the last sovereign of infinity

Chapter 99: The First Dawn

The eighth star remained alone in the morning sky.

It did not outshine the others.

It did not demand attention.

It simply existed.

Yet across the world, people who had never seen the forgotten city found themselves looking upward.

A shepherd guiding his flock through mist-covered hills paused in the middle of an old song.

A fisherman on a silent lake lowered his net without understanding why.

A child woke before sunrise, insisting there was "another morning" above the sky.

None of them knew the name Lucien.

But all of them felt the same quiet certainty.

Something long forgotten had finally remembered them.

---

Far beneath the mountain, the transparent Eighth Road became solid beneath Lucien's feet.

Fresh grass swayed in a breeze that should not have existed underground.

Tiny white flowers bloomed wherever the dawn-colored light touched the earth.

Lucien took another step.

The distance between himself and the child became shorter.

Not because either of them hurried.

Because the Road refused to keep friends apart.

The child laughed softly.

"Now you understand."

Lucien smiled.

"I understand a little."

"That is enough."

The Lantern of Welcome glowed warmly in his hand.

Judge Aria's lantern answered.

The rekindled lantern of the Hollow Sovereign shone with its quiet amber light.

Three flames.

None competing.

Each making the others brighter.

The stranger watched with unmistakable relief.

"It has begun."

Caelum looked toward him.

"What has?"

"The First Dawn."

---

The ancient voice beyond the Seventh Gate remained silent.

The colossal stone hand no longer struggled against the silver chains.

Instead...

It slowly relaxed.

Almost thoughtfully.

Finally, the voice spoke.

"I remember."

The words echoed through the mountain.

Not with power.

With regret.

"I remember when the Roads were young."

The companions waited.

"I remember when no gate separated us."

Another pause.

"I remember when Welcome was stronger than Judgment."

Lucien looked toward the darkness beyond the Gate.

"Then why did everything change?"

For a long time...

There was no answer.

When it finally came, it sounded unbearably tired.

"Because we believed fear could protect what love had built."

No one spoke.

The sentence settled heavily over every heart present.

The Hollow Sovereign quietly closed his eyes.

"I made that mistake."

Caelum nodded.

"So did I."

Serin lowered his head.

"So did we all."

---

At the House With the Lantern, Alden gently turned another page of the journal.

New words appeared one line at a time.

The First Dawn is not the end of night.

He frowned.

More words formed.

It is the promise that night cannot last forever.

The child standing beside him read the sentence aloud.

"Is that about Lucien?"

Alden smiled.

"No."

"It is about everyone."

He carefully closed the journal.

Outside, the golden lantern above the porch burned brighter than it ever had before.

Its light reached beyond the valley.

Travelers many miles away noticed it.

Without knowing why...

They began walking toward it.

---

Back in the forgotten city, Lyra suddenly gasped.

Silver Roads spread beneath her feet.

This time, they no longer appeared broken.

Instead, countless tiny branches began growing from them.

Small paths.

Village roads.

Forest trails.

Ordinary routes that had never appeared before.

"They're multiplying..."

She whispered in disbelief.

The stranger's eyes widened.

"No."

"They're being remembered."

Lucien looked at the living map.

"The Roads are growing."

"They always grew."

The stranger smiled.

"We simply stopped noticing."

Orion scratched his head.

"So..."

"The great secret of the ancient Roads is..."

"...people making more roads?"

Tomorrow laughed.

A clear, genuine laugh that echoed through the plaza.

"Sometimes you accidentally sound wise."

"I'll take that as a compliment."

"You should."

Even Astrael allowed the corner of his mouth to lift.

---

The child finally stood only a few steps away.

Close enough for Lucien to see clearly.

The child could have been no older than eight.

Simple clothes.

Bare feet.

Bright eyes reflecting the colors of dawn.

Nothing about them seemed extraordinary.

Yet looking into those eyes felt like watching the first sunrise after a lifetime of darkness.

Lucien knelt.

"I still don't know your name."

The child tilted their head.

"Do you need it?"

Lucien thought carefully before answering.

Then he smiled.

"No."

"I only need to know you're here."

The child's smile became radiant.

"Good."

"Then you've learned the first lesson."

"What lesson?"

"People are remembered long before their names are."

The words struck Lucien with surprising force.

He thought of Alden.

Of Orion.

Of the old woman who had first offered him food.

Of Judge Aria.

Of everyone whose kindness had changed him before he had learned who they truly were.

He bowed his head.

"I understand."

The child reached out.

Small fingers rested gently against Lucien's forehead.

A warm light spread through him.

Not overwhelming.

Comforting.

He saw no visions.

He heard no forgotten voices.

He simply felt... home.

When the light faded, something new rested in his palm.

A tiny seed.

Golden.

No larger than a grain of wheat.

Lucien looked at it in confusion.

"What is this?"

The child answered with complete seriousness.

"The First Seed."

"What does it grow into?"

The child looked toward the world beyond the mountain.

"Not a tree."

"Not a flower."

The child's eyes shone with quiet hope.

"A beginning."

Before Lucien could ask another question, the Eighth Star above the broken mountain flared.

Across the horizon, hundreds...

Then thousands...

Then tens of thousands of tiny lights answered.

Not stars.

Lanterns.

From lonely cottages.

Mountain shrines.

Fishing villages.

Desert caravans.

Hidden monasteries.

Places forgotten by kings but not by ordinary people.

One by one, their lanterns lit themselves.

The stranger looked up in awe.

"They're answering the call."

Serin whispered through tears,

"The world is waking."

But far beyond the reach of every lantern...

Beyond every Road...

Beyond even the silver chains binding the Seventh Gate...

A pair of ancient eyes slowly opened in the endless darkness.

Unlike the being called Origin...

Unlike the presence behind the Seventh Gate...

These eyes held no curiosity.

No regret.

No patience.

Only hunger.

A voice, older than the First Dawn itself, echoed through the void.

"So..."

"At last..."

"...the Last Sovereign has awakened."

And for the first time since the beginning of the story...

Something beyond the world turned its gaze toward Lucien.
