I Was Summoned to Die, so I’m Climbing the Pantheon for Revenge!

Chapter 51: A Phantom’s Farewell and the Gathering Storm

Location: The Old Vanguard Gazebo - City Outskirts

The ambient hum of Vanguard City’s steam engines felt a million miles away. Here, high above the smog-choked streets, the only sound was the gentle rustle of the evening wind weaving through the white marble pillars of the forgotten gazebo.

Ashford took a few slow, deliberate steps toward the western edge, letting the cool breeze catch the dark, silken strands of her hair. The sun was bleeding its final, brilliant hues of crimson and gold across the horizon. Julian Vance remained seated on the stone bench, his breath caught in his throat. He didn’t dare speak, didn't dare shatter the fragile, dreamlike peace of the moment. He simply waited, his eyes locked onto her silhouette.

Slowly, Ashford turned back to face him.

She tilted her upper body slightly forward, her hands clasped delicately behind her back. At that exact moment, the dying sun found a break in the distant clouds, casting a pure, unadulterated beam of golden light directly upon her. It illuminated her pale porcelain skin, highlighted the deep, mesmerizing violet of her eyes, and bathed her gothic dress in a fiery, ethereal glow.

She looked impossibly, dramatically beautiful—a creature not born of this world, but painted by the heavens themselves.

Julian’s eyes widened, his heart hammering violently against his ribs. He was utterly paralyzed by the sight of her.

Then, Ashford smiled. It wasn't the polite, guarded, aristocratic smile she usually wore. It was a pure, honest, and profoundly real smile that reached her eyes.

"At the very least, Lord Julian," Ashford’s voice was soft, carrying a melodic melancholy that seemed to harmonize with the wind, "thank you. Thank you for liking someone like me."

Julian opened his mouth, but before he could form the words, Ashford tilted her head, her gaze piercing right through him. "But tell me... what if I were a monster? A creature of darkness hiding beneath this beautiful skin? Would you still harbor these feelings for me?"

Julian blinked, pulled sharply from his daze by the gravity of the question. He looked into those deep violet eyes, searching for the source of the question. And as he stared, a strange, inexplicable wave of sadness washed over him. His mind couldn't comprehend it, but his soul instinctively recognized the tragic, unfathomable chasm between them.

"Yes," Julian answered, his voice trembling but completely devoid of hesitation. "I would. Even if you were a monster, Lady Ashford, I would still care for you."

Ashford’s smile softened further, laced with a quiet, bittersweet sorrow. "You are too kind for this cruel world, Lord Julian. But you must know... after the sun sets today, we will not meet again. Not tomorrow, not next month. Forever."

Julian swallowed hard, fighting the stinging sensation behind his eyes. He stood up, taking a hesitant step forward, though he kept a respectful distance.

"It's okay," he whispered, a sad smile forming on his own lips. "I knew this was a fleeting dream when I asked. Just this moment... just being able to see you smile like that... it is the most precious moment of my life. I will take this memory with me to the grave. I will never forget it."

Ashford looked down at the marble floor. The guilt in Cain's chest flared, sharp and demanding. He was deceiving this pure-hearted man.

"What if..." Ashford murmured, her voice barely a whisper. "What if I am not the real Lady Ashford? What if the woman you are looking at is nothing more than an illusion? What would you think of me then?"

Julian shook his head gently, the golden light catching the tears brimming in his eyes. "Names do not matter. Titles do not matter. Whoever you truly are, you are you. You are a beautiful, soft, sweet, and incredibly kind soul who accepted the selfish, nonsense offering of a doomed man. That is all the truth I need."

A soft, genuine chuckle escaped Ashford’s lips. It was a sound of pure relief, and of ultimate resignation.

"I am going to say goodbye to you now, Lord Julian," Ashford said, taking a step backward into the deepening shadows of the gazebo. "Forever."

Julian bowed deeply, pressing his right hand over his heart in a perfect knight's salute. "Then... at least in the next life. May we meet under kinder stars."

"I hope so," Ashford whispered softly, turning her back to him. As she walked away, descending the stone steps into the Vanguard twilight, a silent, desperate prayer echoed in Cain’s mind: I pray that in the next life, the real Ashford is the one who finds you.

Location: Vileblood Family Mansion - Grand Foyer

When the heavy mahogany doors of the mansion clicked shut behind Ashford, the melancholic atmosphere was instantly replaced by an oppressive, terrifying density of demonic mana.

