Chapter 24: MK Zero
"No, I’m too powerful," Rebbeca replied.
"Excuse me?" Alexia said.
"The MK Zero access band is special in that it can only be used by an individual who has yet to enter Genesis for the first time. That's because it’s designed to grow with its user."
"Grow with its user?" Adria repeated. “This isn’t Genesis; how can an actual growth-type item exist?”
"No, what I mean is this band is made from Mithrilium."
"What!" Adria said in surprise.
"You can't be serious?" Alexia asked while Sarah and Maria’s eyes widened in shock.
"Err Mithrilium? I have heard of Mithril but not this." John stated.
"Mithrilium is a newly discovered, very rare and precious metal that is only found in a very specific location and under certain conditions in Atlantia, in the crater of a volcano, just after an eruption." Rebecca began to explain. "The volcano must have an abundance of both mithril and orichalcum within it, as during a volcanic eruption these two precious materials somehow combine and create Mithrilium.
At the time, just after an eruption, when the lava level is at its lowest, a powerful magic user can use their magic to protect themselves enough to gather the Mithrilium. That’s why these four are so surprised; it's a very rare and precious crafting material."
Seeing John nod in understanding, Rebecca smiled before continuing, "Other than its rarity, what makes Mithrilium so sought after is its magic conductivity. You may already know this, but when someone uses their magic and imbues it into an item, there is never a complete transfer, as there is always some degradation or loss of the magical energy used.
This is just a natural phenomenon that occurs whenever we are sending magic power out of our body; a portion of it will always be lost and return to Atlantia. General magic items can be classified into two types. Do you know what they are?”
“Burst flow types and steady flow types, right?” John replied.
“Very good,” Rebecca smiled. "Let's start with burst flow types. A good example of these are weapons; the majority of weapons are burst flow types because you give it a sudden burst of energy. Let's use a magic gun, for example. You transfer a burst of energy into it to cause it, and in return it fires a magic bullet.
A good example of a steady flow is our access bands; they have a steady, continuous supply of magic power being fed into them, though the access bands get the magic from the world-encompassing spell and not the person wearing it, but the principle is the same.
As I am sure you're aware, mithril is the best magical conductor known to the general public. When it's a burst flow type made from mithril, say the magic gun from before, the mithril successfully transfers around sixty-five percent of the magic into the magic bullet. Ten percent is absorbed by the mithril itself, while the final twenty-five percent is lost and returned to Atlantia.
All steady flow access bands currently in circulation are made from mithril; it successfully transfers around eighty percent of the magic, while ten percent is absorbed and the remaining ten percen returns to Atlantia.”
"This is because you always use energy faster when bursting than going at a steady pace, just like when you're running?” John cut in, surprising Rebecca.
“Hey, not bad kiddo,” Rebecca said with a smile. “You're right. If we compare a sprinter with a long-distance runner, the sprinter will get ahead at the start but quickly run out of energy, whereas a long-distance runner who keeps the same pace will outlast the sprinter in energy.

Now, if we use the same magic gun for a third time but this time it’s made out of Mithrilium, the successful transfer rate would become around eighty percent of the mage, five percent is absorbed by the Mithrilium, and that leaves only fifteen percent returned to Atlantia.
Unfortunately, we can’t give a definite answer on the MK Zero’s usage because no Mithrilium access band has ever been used before, so that’s where you come in. Tia will analyse the numbers as you start to play Genesis.
However, we did test a different steady flow item made of Mithrilium, and it successfully transferred around ninety-three percent of the magic, while five percent was absorbed and two percent returned to Atlantia.
From this test, we can see that the ore always absorbs the same amount of magical energy regardless of whether it's a burst type or a steady type. This is what makes mithrilium so special; not only does it absorb less magical energy than other minerals, but the loss that returns to Atlantia is also much less, meaning…”
At this point, Rebecca stopped and looked at John expectantly, who smiled before saying, “Meaning that the successful transfer amount is always higher."
“Bingo, give the student a prize.”
“My head hurts,” Kaela remarked from where she was sitting in the picture.
Rebecca rolled her eyes at the remark before continuing, "This means that if the numbers for the MK Zero match other steady flow types made out of Mithrilium, your sync rate in Genesis will be thirteen percent better than everyone else.
Thirteen percent might not sound much, but it means your reaction and decision-making speed would be thirteen percent quicker than if you used a regular access band, making you by default faster than them.”
“Ok, I get all that, but how does it grow?” John asked.
“He followed all that?” Adria asked Sarah in a whisper, who just shook her head.
{Honestly, what was his homeroom teacher even doing?} Alexia thought in disbelief as she watched John discuss complex magical transfer equations with Rebecca.
“Well, Mithrilium to begin with is very fragile- think glass but bendy. So, one good smack and it will break; however, as it absorbs magic, its strength increases to a point we have not found yet.” Rebecca replied.
“A point you haven’t found yet?” Adria asked.
“Hey, it’s a newly discovered mineral, sue me,” Rebecca shrugged before continuing. “This is also why only someone who has not entered Genesis can use it because their magic power is still weak enough that it wont break it.”
“You do realise that I’m eighteen, right?” John asked. “Mana veins become fully formed at fifteen, meaning mine have been fully formed for three years.”
“That would be a problem if you had been using magic, but it sounds like you’ve only just learnt that you can, right?” Rebecca asked.
“Right,” John nodded.
“Then there's no problem,” Rebecca smiled. “To increase your magic power and potency, you have to regularly use it; however, since you’ve never used yours, it should be at the level of when your mana veins formed.
I, on the other hand, have been using magic for sixteen years, so my power is far stronger and more potent. If I were to try using the MK Zero, it would instantly break from an overabundance of magical energy.
Anyway, listen, John. While Tia has confirmed the MK Zero is safe to use and it will allow you to sync with Genesis, we won't know how good the actual sync rate is until you try it."
John nodded and looked at the band before asking, "What are the risks?"
"If it doesn't work, you will hear me, Thasinia, Sakoto and plenty of other people moaning about why it didn't work for who knows how long," Rebecca said with a smile.
John chuckled and nodded before saying, "Sure, let's do it.”
“That’s what I like to hear,” Rebecca said as she clapped her hands excitedly while looking at the others and saying. “You ladies found a good one.
“A good one?” John asked in confusion while the other women smiled and nodded at Rebecca's comment.
“Don’t worry about it,” Rebecca replied while carefully picking up the Mk VI and MK Zero and taking them towards another machine while saying. “The update of your access band will only take a few minutes.”
“I guess this is the perfect time for me to apologise again,” Alexia said as she stepped forward. “On behalf of the entire human race, I apologise for what you had to go through and promise that we will not only try to make it up to you but to also make sure it never happens to anyone else. Also, I would like to thank you for holding back on deciding the punishment Tia will give our race.”
As she reached this point, Alexia did something that surprised everyone; she actually bowed towards John while saying, “I deeply apologise.” As they heard her voice, all the other women snapped out of their surprise before following her actions and bowing towards John.
John was completely stunned; never in his wildest dreams did he ever think that he would be bowed to by a room full of women, including the Empress and Princess of his race.
