Chapter 100: Beyond the Light
The voice faded.
Yet its final words refused to disappear.
The Last Sovereign has awakened.
No one beneath the mountain heard it.
Not Lucien.
Not Caelum.
Not the Keepers.
The voice had not spoken to the world.
It had spoken beyond it.
---
Lucien looked down at the tiny golden seed resting in his palm.
It seemed impossibly ordinary.
No larger than a grain of wheat.
No aura surrounded it.
No overwhelming power flowed from it.
If dropped onto the road, anyone might mistake it for an ordinary seed.
The child smiled.
"It isn't meant to look important."
Lucien looked up.
"What does it become?"
The child knelt beside one of the ancient cracks running through the plaza.
Without a word, they pressed a finger into the soil.
"Plant it."
Lucien hesitated.
"Here?"
"Here."
He carefully placed the seed into the earth.
The moment it disappeared beneath the soil...
Nothing happened.
Orion blinked.
"...Is it broken?"
Tomorrow laughed.
"You expected lightning?"
"A little."
"Maybe a glowing tree."
"At least something."
The child shook their head.
"Life grows."
"It doesn't perform."
Those simple words quieted everyone.
Lucien found himself smiling.
He covered the seed with a handful of earth.
The Lantern of Welcome flickered once.
Then became still.
---
Minutes passed.
The forgotten city remained silent.
No miracle appeared.
No ancient tree burst from the ground.
Only a gentle breeze drifted through the empty streets.
Then...
An old woman stepped out of a nearby house.
Everyone froze.
She carried a small basket beneath one arm.
She looked around in confusion before noticing the group gathered in the plaza.
"Oh..."
She smiled politely.
"We have visitors."
Serin's broom slipped from his hands.
"No..."
His voice trembled.
"It can't be..."
The woman looked at him.
"Serin?"
She laughed softly.
"Have you been standing in the square all morning again?"
Tears welled in the old Keeper's eyes.
"You remember me?"
"Of course."
"You still forget your meals."
The basket opened.
Fresh bread.
Still warm.
The scent spread across the plaza.
One by one...
Doors opened.
A little boy ran across the street chasing a wooden hoop.
A blacksmith stepped from his workshop, stretching his shoulders.
Two merchants argued cheerfully over the price of apples.
A dog barked somewhere nearby.
A baby cried inside one of the houses.
Life.
Ordinary.
Simple.
Beautiful.
The forgotten city was no longer empty.
Lucien looked around in astonishment.
"Were they..."
The stranger nodded slowly.
"They were never dead."
"They were waiting."
The child quietly added,
"Someone had to remember how to come home."
---
Far below the city...
The Seventh Gate became completely still.
The great stone hand loosened its grip.
The ancient voice behind the darkness spoke again.
"They've chosen life."
There was no anger.
Only quiet acceptance.
The seven silver chains glowed brighter.
For the first time...
The pressure pressing against the Gate lessened.
Caelum looked toward the darkness.
"You're... stopping?"
"I was never trying to escape."
Everyone stared.
Lucien stepped closer.
"Then why break the Gate?"
A long silence followed.
When the answer finally came...
It was almost gentle.
"Because no one was coming back."
The words struck Lucien harder than any battle could have.
The being continued.
"I waited."
"I guarded."
"I remembered."
"But century after century..."
"...the city remained empty."
Another pause.
"So I believed the promise had been abandoned."
The Hollow Sovereign lowered his head.
"We abandoned you."
"Yes."
"But not through hatred."
"Through forgetting."
Lucien slowly understood.
The Seventh Gate had never been a prison built to keep evil inside.
It had become one because the world had forgotten the one guarding it.
---
The child walked toward the Gate.
Every Judge and Keeper instinctively moved aside.
The dawn-colored lantern glowed softly.
"You kept your promise."
The unseen guardian answered.
"So did you."
The child smiled.
"We're both late."
A deep laugh echoed beyond the Gate.
This time...
It was warm.
"I suppose we are."
---
Suddenly, Lyra gasped.
The silver Roads beneath her feet began changing again.
Not breaking.
Not multiplying.
Joining.
Thousands of tiny roads connected to one another until the entire world resembled a living web of light.
"I can see everyone..."
She whispered.
"Every village."
"Every House."
"Every lantern."
Then her expression changed.
"There are gaps."
Lucien looked at her.
"What kind of gaps?"
She slowly raised her trembling hand.
"There are places..."
"...where no Road reaches."
The stranger's smile disappeared.
"That should be impossible."
"It isn't."
Lyra pointed beyond the map.
"Something is..."
"...eating them."
Silence swept across the plaza.
The child looked toward the distant horizon beyond the Roads.
For the first time...
The dawn-colored light dimmed.
"It found us."
Lucien's heart tightened.
"Who?"
The child answered with a whisper.
"Not someone."
"Somewhere."
The companions exchanged confused glances.
The child continued.
"Before there were Roads..."
"...there was a place no light ever reached."
The gentle morning breeze stopped.
Across the forgotten city, every lantern flickered once.
Then steadied again.
The child looked directly into Lucien's eyes.
"I brought you home."
"So that together..."
"...we can leave it."
Lucien frowned.
"Leave home?"
The child nodded.
"Because for the first time in history..."
"...the Road no longer ends at the edge of the world."
Far beyond the silver chains...
Beyond every village and every kingdom...
The darkness that had watched in silence slowly receded.
Not in fear.
In anticipation.
As it withdrew, something impossible became visible.
A narrow road.
Ancient.
Broken.
Leading away from the world itself.
And above that impossible road hung a weathered wooden sign, its faded letters barely readable after countless ages.
TO THOSE WHO CARRY THE LIGHT...
WELCOME TO THE FIRST WORLD.
