Chapter 101: The Road Beyond the World

No one crossed the road.

Not immediately.

That surprised Orion.

He had grown accustomed to ancient doors opening and Lucien walking through them before anyone had finished explaining why doing so was dangerous.

Instead, Lucien stood at the edge of the living map and stared.

Beyond the network of silver Roads, beyond every kingdom and every remembered village, one narrow path stretched into nothing.

It looked unimpressive.

Old stones.

Broken edges.

Grass growing between cracks.

The kind of road a farmer might use to reach a neighboring village.

Except there was no neighboring village.

There was no land.

There was no sky.

There was nothing at all.

The road simply continued beyond the world.

Orion folded his arms.

"I dislike it."

Astrael glanced at him.

"You dislike most things."

"Incorrect. I dislike suspicious things."

"You considered soup suspicious yesterday."

"The mushrooms were unusually confident."

Tomorrow laughed.

The sound felt strangely necessary.

Around them, the forgotten city continued waking.

Windows opened.

Bread baked.

Children ran through streets that had remained silent for thousands of years.

Life returned without ceremony.

Perhaps that was why the impossible road felt even stranger.

It did not belong beside ordinary things.

Lucien looked toward the child.

"The First World."

The child nodded.

"Was our world not the first?"

"No."

"What happened to it?"

The child's expression became quieter.

"It survived."

Lucien frowned.

"That sounds like good news."

"It wasn't."

The stranger slowly approached.

For the first time since Lucien had met him, he looked genuinely reluctant to speak.

"The First World was where the Roads began."

"And the lanterns?"

"Those came later."

"Why?"

"Because the First World had no need for them."

Orion looked confused.

"Everywhere needs lanterns."

The stranger smiled faintly.

"That is what we eventually learned."

He knelt beside the living map.

His finger touched the broken road.

"Imagine a world where no one could become lost."

"No forgotten names."

"No broken Roads."

"No distance great enough to separate people."

Caelum understood first.

"A perfect world."

"No."

The Hollow Sovereign's voice carried unusual bitterness.

"A world that believed itself perfect."

The stranger nodded.

"And because it believed itself perfect..."

"...it never learned how to welcome anyone home."

Lucien looked again toward the road.

"What destroyed it?"

The child answered.

"Nothing."

Silence.

"Then why was it abandoned?"

"It wasn't."

The dawn-colored lantern dimmed.

"It abandoned everyone else."

Those words lingered.

The distant road seemed colder now.

Not threatening.

Lonely.

---

Lyra knelt beside the map.

She placed both palms against the glowing Roads.

Her eyes closed.

Silver light traveled up her arms.

Immediately she saw beyond the world.

Not clearly.

Fragments.

An enormous city beneath a colorless sky.

Towers stretching farther than mountains.

Roads suspended between them.

Millions of windows.

Not one light.

She saw statues.

Thousands.

Each depicted the same faceless figure.

Then...

Something turned toward her.

Lyra ripped her hands away.

She fell backward.

Lucien caught her.

"What happened?"

She struggled to breathe.

"Something saw me."

The child became completely still.

"What?"

"I don't know."

Lyra shook her head.

"It didn't have a face."

The stranger looked toward the Hollow Sovereign.

The Hollow Sovereign looked back.

Neither spoke.

Lucien noticed.

"You know what she saw."

"No," the stranger replied.

"But I know what she shouldn't have seen."

"Which is?"

"Anything."

The plaza fell silent.

"The First World was sealed."

"By whom?"

The stranger looked at Lucien.

"By the First Sovereign."

The title landed differently now.

Lucien felt the Lantern of Welcome warm against his hand.

"Not me."

"No."

"Then who?"

The stranger smiled sadly.

"That is the question that destroyed the Second Age."

---

Caelum walked toward the road.

He stopped before its first broken stone.

"You crossed it."

Everyone looked at him.

The Hollow Sovereign's expression became unreadable.

Caelum continued.

"That's why your lantern went dark."

The Hollow Sovereign said nothing.

"You found the First World."

"I found its gate."

"And?"

"I knocked."

Orion sighed.

"Of course you did."

The Hollow Sovereign almost smiled.

"No one answered."

"What did you do?"

"I waited."

"For how long?"

"One hundred and seventeen years."

Orion's mouth opened.

Then closed.

For once, no joke came.

The Hollow Sovereign looked toward his newly rekindled lantern.

"Eventually I realized something."

"The gate wasn't closed."

