C35 - The Silver Wolf Token
Night settled over Azure Cloud Mountain like a veil of ink. The training grounds, once filled with the sounds of clashing wooden swords and stern instructions, had long fallen silent. A cool breeze drifted through the outer disciple quarters, carrying with it the scent of pine and damp earth after the evening rain.
Inside a modest wooden room, a single oil lamp flickered gently.
Ye Chen sat cross-legged before the small table. His expression was calm, but his thoughts were anything but.
The events of Mist Valley replayed endlessly in his mind.
The abandoned deer.
The eerie silence.
The masked assassin.
And finally...
The silver token that had been deliberately thrown at his feet.
He slowly reached into his robe and removed it.
The token was no larger than his palm. Under the dim light, the black wolf engraved on its surface appeared almost alive. Every strand of its fur had been carved with astonishing precision, its eyes cold and predatory.
It did not resemble the crude insignia of a bandit gang.
It looked ancient.
Ye Chen turned it over.
On the reverse side was a single character.
Fate.
He gently traced the character with his thumb.
The metal felt strangely warm, as though it retained the body heat of its previous owner despite hours having passed.
"The assassin wanted me to keep it..."
he murmured.
"But why?"
If it were merely proof of identity, no sensible cultivator would leave it behind.
If it were bait, then accepting it meant walking into a trap.
Yet...
Something deep within his heart urged him not to destroy it.
Instead, he closed his eyes and steadied his breathing.
The Azure Cloud Foundation Manual taught that spiritual energy should never be forced recklessly into unknown treasures.
But curiosity had always accompanied those who sought the truth.
Carefully...
He guided a thin thread of spiritual energy from his dantian into the token.
Nothing happened.
Several breaths passed.
Then...
The character Fate shimmered.
A faint pulse spread through the metal, so subtle that Ye Chen almost believed he had imagined it.
The room grew unnaturally quiet.
Even the flame of the oil lamp stopped flickering.
The token suddenly became warm in his palm.
Not painfully hot.
Comfortably warm.
Like sunlight falling upon cold skin.
Ancient lines slowly emerged across its surface.
One.
Then another.
Soon dozens of delicate golden lines spread throughout the token, weaving together into a complex pattern unlike anything Ye Chen had ever seen.
His pupils contracted.
"It changed..."
The lines continued expanding until they formed what appeared to be part of a map.
Towering mountains.
A winding river.
Several strange symbols that resembled neither words nor formations.
Yet the image remained incomplete.
Large portions simply ended at broken edges, as though this token represented only one fragment of something much larger.
Before Ye Chen could study it further, the map disappeared.
The token returned to its ordinary appearance.
Silence filled the room once more.
His heartbeat quickened.
"What exactly are you...?"
No answer came.
Only the steady glow of the oil lamp.
---
Several thousand feet above the outer disciple quarters, Elder Han stood upon a lonely cliff overlooking the sea of clouds.
His eyes slowly opened.
He had sensed it.
A brief fluctuation.
Ancient.
Familiar.
Before he could investigate, another figure appeared beside him without disturbing the night air.
The old wanderer smiled faintly.
"You felt it too."
Elder Han nodded.
"The First Wolf Token."
"It has awakened."
Neither man looked surprised.
Instead, both gazed toward the faint light burning within Ye Chen's room.
"He activated it earlier than I expected," Elder Han said quietly.
The wanderer's eyes reflected the stars.
"Not because he is stronger."
"But because he asked the correct question."
Elder Han glanced sideways.
"What question?"
The old man smiled.
"He sought truth."
"He didn't seek power."
For a long moment, neither spoke.
The mountain breeze rustled through the ancient pines.
Finally Elder Han broke the silence.
"Should we retrieve the token?"
The wanderer slowly shook his head.
"If fate chose him to hold the key..."
"...then taking it away would only delay the inevitable."
---
Far away, beyond the borders of Azure Cloud Mountain, beneath an abandoned temple swallowed by the forest, an enormous underground hall lay hidden in darkness.
Rows of masked cultivators knelt silently.
No one dared raise their head.
At the far end of the hall stood a black throne carved from a single block of obsidian.
Upon it sat the Black Wolf leader.
His face remained concealed beneath a bronze mask.
A subordinate stepped forward and bowed deeply.
"My Lord."
"The First Wolf Token has awakened."
The hall became deathly silent.
The Black Wolf leader slowly opened his eyes.
"So..."
His voice echoed softly.
"The bearer has appeared."
Another masked cultivator asked cautiously,
"Shall we eliminate him before the other factions discover his existence?"
The leader chuckled.
A sound devoid of warmth.
"Kill him?"
He slowly rose from the throne.
"If he dies now..."
"...our enemies will simply wait for another bearer."
He descended the steps one by one.
"No."
"Let him grow."
"Push him."
"Corner him."
"Force him to become stronger."
His gaze swept across every kneeling figure.
"When the gate finally opens..."
"...only someone worthy will be able to cross it."
Every cultivator lowered their head.
"As you command."
---
Back on Azure Cloud Mountain, Ye Chen placed the token back into his robe.
He looked out through the open window.
The moon hung high above the endless sea of clouds.
For reasons he could not explain, he felt as though countless invisible eyes were watching him from beyond the darkness.
Not with hatred.
Not with kindness.
With expectation.
He tightened his grip on the token.
"If this secret is connected to my father's death..."
he whispered,
"...then no matter how dangerous the road becomes..."
"...I will uncover the truth."
At that exact moment, far beneath Azure Cloud Mountain, beyond layers of rock untouched for countless ages, a colossal stone gate trembled.
Dust drifted from its ancient carvings.
One rune near its center emitted a faint golden glow before fading once more.
From behind the sealed gate came a voice so old that it seemed to predate the mountains themselves.
"The first bearer..."
A long silence followed.
"...has awakened."
Then everything returned to stillness.
The world above remained unaware.
But fate had quietly begun to move.
