Dao Eternal

C34 - A Blade Between Life and Death

The rain had stopped hours ago, yet the forest floor remained slick beneath Ye Chen's boots as he descended the eastern slope of Azure Cloud Mountain. The sect had assigned him a simple task: deliver medicinal herbs to an elderly physician who lived in a small village beyond the mountain.

The mission should have taken half a day.

Instead, silence greeted him.

The village gates hung open.

No smoke rose from the chimneys.

Not a single dog barked.

Ye Chen slowed his pace.

His hand instinctively rested on the old farming knife at his waist. He had long since acquired a proper disciple's sword, yet he still carried his father's knife. It reminded him that every cultivator, no matter how high they climbed, began somewhere ordinary.

A faint metallic scent drifted through the air.

Blood.

He followed it into the village square.

Three wagons stood abandoned. Grain was scattered across the muddy road, and deep sword marks scarred the stone well in the center of the square.

There were signs of battle.

But no bodies.

A soft cry reached his ears.

It came from inside a collapsed storage house.

Ye Chen approached cautiously.

Beneath broken beams lay a young girl, no older than eight. Her ankle was trapped beneath a heavy timber, and her face was pale from fear.

"Don't move," Ye Chen said calmly.

He lifted the beam just enough for her to pull herself free.

Before she could thank him, his instincts screamed.

He threw himself sideways.

A black dagger buried itself in the ground where he had been standing only a heartbeat earlier.

A slow clap echoed across the empty square.

"You've improved."

The familiar masked man stepped from the shadows of the alley.

The same calm voice.

The same silver wolf emblem.

The same oppressive presence.

Ye Chen drew his sword.

"This wasn't a coincidence."

The assassin nodded.

"No."

"I knew the sect would send someone."

His eyes settled on Ye Chen.

"I hoped it would be you."

The little girl looked back and forth between them, terrified.

The assassin ignored her completely.

To him...

Only Ye Chen mattered.

Without warning, he vanished.

Ye Chen barely caught the movement.

Steel collided with steel.

The impact numbed his entire arm and forced him back several steps.

Too fast.

Far too fast.

The assassin smiled beneath his mask.

"Good."

"You're no longer frozen by fear."

He attacked again.

This time Ye Chen anticipated the strike, redirecting it instead of blocking it directly.

The blade scraped past his shoulder, tearing his robe but missing his flesh.

The assassin's eyes narrowed.

"You learn quickly."

"I have to."

Ye Chen answered between breaths.

"My enemies don't give second chances."

The battle continued through the ruined village.

Each exchange forced Ye Chen to think rather than react. He could not overpower his opponent. He could not match his speed.

So he searched for patterns.

Every experienced fighter had habits.

The assassin favored his left foot before lunging.

His shoulder dipped slightly before every feint.

His killing blows always came after forcing his opponent backward.

Small details.

Almost invisible.

Yet they were enough.

As the assassin lunged again, Ye Chen deliberately retreated exactly as before.

The assassin smiled.

He believed the boy had fallen into the same rhythm.

At the last instant, Ye Chen stepped to the side instead of backward.

The assassin's blade struck empty air.

For the first time...

An opening appeared.

Ye Chen did not hesitate.

His sword cut across the assassin's sleeve, drawing a thin line of blood.

Silence.

The assassin looked at the wound.

Then he laughed.

A genuine laugh.

"You've earned this."

He removed the silver wolf token from his belt and tossed it onto the ground between them.

"Keep it."

"One day..."

"You'll understand what it means."

Before Ye Chen could stop him, the assassin leaped onto a rooftop and disappeared into the gathering mist.

The village fell silent once more.

Ye Chen remained where he stood, breathing heavily.

His hands trembled.

Not from fear.

From realization.

He had not won.

The assassin had allowed the fight to end.

Yet...

For the first time since his village was destroyed...

Ye Chen had forced an enemy stronger than himself to bleed.

He slowly picked up the silver wolf token.

On its reverse side was a single ancient character engraved in black metal.

"Fate."

Far away, within a hidden palace buried beneath a mountain unknown to the world, an old man slowly opened his eyes.

The token in Ye Chen's hand had awakened.

And with it...

A game that had begun centuries before his birth had quietly resumed.
