Chapter 126: The New Tomorrow.
"Order the injured soldiers to go ahead of us." Andrea turned towards Yuri. "Go find Old Man Bo for me."
The plan had been designed to be simple and effective, but too many unexpected variables had forced them to deviate from it. Now Andrea simply wanted to get rid of the Chief once and for all. Once he died, the other low-level Eidolons would lose their intelligence and revert back to the mindless beasts they had originally been.
Elias helped her make her way to the top of the barricade, where she looked out at the remaining Eidolons walking towards them. The sight was soul-chilling. There were less than half as many as there had been before, but considering the damage the humans had suffered, that number was still more than enough to turn the battle against them if the Eidolons attacked while they were still exposed.
Andrea spotted the Chief in the distance.
He was limping, his enormous body visibly damaged from his battle with Malik, but his wounds were already beginning to heal. His movements were slow for now, yet Andrea knew that by the time he reached the camp, he would most likely be capable of fighting again.
Elias’ eyes remained cold as he watched the approaching Eidolons.
"I should fight the Chief. You follow the injured and evacuate."
Andrea shook her head.
"That won’t work. You’re strong, but the Chief won’t fight you alone. He still has the unkillable Divine Priest fighting for him."
"If you fight in your condition, you will most certainly die."
She looked up at him.
"Everyone certainly dies, Elias."
"You’re not everyone. You’re you."
Before Andrea could respond, the Eidolons in the distance suddenly roared. Their pace increased as they began galloping towards the camp, their heavy bodies kicking up snow as they closed the distance.
Yuri suddenly appeared before Andrea, having returned from her search, and almost immediately, a massive figure jumped from the ground and landed on top of the barricade. The wooden wall shook intensely beneath the impact, but somehow managed to hold.
Old Man Bo was still in his beast form.
Hannah was no longer on his back. After returning to the camp, she had gone to seek proper medical attention for herself, leaving the massive beast to come alone.
"Little girl, you wanted to see me?"
His beast form was loud and imposing. Andrea had grown accustomed to seeing him like this, but that didn’t stop his enormous presence from shaking her heart whenever he appeared before her.
"My sword is broken," she said lightly. "I need a weapon to face the Chief."
"Say no more."
Old Man Bo immediately dropped his massive hammers onto the barricade. The heavy weapons landed with a deep thud, but Andrea simply shook her head.
"I can’t use those. I need a long sword."
Old Man Bo’s beast form looked visibly confused by her request. Andrea understood why. His massive hammers were more than capable of dealing with most opponents, but they were useless to her. She needed something she could actually fight with, and judging from the condition of her previous weapon, finding something that could survive her strength wasn’t going to be easy.
She wasn’t expecting Old Man Bo to have exactly what she needed either, but it was worth asking.
"Will you let me speak to Old Man Bo?" Andrea asked calmly.
The beast form remained still for a moment, seemingly unwilling to change back. Andrea simply waited, knowing there wasn’t much point in arguing with him. Eventually, however, he gave in. His massive body began shrinking, the transformation causing his enormous frame to gradually return to its familiar human form.
A few moments later, Old Man Bo stood before her again.
"You don’t look so good, kid," he said. "I have a spare weapon I kept just for you. It won’t be as efficient, and it might break after a few swings, but it’s certainly to your taste."
Andrea smiled and nodded in gratitude. "That will do."
Old Man Bo turned around and disappeared inside the camp, leaving Andrea waiting with Yuri and Elias. It wasn’t long before he returned, carrying a long silver sword in his hands. Its polished surface covered in light-coloured runes that pulsed faintly along the length of the blade.
It was clearly a top-level weapon, far better than anything an ordinary Awakened would casually possess. Yet even something of this quality was unlikely to last long in her hands. Her previous sword had already been destroyed after being forced to withstand the siege weapon’s laser beam, and the strength behind Andrea’s attacks was simply too much for most weapons to endure.
Andrea swung the silver sword a few times, testing its weight and balance. The blade moved smoothly through the air.
"Andrea."
Seris suddenly called out as she ran towards them, her breathing slightly hurried from rushing across the camp. Andrea looked at her in confusion. She had ordered all utility-based Awakened to evacuate, yet Seris was still here.
"What are you doing here? Didn’t Claire..."
"It’s not her fault. I just didn’t want to leave with the others. Many people need my help, and I’m the strongest healer we’ve got."
Andrea sighed lightly. She understood the reasoning, even if she didn’t particularly agree with Seris ignoring the evacuation order.
Seris didn’t waste any more time explaining herself. She stepped forward and immediately activated her ability. A soft golden hue spread around Andrea’s injured body, covering her wounds in a gentle light.
The difference was almost immediate.
Andrea’s burnt hands began to heal, the damaged flesh gradually closing as Seris continued to pour her ability into her. The wounds left behind by the Chief’s attacks and the siege weapon were slowly repaired, restoring some of the strength Andrea had lost during the battle.
Seris was certainly the strongest healer in the camp.
It was one of the reasons Andrea had wanted her evacuated in the first place.
...
Camila waved her hand, and a metal pole was suddenly thrown far into the distance, disappearing beyond the barricade. She watched it go before lowering her hand, her expression remaining tense.
Daisy was sitting on a wooden crate nearby with her head resting against her palm.
"If you’re that worried, why don’t you try to save him?" Daisy said carelessly.
Camila released a heavy breath.
"Will you come with me?"
Daisy immediately looked away and began admiring the sky as though the conversation had nothing to do with her. It wasn’t that she was cruel. If she could, she would have gone out of her way to help Malik herself, but she was just one person, and there was an entire army of Eidolons gathered outside their gates.
Camila’s expression became increasingly unbelievable as she stared at Daisy. She couldn’t understand how Daisy could sit there so casually while Malik was still somewhere out there with the Eidolons.
Just as Camila was about to grab her by the collar and strangle her, a figure approached them.
It was Claire.
She looked completely exhausted, her body showing the strain of everything that had happened, but she still refused to allow herself to rest. Not while the war was still going on.
She stopped in front of the two women and looked between them.
"Daisy, Camila... why do you two look like you’re trying to murder each other?".
Camila dropped her hand, and with it the big piece of metal she had over Daisy’s head, Daisy now realising that she was seconds away from being crushed to death glared sharply at Camila.
Claire shook her head helplessly. "Just try not to murder each other. If you’re going to die, do it fighting the Eidolons."
She continued walking, but after a few steps, she stopped. She looked back at them.
"If you guys survive this, what are your plans? I mean, if we somehow make it back home, it would be more destroyed than this one, so what then?"
Camila and Daisy were stunned. Neither of them immediately knew how to answer. Claire wasn’t simply asking what they planned to do after returning home. She was questioning the point of it all: the war, the struggle to survive, and what exactly awaited them if they somehow succeeded.
As far as most of them were concerned, there might not even be a reward waiting for them. That didn’t mean they didn’t want to live, it didn’t mean they didn’t want to return home either.
For most of them, simply not wanting to die was enough of a reason to keep fighting. They didn’t need some grand future waiting on the other side of the war. They just needed something to survive for.
Daisy was the first to answer.
"I’m gonna go find my parents and all my siblings. My mother had a lot of us, so it might take me a while. Good thing my Dormant Ability can help me take to the skies, it’s a really good vantage point to search".
Claire’s eyes remained unreadable as she listened. After a moment, she nodded before turning towards Camila. Camila scratched her head, clearly thinking about it for a second before finally answering.
"If Malik is still alive, we’ll find whatever remains of civilization and do our part in rebuilding the human race. We promised each other that a while back. Sounds foolish, I know."
"No, it’s not."
Claire said it without hesitation.
