely perfect for us. The less collateral damage we have to worry about, the better."
Location: Aboard the Eastern Express - VIP Carriage
The whistle blew a deafening, earth-shaking note, and the colossal steam engine lurched forward, slowly dragging itself out of the smoggy grip of Vanguard City and into the rolling, desolate plains of the East.
Because the train was entirely devoid of other passengers, the group had commandeered the largest, most luxurious VIP carriage. It was outfitted with velvet sofas, dark mahogany tables, and large glass windows that offered a panoramic view of the passing, dreary landscape.
As the rhythmic clack-clack-clack of the tracks settled into a hypnotic beat, the shadows in the corner of the carriage began to writhe.
Zephyra, the Shadow Weaver, was seated elegantly near the window. The writhing shadows slowly crept up her leg, forming into the shape of a small, pitch-black raven. The shadow-bird leaned in, whispering soundlessly into Zephyra's ear before dissolving back into the darkness.
A slow, deeply unsettling smile crept onto Zephyra’s face, tugging at the corners of her mouth. Her eyes began to glow with a faint, toxic-purple hue.
Sofia, seated across from her, noticed the shift in ambient mana. "Is it something of importance, Zephyra?"
Zephyra unfurled her black lace fan, covering the lower half of her face to hide her creepy, widening grin. "My subordinate spies have just reported back from the deep East, Lady Sofia. It seems our infiltration of the local territories has yielded magnificent fruit."
Zephyra leaned forward, her voice dropping to an excited, breathy rasp. "The ancient Demon Fortress hidden in the mountains... my shadows have secured it. And they have prepared a rather wonderful surprise waiting for you there, Sofia-sama. A grand welcoming gift for the return of the Demon Lord."
Sofia raised a delicate eyebrow but chose not to press for details, knowing the Shadow Weaver’s penchant for dramatic reveals.
Meanwhile, on the adjacent sofa, the toll of Cain’s recent magical exertions was catching up to him. Maintaining the slime-body transformation for days to impersonate Lady Ashford had drained his internal stamina reserves more than he cared to admit.
He leaned his head back against the vibrating glass of the train window, crossed his arms over his chest, and promptly fell dead asleep. His breathing evened out, completely ignoring the terrifying demonic entities discussing war strategies just a few feet away.
Scarlet, who had been swinging her legs out of boredom, noticed Cain sleeping. A mischievous, wicked glint sparked in her crimson eyes.
She quietly slipped off her seat and crept over to him. She leaned in close, observing his peaceful, sleeping face. Slowly, she extended a pale finger and poked him directly in the cheek.
Squish.
Cain didn't move.
Scarlet frowned. She poked him again, slightly harder this time. Poke. Poke. Still nothing. Cain was absolutely, completely dead to the world, trapped in a deep, dreamless slumber.
"Boring," Scarlet muttered, puffing out her cheeks in yet another massive pout. She crossed her arms and stomped back over to her seat, slumping down in defeat. "The creepy guy is no fun at all when he's asleep."
Sofia watched the passing scenery, her crimson eyes reflecting the endless, graying plains. The rhythmic chugging of the train felt like a countdown clock ticking away the final hours of peace.
She placed a hand against the cool glass. Zephyra’s surprise at the Demon Fortress would be useful, undoubtedly. But Sofia’s mind was occupied by a far more terrifying question.
The Easternmost Region, Sofia thought, her eyes narrowing as the distant, jagged peaks of the mountains finally came into view on the horizon. The domain of the Goddess Kamiya’s protector. What kind of monster is waiting for us in that cursed fog? And how much blood will we have to spill to reach it?