"It was afraid."

Lucien frowned.

"Of you?"

"Of what followed me."

The warmth disappeared from the plaza.

Astrael's hand settled on his weapon.

"What followed you?"

The Hollow Sovereign looked toward the distant road.

"I never found out."

"Because when I turned around..."

"...it was gone."

The child whispered,

"It wasn't gone."

The Hollow Sovereign slowly looked at them.

The dawn lantern trembled.

"It followed the Road back."

No one moved.

Lucien remembered the gaps Lyra had seen.

Places where Roads simply disappeared.

"That's what's eating them."

The child nodded.

"Slowly."

"Why slowly?"

"Because it cannot enter where people remember one another."

Lucien understood.

"The lanterns."

"Yes."

The House With the Lantern.

The forgotten villages.

The returning names.

Every act of remembrance had not merely healed the Roads.

It had been protecting them.

---

Lucien looked around at his companions.

"You can stay."

Orion groaned.

"No."

"I haven't finished."

"You say that every time something terrible is about to happen."

Astrael nodded.

"He does."

Lucien ignored them.

"The road leaves our world."

"We don't know where it goes."

"We don't know what waits there."

"This is different."

Tomorrow stepped forward.

"No."

Lucien looked at her.

"It isn't."

She smiled.

"A road is a road."

"You walk it with someone."

"Then you come home."

Cael lifted his wooden lantern.

"We already decided."

Lyra slowly stood.

"The Road knows me now."

"I don't think staying behind would make me safer."

Astrael rested his sword across his shoulder.

"I have nowhere more useful to be."

Finally everyone looked at Orion.

He seemed offended.

"What?"

"We assumed you had something to say," Caelum replied.

"I do."

Orion adjusted his pack.

"We should bring food."

Astrael stared.

"We are approaching the edge of creation."

"Exactly."

"There may not be inns."

The child laughed.

Lucien did too.

Quietly.

It felt good.

---

They did not leave that day.

That mattered.

Instead, they ate with the citizens of the awakened city.

They listened to stories.

Orion discovered a bakery and disappeared for nearly an hour.

Astrael returned the wooden fox he had carved to a little girl who had apparently owned one exactly like it thousands of years ago.

Neither understood how.

Tomorrow helped an old woman relight the lantern outside her home.

Lyra sat beside the city fountain and drew maps.

Not ancient maps.

New ones.

Caelum and Lucien sat together on the steps overlooking the city.

For once, they spoke about nothing important.

Childhood.

Food.

Arguments neither remembered winning.

A broken window Caelum still insisted had been Lucien's fault.

"It was Orion," Lucien said.

Caelum stared at him.

"You hadn't met Orion."

"Then he was remarkably committed."

From across the plaza Orion shouted,

"I accept no responsibility for historical windows!"

Caelum laughed.

A real laugh.

Lucien had forgotten the sound.

Perhaps that was why the evening mattered more than every revelation beneath the mountain.

Before walking beyond the world...

They remembered why they wanted to return.

---

At dawn, they gathered at the edge of the Eighth Road.

Serin remained behind.

So did the stranger.

The child stood beside Lucien.

"You are coming?"

The child nodded.

"I've been waiting longer than all of you."

The Hollow Sovereign stepped onto the first stone.

His amber lantern flickered.

The Road accepted him.

Caelum followed.

Then Astrael.

Tomorrow.

Cael.

Orion.

Lyra.

Finally Lucien.

The moment his foot touched the Road...

The world disappeared behind them.

No mountain.

No city.

No sky.

Only the narrow path suspended within endless darkness.

Their lanterns became the only stars.

Ahead stood the weathered sign.

Lucien passed beneath it.

The faded words changed.

The old welcome vanished.

New letters carved themselves slowly into the wood.

Orion read them aloud.

His humor disappeared.

"That seems bad."

Lucien looked up.

The sign now contained only one sentence.

TURN BACK, LUCIEN.

No one breathed.

Then another line carved itself beneath the first.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

I REMEMBER WHAT YOU DID HERE.

Lucien stared at the message.

He had never entered the First World.

He was certain of that.

Then, somewhere beyond the darkness ahead...

A lantern ignited.

Black.

A second followed.

Then a third.

One by one, thousands of black lanterns appeared along the Road.

And from somewhere impossibly far ahead, a voice spoke Lucien's name with the exhausted hatred of someone who had been waiting for him since before he was born.

"Come back..."

A pause.

"...and finish what you started."
