Chapter 89: The Dreaming Citizens
The heartbeat beneath the mountain did not belong to one person.
It belonged to thousands.
Slow.
Steady.
Perfectly synchronized.
Each pulse echoed through the stone beneath their feet until the entire plaza seemed to breathe.
No one moved.
Even Orion had forgotten how to make a joke.
Lucien looked toward the sealed stairway beneath the Heart Lantern.
The silver ribbon around his wrist continued to pull gently downward.
Not with urgency.
With recognition.
As though someone below had been waiting for him for a very long time.
Another heartbeat rose from the depths.
Then another.
Serin closed his eyes.
"It has begun."
Caelum turned sharply.
"Can the seals still hold?"
"They already are not."
The old keeper rested one weathered hand against the dark Heart Lantern.
Silver cracks spread slowly across its surface, each one no wider than a strand of hair.
"They were never meant to survive the return of a Lantern Bearer."
The Hollow Sovereign watched the lantern in silence.
"When was the last time they stirred?"
Serin answered without opening his eyes.
"The day you left."
A shadow crossed the Hollow Sovereign's face.
"So they waited."
"They believed you would return."
"I never deserved that faith."
"No," Serin replied quietly.
"But they gave it anyway."
The words lingered in the air.
Lucien walked toward the lantern.
This time Serin did not stop him.
Instead, the old keeper stepped aside.
"You may touch it now."
Lucien rested his palm against the cool stone.
Immediately—
The city vanished.
He stood within the same plaza.
Only it was alive.
Children chased one another between glowing lanterns.
Merchants laughed as they prepared evening meals.
Musicians filled the streets with quiet melodies.
Lantern Keepers climbed ladders, carefully trimming golden flames that never seemed to consume oil.
The city felt... peaceful.
Not powerful.
Not grand.
Simply alive.
Then someone spoke behind him.
"You always arrive before sunset."
Lucien turned.
A young woman stood beside the Heart Lantern.
She wore simple white robes marked with seven embroidered lanterns.
She smiled as though greeting an old friend.
"I've been waiting."
Lucien searched her face.
"I know you."
"You should."
She laughed softly.
"You gave me my first lantern."
The vision trembled.
"I don't remember."
"I know."
Her smile never faded.
"But you will."
She reached into the sleeve of her robe and withdrew a tiny bronze lantern.
It fit easily within her hands.
Its flame burned silver.
She offered it to him.
"The city has kept this safe."
Lucien reached toward it.
The moment his fingers brushed the handle—
The vision shattered.
He found himself standing in the empty plaza once more.
His hand was still resting against the Heart Lantern.
Except...
He was now holding something.
A small bronze lantern.
Exactly like the one from the vision.
Orion stared.
"...Was that there before?"
"No," Tomorrow whispered.
"It wasn't."
Serin bowed deeply.
"The Lantern of Welcome."
Caelum looked genuinely astonished.
"I thought it had been lost."
"It was."
Serin smiled.
"Until it was remembered."
Lyra stepped closer.
"The city gave it to him."
"No."
Serin corrected gently.
"The city returned it."
Lucien examined the tiny lantern.
Unlike the First Lantern, this one carried a warm golden flame.
It felt familiar.
Comforting.
Like the light from the House With the Lantern.
"The First Lantern remembers every name," Serin said.
"The Lantern of Welcome remembers every home."
The words struck Lucien harder than he expected.
Home.
The House.
Alden.
The child.
The valley.
He suddenly understood why the golden flame there had always felt different from every other light.
It had never been ordinary.
Far beneath the mountain, the synchronized heartbeats grew louder.
Then...
Voices.
Not whispers.
Songs.
Thousands of people singing together.
The melody drifted upward through solid stone.
Lyra's eyes widened.
"It's the same song."
"The one the old woman was singing."
Caelum listened carefully.
"No."
"It's older."
"The villages only remembered part of it."
Serin slowly joined the song.
His voice was quiet, almost too soft to hear.
One by one, the golden lanterns throughout the plaza brightened.
Tomorrow closed her eyes.
"I know these words."
"So do I," Cael whispered.
Neither of them understood how.
The final verse echoed from beneath the mountain.
The Heart Lantern answered with a single pulse of silver light.
A deep grinding sound rolled through the city.
Everyone turned toward the broad staircase descending beneath the plaza.
Stone shifted.
Ancient locks released.
Dust rose into the air.
The sealed stairway was opening.
Serin's smile disappeared.
"The Sanctuary has chosen."
"Chosen what?" Astrael asked.
The old keeper looked at Lucien.
"Not what."
"Who."
The darkness below the staircase slowly retreated as rows of lanterns lit themselves one after another, stretching deep beneath the mountain.
A path.
Waiting.
Lucien took one step toward it.
The tiny Lantern of Welcome in his hand flared brightly.
From somewhere deep below came the sound of approaching footsteps.
Not thousands.
Only one.
Measured.
Unhurried.
Confident.
Someone was climbing toward them.
Serin lowered himself to one knee.
Caelum followed.
To everyone's surprise...
The Hollow Sovereign did the same.
Orion looked around in disbelief.
"Should one of us explain why everyone important suddenly decided to kneel?"
No one answered.
The footsteps stopped just beyond the last pool of light.
A silhouette stood at the top of the unseen stairs.
Then a calm voice echoed through the silent city.
"So..."
"It really is you."
The figure stepped into the lantern light.
Lucien's breath caught.
The stranger wore his face.
Not the face of the Hollow Sovereign.
Not his own.
But the face of the man from the vision beside the mountain-sized lantern.
The one who had welcomed him back as Sovereign.
And around the stranger's neck hung a simple wooden pendant.
Carved into the shape of a lantern.
Exactly like the one Alden had once found buried beneath the House With the Lantern.
