I Was Summoned to Die, so I’m Climbing the Pantheon for Revenge!

Chapter 53: The Hidden Fortress and the Mist-Mother

Location: Kingdom of Sunderland - Aboard the Eastern Express

The rhythmic shaking of the train gradually slowed, pulling Cain from the depths of a dreamless, restorative sleep. He blinked, his violet eyes with their glowing golden rings adjusting to the muted light of the VIP carriage.

"Did you sleep well, sleepyhead?"

Cain turned his head. Scarlet was leaning over the armrest of his velvet sofa, her face mere inches from his, a triumphant, teasing grin plastered across her features. She had clearly been waiting for the exact moment he opened his eyes.

Cain let out a quiet sigh, rubbing the back of his neck as he sat up. He ignored her teasing and looked out the reinforced glass window. The endless, graying plains had given way to a massive, sprawling cityscape nestled at the foothills of towering, snow-capped mountains.

"The train is stopping," Cain noted, his voice slightly raspy from sleep.

"We have arrived at Esterfield City," Sebastian announced, standing by the carriage door with his pocket watch in hand. "It is the final major settlement before the Easternmost boundaries. Prepare yourselves for a sharp drop in temperature."

When the heavy iron doors of the carriage hissed open, the freezing, crisp air of the East hit them instantly. It was a stark contrast to the suffocating, sulfurous smog of Vanguard City. Esterfield was bitterly cold, but strangely, the sky was relatively clear—the ominous fog that plagued the mountain passes had not reached the city limits.

As they stepped onto the freezing platform, the station officer—a bundled-up, elderly man—rushed forward, his eyes wide with shock. He frantically tipped his hat, completely flustered. "W-Welcome to Esterfield! Apologies, we were not informed that the VIP carriage had been booked! There are so few travelers these days..."

"Think nothing of it," Sebastian replied smoothly, handing the man a pristine gold coin. "We require no assistance."

As they exited the station, Cain activated his internal AI system, [Nova]. A sleek, blue holographic interface overlaid his vision, mapping the city's topography against the broader map of Sunderland.

Target location is less than fifty miles away, Cain thought, analyzing the data. He looked around the city. The architecture was imposing, built from heavy, dark stone to withstand harsh winters. Yet, for a city of this size, the streets were eerily empty. The native population was sparse, huddled indoors against the biting cold and the growing rumors of the eastern terror.

Sofia suddenly stopped walking. Her crimson eyes locked onto the far end of the plaza. "They are here."

Standing near the shadows of a grand clock tower were two figures.

Cain’s eyes narrowed. Nova immediately initiated a biometric scan.

[Target 1: Sylas. Race: Lich. Status: Demon General.]

[Target 2: Vane. Race: Human (Modified). Status: Demon General / Former Summoned Hero.]

Cain’s brow twitched slightly. A human who was originally a Summoned Hero, but had defected to join the Demon Realm? That was an unexpected variable.

As they approached, Sylas—a strikingly elegant woman with pale, almost translucent skin and intricate, necrotic runes etched into her cheeks—stepped forward and dropped to one knee.

"Our supreme ruler," Sylas said, her voice echoing with the hollow chill of the grave. "Your Demon Lord has returned to us."

Beside her, General Vane remained standing, frozen in place. He was a tall, battle-hardened man wearing heavy dark armor, but his eyes were wide, staring at Sofia without a single blink. He had sworn allegiance to the system of the Demon Lord, knowing only that the ruler was female. He had never expected the supreme entity of the Abyssal Realm to be so profoundly, terrifyingly beautiful.

Sylas cast a freezing glare at her companion. "Vane. Lower your eyes and show respect to Sofia-sama."

Vane violently flinched, snapping out of his daze, and immediately dropped to one knee, bowing his head deeply. "M-My deepest apologies, Lady Sofia. I was... overwhelmed by your presence."

"It is fine, Vane. Rise," Sofia said, her voice projecting the absolute authority of her title. "Your presence here means that all the Generals have answered the call?"

"Correct, Lady Sofia," Zephyra purred, stepping out from behind Sebastian. "Lord Malakor, The Iron Wall, and Xaroth, The Necromancer Lich, are currently holding the perimeter at the Fortress."

Sylas stood up, her cold eyes shifting from Sofia to the dark-suited man standing beside her. Much like Scarlet had during their first encounter, Sylas sensed the impossible.

"Sofia-sama," Sylas asked cautiously, her gaze locked onto Cain's golden-ringed eyes. "Who is this human? And why does his mana signature resonate with your own Demon Lord Aura?"

Sofia gestured gracefully toward Cain. "This is Cain. He possesses the exact same status as I do."

Sylas and Vane froze. Vane instinctively activated his own appraisal skill, a lingering trait from his days as a Summoned Hero. The result made the blood drain entirely from his face.

[Target: Cain]

[HP: ERROR]

[MP: ERROR]

[SP: ERROR]

[SKILLS: HIDDEN]

An 'Error' status meant the numerical value was too vast for the world's system to calculate. It was absolute infinity. The atmosphere in the plaza grew impossibly dense, the sheer weight of Cain's passive aura pressing down on the two Generals.

Cain shoved his hands into his pockets, his expression bored. "Let's skip the formalities. We are here to kill that stupid Megami. I need the strength of you high-ranking guys to pave the way. Understand?"

