Chapter 90: The Keeper of the First Welcome

The city fell silent.

Not the silence of abandonment.

The silence of recognition.

Every lantern along the descending stairway burned steadily, their flames neither gold nor silver but something between the two, as though they had spent centuries waiting for two memories to become one.

The stranger stepped fully into the light.

He looked no older than thirty.

His hair was dark, tied loosely behind his neck.

His clothes were simple traveler's robes, faded by years rather than battle.

Only his eyes betrayed him.

They held the calm patience of someone who had watched empires rise and vanish without once needing to leave his seat.

Around his neck rested the small wooden lantern pendant.

Lucien could not look away from it.

He knew it.

Not from memory.

From instinct.

It belonged.

The stranger smiled.

"It has been a very long journey."

Lucien took a cautious step forward.

"Who are you?"

The man considered the question for a moment.

"I have answered that question many times."

He glanced toward Serin.

"Usually incorrectly."

Serin lowered his head.

"My Lord."

The stranger sighed.

"I've asked you not to call me that for nearly four thousand years."

"You have."

"And yet?"

"I continue to ignore you."

A faint smile appeared on the stranger's face.

"Some traditions survive every age."

Orion leaned toward Astrael.

"I like him."

"You've known him for six seconds."

"I have excellent instincts."

"You do not."

"They're improving."

For the first time since entering the city, genuine warmth touched the air.

The stranger looked toward Orion.

"You remind me of someone."

Orion straightened proudly.

"A great hero?"

"No."

"A baker."

"...I can live with that."

Even the Hollow Sovereign allowed himself the smallest smile.

Lucien noticed it.

That alone told him the man before them was no ordinary Keeper.

"You still haven't answered," Lucien said.

The stranger's gaze returned to him.

"No."

"I haven't."

He reached up and removed the wooden pendant from around his neck.

Holding it gently in his palm, he walked toward Lucien.

Neither Caelum nor the Hollow Sovereign moved to stop him.

They simply watched.

The stranger extended the pendant.

"Take it."

Lucien hesitated.

"What is it?"

"The first lantern ever carved by human hands."

Silence swept through the plaza.

Caelum's eyes widened.

"Impossible."

The stranger chuckled.

"Many things are."

Lucien accepted the pendant.

The wood was warm.

Not with magic.

With familiarity.

His fingertips brushed an old carving near its base.

Three tiny lines.

Crooked.

Uneven.

The work of inexperienced hands.

A memory flickered.

Two children.

One carving.

One laughing because the lantern looked more like a potato than a lamp.

The memory vanished before faces could form.

Lucien looked up sharply.

"That wasn't my memory."

"No."

"It wasn't."

"Whose was it?"

The stranger's smile softened.

"The boy who carved it."

Lucien stared at the pendant.

"You knew him."

"I was him."

The words settled heavily over everyone.

Tomorrow frowned.

"That would make you..."

"The First Lantern Keeper?"

The stranger shook his head.

"No."

"I became a Keeper much later."

"Then who were you?"

He looked around the city.

At the empty homes.

The glowing lanterns.

The quiet streets.

When he finally answered, his voice carried neither pride nor sorrow.

Only truth.

"I was the first person ever welcomed home."

No one spoke.

The sentence felt far larger than it sounded.

Serin quietly continued.

"Before kingdoms..."

"Before roads..."

"People wandered alone."

The stranger nodded.

"There were villages."

"There were families."

"There were fires."

"But there was no place that belonged to everyone."

He looked toward Lucien.

"So someone built one."

Lucien frowned.

"The House..."

"Yes."

"The first House With the Lantern."

The words struck him like distant thunder.

Caelum slowly looked toward Serin.

"I thought the House in the valley was the first."

"It is not."

"It is..."

Serin smiled.

"...the last."

A cold wind drifted through the plaza.

Not from outside.

From somewhere deep beneath the city.

The lanterns flickered together.

The stranger's expression changed.

"They've awakened."

"The Dreaming Citizens?"

Serin asked.

"No."

"The Watchers."

Even the Hollow Sovereign became still.

"I hoped they would sleep longer."

"So did I."

Lucien looked between them.

"Who are the Watchers?"

Neither answered immediately.

Instead, the stranger began walking toward the center of the plaza.

There, engraved into the stone, lay a vast circular map.

Not of kingdoms.

Of roads.

Seven great roads radiated outward from the city like spokes of a wheel.

Three glowed softly.

Four remained dark.

The stranger knelt.

His fingers traced the first glowing road.

"The Road of Return."

Then the second.

"The Road of Welcome."

Then the third.

"The Road of Memory."

His hand hovered over the fourth.

Dark.

Silent.

Broken.

"It has begun waking."

Lucien followed his gaze.

"What is it called?"

The stranger looked at him for a long moment.

Then quietly answered,

"The Road of Judgment."

The words echoed strangely through the empty city.

Almost immediately, one of the dark lines pulsed.

Once.

Then again.

A tiny crack spread across the stone map.

Serin inhaled sharply.

"It shouldn't respond."

"It isn't responding to me," the stranger whispered.

He slowly looked at Lucien.

"It's responding to him."

At that exact moment, the silver ribbon around Lucien's wrist tightened.

Not painfully.

Urgently.

The whispers returned.

Not thousands this time.

Only one.

A frightened voice.

Help us...

Lucien froze.

He looked toward the mountain towering above the city.

The voice came again.

Please...

...before they wake.

The plea carried no power.

No command.

Only fear.

Lucien immediately recognized it.

It belonged to a child.

Far beneath the city.

Deep within the Sanctuary.

He looked toward the descending stairway.

"We're not alone."

The stranger nodded grimly.

"No."

"We never were."

A deep horn echoed beneath the mountain.

Not the bright call of a warning.

A solemn note.

Ancient.

Final.

One by one, every lantern in the plaza dimmed.

Only Lucien's tiny Lantern of Welcome remained lit.

The stranger looked at its flame.

Then at Lucien.

"The city has made its choice."

"What choice?"

Instead of answering, the stranger stepped aside.

The great doors leading deeper into the Sanctuary slowly opened.

Warm golden light spilled from the darkness below.

But mixed within it...

For the first time...

Was a thin ribbon of black flame.

Serin's face lost all color.

"The Judgment Fire..."

"It has escaped."

The horn sounded again.

This time, it was answered.

Not by another horn.

By the voices of thousands of sleeping citizens awakening together beneath the mountain.

And among them...

One voice screamed Lucien's true name.