Standing in the grand foyer, surrounded by leather travel trunks, were the supreme rulers of the Abyssal Realm. Sofia Vileblood, dressed in a sleek, dark traveling coat, stood beside Sebastian. To her right, Zephyra the Shadow Weaver blended seamlessly into the unlit corners of the hall. And hovering near the center was Crimson Scarlet, casually tossing a small orb of destructive anti-matter between her hands like a toy.

They were fully prepared to leave Vanguard City.

As Ashford approached, Scarlet stopped tossing the orb and squinted her crimson eyes. She pointed an accusing finger at the noblewoman.

"Who is this?" Scarlet whined, her childish voice echoing in the massive hall. "I only know the creepy guy named Cain! Who is this cute girl? Make the creepy guy come back!"

Ashford rolled her eyes. Closing them for a brief second, Cain allowed the magical bindings to dissolve. His physical form temporarily lost its cohesion, turning into a shifting, sentient mass of dark, shadowy slime. In less than a second, the slime reshaped, solidifying back into the tall, dark-suited figure of Kyouya Kusanagi, now operating as Cain. His messy dark hair with violet streaks fell into place, and his violet eyes with their glowing golden rings snapped open.

Scarlet immediately puffed out her cheeks and scoffed, crossing her arms. "Ugh. Never mind. The creepy guy is back."

Cain ignored the loli Reaper, turning his attention to the Demon Lord. "Is everything in order? We are heading straight for the Easternmost Region of Sunderland to hunt the Goddess Kamiya's Guardian?"

"Yes," Sofia replied. But as she looked at Cain, her crimson eyes narrowed slightly. The motherly, observant gaze of the Demon Lord scanned his face, picking up on micro-expressions that hadn't been there a few hours ago.

"You've changed," Sofia noted softly.

Cain stiffened. "Excuse me?"

"I cannot quite place it," Sofia murmured, stepping closer. "It is not a physical alteration. But your voice... your demeanor... the way you carry the ambient mana around you. It is a fraction softer than before. Did something happen in the human market?"

Cain looked away, the image of Julian's tearful, earnest smile flashing in his mind. He forcefully buried the human emotion deep beneath the demonic aura he wielded. "You must have imagined it, Sofia. Nothing happened. Let's focus on the mission."

Sofia didn't push the issue, though Zephyra chuckled knowingly from the shadows.

Cain quickly shifted the topic, looking toward the demonic butler. "Sebastian. Have you confirmed the rumors? Are the Frontierra Summoned Heroes truly in Vanguard City?"

"Indeed, they are," Sebastian reported, his white-gloved hands resting over his cane. "I observed them from a distance. The group is led by the anomaly known as Shiori Asano, alongside Shota Nanase and several others. Furthermore, the rumors were entirely accurate: the Frontierra High Church has dispatched one of their elite Saintesses to act as their dedicated healer. They are currently residing in the Royal Palace of Summoned Heroes."

The room grew quiet. Sofia turned her gaze back to Cain.

"They are your former classmates, Kyouya Kusanagi," Sofia said, using his real, Earth-given name to emphasize the gravity of the situation. "Do you wish to meet with them before we depart? To explain your survival?"

Cain’s golden-ringed eyes hardened into cold, absolute resolve. The soft, empathetic human who had just spoken to Julian vanished entirely.

"No," Cain stated flatly. "I will not involve myself with them. They have chosen their path. They are the 'Heroes' summoned to save this world. I am not. I am Cain."

He adjusted the cuffs of his dark suit, his voice dropping to a dangerous, unyielding octave. "If they ever cross our path in the future, and if they stand against you, Sofia, I will not eliminate them... but I will make absolutely certain they never have the opportunity to face me. I will break their advance before it even begins."

Sofia smiled faintly, satisfied with his unwavering loyalty.

"A wise approach," Zephyra purred, stepping out of the shadows. The Shadow Weaver’s eyes glowed with toxic-purple anticipation. "But we have larger concerns than human children playing at being heroes. The Easternmost Region is heavily fortified by divine magic, but we are not without resources."

Zephyra unfurled her black lace fan, her creepy, ear-to-ear grin returning. "There is an ancient, dormant Demon Fortress hidden in the eastern mountain ranges. If we awaken it, we can rally enough demonic manpower to siege the Goddess’s Guardian directly. Furthermore, my shadow-spies are already infiltrating the local human settlements. Information is the lifeblood of warfare. We will know every weakness of the Guardian before we even strike the first blow."

"Excellent," Sofia commanded, her terrifying Demon Lord aura flaring to life, vibrating the very foundations of the mansion. "Then our time in Vanguard City is officially over. We march East. It is time to make a Goddess bleed."