Sylas and Vane stared at Sofia, entirely bewildered by the human's casual disrespect toward a divine entity. Sofia simply nodded her confirmation.

"Then follow us," Vane swallowed hard, gesturing toward a narrow, unassuming alleyway between two stone buildings. "We will show you the way to the Fortress."

Location: The Eastern Demon Fortress

As the group walked down the alleyway, the stone walls suddenly rippled like water. The city streets of Esterfield vanished instantly, replaced by a dense, magical fog. Cain looked around, deeply impressed. The demons had woven a massive, localized spatial distortion field right under the humans' noses.

When the magical fog cleared, a colossal structure of jagged, obsidian-like stone loomed before them, carved directly into the side of a frozen mountain.

At the massive iron entrance gates stood two towering demon guards. They appeared human in shape, but their skin was a deep, bruising blue. As Sofia and Cain passed through the gates, the guards trembled violently, unable to withstand the pressure of two Demon Lord auras moving in tandem.

Inside the central war room, lit by floating braziers of green fire, two more figures awaited. Xaroth, a skeletal horror draped in tattered, shadow-woven robes, and Malakor, a hulking behemoth clad in impenetrable dark iron armor.

They immediately knelt before Sofia.

"Rise," Sofia commanded, taking her place at the head of the massive obsidian war table. "This is Cain. He is a crucial ally in eliminating the Goddess Kamiya, wielding strength equal to my own."

Xaroth and Malakor exchanged a brief, uneasy glance. Do we have a Mister and Miss Demon Lord now? they wondered simultaneously.

From the corner of the room, Zephyra the Shadow Weaver let out a low, amused chuckle. As a mind reader, the sheer confusion radiating from the mighty demon generals was highly entertaining.

"Enough pleasantries," Zephyra said, her smile fading into a chilling, serious line as she stepped up to the table. "Gather around. We have urgent matters to discuss."

Sofia, Cain, Sebastian, Scarlet, Sylas, Xaroth, Malakor, and Vane circled the glowing tactical map carved into the table.

"My shadow-spies have returned from the absolute zero-visibility zone," Zephyra reported, her eyes glowing a toxic purple. "The fog in the Easternmost Region is expanding at an alarming rate. We lost one spy completely. But the one who survived brought back a terrifying report. The Goddess's Guardian is not an angel. It is not a divine knight."

Zephyra slammed a physical photograph onto the table. It was black-and-white, blurry, and obscured by thick mist. "It looks like a giant whale."

Cain leaned forward. "A whale? In the mountains?"

"Allow me," Zephyra whispered. She ran her dark, manicured nails over the photograph. Dark magic bled into the paper. The fog in the image violently burned away, and color flooded the glossy surface, revealing the true horror of the beast.

Everyone around the table fell completely silent.

It was a monstrosity. The Brume-Carrier, or the Mist-Mother.

It was a massive, flying cetacean, estimated to be between sixty and eighty meters long. However, it was far leaner and more angular than a normal whale, resembling a grotesque cross between a humpback and a deep-sea gulper eel. Its skin was a mottled pale grey and translucent blue-white, resembling a bloated corpse floating in glacial water. Beneath its skin, its rib-like structures pulsed with a sickly, dim bioluminescence.

"It has no eyes," Zephyra pointed out, her voice dripping with morbid fascination. "It is entirely blind. Instead, it possesses six fleshy nostrils along its head that constantly exhale the cursed mist. The fog is its sensory organ. It 'feels' everything the mist touches. Its mouth is vertical, lined with clicking, rattling baleen plates. Its pectoral fins are elongated, jointed bone, capable of extending like insect legs."

"How does it feed?" Xaroth rasped, staring at the image.

"It doesn't eat flesh," Zephyra answered, her voice dropping to a whisper. "The surviving spy called it the 'Soul Pump'. It hovers over its prey and opens its ventral grooves. It creates a crushing pressure—a gravity-like suction. It feeds on memories, emotions, and thoughts. The spy reported feeling a literal hole in his mind where his childhood used to be. Furthermore, the creature's movements emit an infrasound lullaby. It creates a false sense of absolute calm, making its victims want to lie down and sleep in the fog while it descends upon them."

General Vane shuddered, his armor clanking. "And if we attack it?"

"It exhales dense bursts of fog that coalesce into ghostly, semi-transparent decoys of itself to confuse its attackers," Zephyra concluded. "But the most horrifying detail... the surviving spy noted that when the creature passed overhead, he saw the ventral grooves pulse. Inside its glowing belly, he saw faint, floating humanoid shapes. And one of them... possessed the exact face of his devoured companion."

A heavy, oppressive silence fell over the war room. The realization set in. The Goddess Kamiya hadn't placed a divine protector here; she had unleashed a localized, eldritch apocalypse.

"We shall call it the Brume Whale," Cain stated, his golden-ringed eyes staring coldly at the photograph. He felt no fear, only a calculating, deadly focus.

Sofia placed both of her hands flat on the obsidian table, her terrifying Demon Lord aura flaring to life, casting long, menacing shadows across the war room walls.

"Generals," Sofia commanded, her crimson eyes burning with absolute, lethal intent. "Prepare your legions. Prepare your magic. We are going to march into that fog, and we are going to grill this whale of the Goddess's puppet."
