the last sovereign of infinity

Chapter 88: The Creator's Shadow

No one spoke.

The old keeper continued staring at Lucien as though the silver light had overturned a certainty he had carried for centuries.

"...Impossible," he repeated.

The silver flames settled back into warm gold.

The avenue returned to silence.

Only then did the old keeper lower his gaze.

"No..."

He shook his head slowly.

"The city does not make mistakes."

Caelum stepped forward.

"What did it see?"

The old keeper looked toward Lucien again.

"It welcomed him..."

His voice had become almost reverent.

"...as the one who built this place."

Lucien frowned.

"I've never seen this city."

"I know."

"You believe me?"

"I believe the city."

"They are not the same thing."

"No."

The keeper smiled faintly.

"That is precisely why I am troubled."

Orion looked from one man to the other.

"I would like to object."

No one answered.

"I feel like everyone except us knows what is happening."

Tomorrow smiled.

"I don't think they do."

She glanced toward the keeper.

"I think they're just better at hiding it."

The old man laughed quietly.

"A fair observation."

He rested both hands upon the handle of his broom.

"My name is Serin."

"I have kept the First Avenue for..." He paused, genuinely considering the question.

"...long enough that counting stopped being useful."

Caelum narrowed his eyes.

"You were one of the Keepers."

"I remain one."

"I thought all of you were gone."

"So did we."

Serin turned and began walking deeper into the city.

"If you seek answers, you should not remain standing at the gate."

Without waiting for agreement, he continued down the lantern-lined avenue.

The group exchanged uncertain glances before following.

The streets were impossibly clean.

Not a single fallen leaf rested upon the stone.

No dust gathered beneath windows.

No moss claimed the walls.

Yet there were unmistakable signs that people had once lived here.

A wooden toy lay beside a doorway.

A basket of weaving rested upon a porch.

A half-finished carving remained on a workbench.

Everything had been left exactly where its owner had placed it.

As though an entire city had paused in the middle of an ordinary afternoon.

Lyra stopped beside a small fountain.

Its water still flowed.

Crystal clear.

She touched the surface.

The water rippled...

Then reflected not her face—

But the city.

Alive.

Children raced across the square laughing.

Merchants argued cheerfully over prices.

Lantern Keepers climbed ladders to trim golden flames.

Music drifted from an open window.

The vision lasted only seconds.

Then the fountain reflected only the empty street once more.

Lyra stepped back.

"They're still here."

Serin did not turn around.

"In a manner of speaking."

"What does that mean?"

"It means cities remember."

Orion frowned.

"That's becoming an increasingly unsettling sentence."

They reached a broad circular plaza.

At its center stood a single enormous lantern nearly twice the height of a man.

Unlike every other lantern they had passed...

It was dark.

Lucien felt the whispers in his mind fall completely silent.

Every forgotten name...

Every hidden road...

Every distant voice...

Gone.

Only stillness remained.

Serin bowed respectfully toward the unlit lantern.

"This is the Heart Lantern."

"No flame has touched it since the Day of Departure."

Caelum stared at it.

"I've heard stories."

"They were incomplete."

"They usually are."

Lucien stepped closer.

The stone beneath his feet felt warm.

Almost welcoming.

He reached out instinctively.

Before his fingers touched the lantern's frame—

"Don't."

Serin's voice echoed sharply across the plaza.

Lucien stopped.

The old keeper exhaled slowly.

"If it awakens before you understand why it was extinguished..."

His expression grew solemn.

"...history may repeat itself."

Silence settled over the square.

The Hollow Sovereign had not spoken since entering the city.

Now he finally looked at the dark lantern.

His normally unreadable face softened.

"So you truly survived."

Serin glanced at him.

"Barely."

"I mourned this city."

"I know."

"You heard?"

"We hear many things."

The Hollow Sovereign lowered his head.

"For what little it is worth..."

"...I was too late."

Serin studied him for several moments.

"I know."

No accusation.

No forgiveness.

Only truth.

Lucien watched the exchange.

"You've met before."

Caelum answered.

"Long ago."

Serin nodded.

"Before roads were broken."

Before anyone could ask another question, a deep bell rang somewhere beneath the mountain.

Not above them.

Below.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

The Heart Lantern trembled.

Hairline cracks of silver light spread across its dark surface.

Lyra suddenly grabbed Lucien's arm.

Her eyes had lost focus.

"I can see it."

"What?"

"The lower city."

"There are people."

"No..."

Her breathing quickened.

"They're asleep."

"Thousands of them."

Caelum's expression changed instantly.

"The Sanctuary."

Serin closed his eyes.

"So the seals have weakened."

"What seals?" Astrael asked.

The old keeper opened his eyes.

"The ones keeping the Dreaming Citizens asleep."

Orion blinked.

"I'm sorry..."

"...the what?"

Serin looked toward the mountain rising above the plaza.

"When the city chose to wait..."

"...not everyone agreed to leave."

Another bell rang.

This time the sound carried voices with it.

Soft.

Distant.

As though thousands of people were whispering beneath layers of stone.

Lucien felt the silver ribbon around his wrist tighten.

Not pulling east.

Pulling downward.

Into the mountain.

The Hollow Sovereign looked toward the sealed stairway beneath the Heart Lantern.

"They've begun waking."

Caelum's face became grave.

"They must not."

Lucien turned to him.

"Why?"

Neither Caelum nor Serin answered.

Instead...

Both looked toward the dark lantern.

A faint heartbeat echoed from somewhere deep beneath the city.

Then another.

Then hundreds.

The sound grew steadily louder.

Serin whispered a sentence that chilled everyone present.

"The city has remembered..."

He looked directly at Lucien.

"...that its Sovereign has returned."

Far below them...

In the buried city beneath the mountain...

Thousands of eyes opened at exactly the same moment.
