C33 - Return to Azure Cloud Mountain

The journey back to Azure Cloud Mountain was quieter than the journey to Mist Valley.

No one spoke.

The laughter that had accompanied the disciples when they left the sect had disappeared. Even the forest seemed different. Every rustling leaf and every snapping twig caused their eyes to instinctively search the shadows.

Ye Chen walked at the rear of the group.

He wasn't looking behind.

He was looking around.

The assassin had taught him something without intending to.

The greatest danger was often the one you never saw.

---

By the time the disciples reached the mountain gate, twilight had settled over the peaks.

The gatekeepers immediately noticed their expressions.

"What happened?"

Zhao Feng answered calmly.

"The mission ended early."

Nothing more was said.

The disciples were escorted directly to the Hall of Affairs.

Inside, Elder Mo sat quietly behind a long wooden table. Several inner disciples stood on either side of him, recording every report.

One by one, each disciple recounted the events in Mist Valley.

Su Wan spoke of the dead deer.

Qin Hu described the overwhelming strength of the masked man.

Lu Jian admitted they had abandoned the mission.

Finally, Elder Mo looked at Ye Chen.

"You."

"What made you decide to retreat?"

Ye Chen answered without hesitation.

"The enemy wanted us to continue."

The hall fell silent.

Elder Mo leaned forward slightly.

"Explain."

"The deer was left where it would be discovered."

"The marks on the tree were meant to frighten us."

"The arrow blocked our path instead of killing us."

"He could have attacked us immediately."

"But he waited."

Ye Chen paused.

"He wasn't trying to complete a mission."

"He was studying us."

One of the inner disciples frowned.

"How can you be certain?"

Ye Chen met his gaze.

"Because..."

"...that's exactly what I would have done if I were stronger than my opponent."

Silence returned.

For the first time since entering the hall, Elder Mo smiled.

Not because the answer pleased him—

But because the boy had begun to think like someone who understood conflict rather than merely reacting to it.

---

The reports continued late into the evening.

After dismissing the disciples, Elder Mo remained seated while Zhao Feng closed the doors.

"You believe the Black Wolf Gang?"

Zhao Feng asked.

Elder Mo slowly shook his head.

"No."

"The Black Wolf Gang is capable of killing."

"But this..."

He tapped the table thoughtfully.

"...was a test."

"A very expensive one."

Zhao Feng's expression grew serious.

"Then someone higher is pulling the strings."

Elder Mo nodded.

"And that concerns me far more than the attack itself."

---

Meanwhile, Ye Chen returned to his room.

He placed his father's farming knife on the wooden table before sitting quietly beside the window.

Outside, the moon illuminated the sea of clouds below the mountain.

His thoughts drifted back to the masked man.

Not his strength.

His words.

"People die because someone stronger decides they should."

Ye Chen closed his eyes.

"If that's the law of this world..."

he whispered,

"...then one day I'll become strong enough to change it."

He did not realize those words were a vow.

Not born from revenge.

But from conviction.

---

Far above the outer disciple quarters, Elder Han stood alone beneath an ancient pine.

The mysterious groundskeeper approached silently.

"You heard the reports."

Elder Han nodded.

"What do you think?"

The old groundskeeper looked toward the lights of the disciple residences.

"The boy has crossed an invisible threshold."

Elder Han raised an eyebrow.

"What threshold?"

"He no longer asks..."

"Why did this happen to me?"

The old man smiled faintly.

"He has begun asking..."

"What should I do next?"

The mountain breeze stirred the branches overhead.

"That..."

the groundskeeper said,

"...is the difference between a survivor and someone destined to walk a great path."

In the darkness far beyond Azure Cloud Mountain, a raven landed upon the balcony of the Black Wolf Fortress.

The black-robed leader untied the message tied to its leg and read it in silence.

After a long pause, he folded the parchment.

"So he recognized the trap."

A faint smile spread across his face.

"Very well, Ye Chen."

"I'll stop treating you as a child."

The candle beside him flickered violently as a surge of killing intent filled the room.

"The next time we meet..."

"...you won't be running from my subordinate."

"You'll be facing the storm itself."
