Chapter 125: I Am Malik.
The Chief raised his fist and brought it down with all his might, his massive body looking like a tower in comparison to Malik’s small frame. The punch came down with enough force to shake the ground, but Malik was sent flying through the air before the Chief even had time to recover from the impact.
The Chief immediately followed.
His massive body moved after Malik, and before Malik could regain his balance, another fist slammed into him. The impact sent him flying again, but the Chief continued after him, refusing to give him any chance to escape.
One punch followed another.
Malik’s body was repeatedly sent through the air as the Chief chased after him, each strike carrying enough force to send him further across the battlefield. The snow beneath them was torn apart by the impacts, leaving deep marks across the frozen ground as the Chief continued his relentless assault.
Malik didn’t speak.
His hazy white eyes remained completely devoid of pupils as his body was thrown around by the Chief’s attacks. Even while being struck repeatedly, there was something unnaturally calm about his expression, as though the person being beaten was only loosely connected to what was happening around him.
The Chief, however, wasn’t interested in understanding him.
He only wanted to crush him.
He followed Malik through the air once more, his enormous fist already pulled back as he prepared another strike, but Malik suddenly raised his hand and pointed a single finger at the Chief.
The Chief’s body froze in place.
Malik continued flying backwards at tremendous speed, disappearing across the battlefield before eventually passing beyond the retreating human army and crashing into a frozen ice mountain. Snow and ice erupted from the impact, burying his body beneath the surface.
Andrea glanced in his direction but didn’t say a word. Hoping Malik would be able to kill the Chief was ludicrous, because whatever that was, it wasn’t Malik anymore. She could only watch as the battlefield continued falling further into chaos around them.
"How do we help him when his ability runs out?" Camila asked Andrea.
Andrea turned away helplessly.
"We do nothing."
As she finished speaking, Malik’s body suddenly shot out of the snow and into the air. Ice fell from his clothes as he rose, his pure white eyes scanning the battlefield with a calm bewitching coldness.
Then his body descended.
He came down like a shooting star, falling directly towards the Chief with tremendous speed. The Chief was already waiting for him, his bloodshot eyes fixed on Malik as a low growl escaped his throat. His body began increasing in size once again, his already enormous frame expanding as his muscles grew heavier and his presence became even more imposing.
Malik continued falling.
The Chief raised himself to meet him.
When the two finally collided, the ground beneath them sank as though it had suddenly turned into liquid. The frozen earth buckled under the force before violently exploding in every direction, sending snow, ice, and chunks of frozen ground rushing away from the point of impact.
When the snow finally settled, the Chief was sprawled across the frozen ground, blood pouring from his chest. Most of his antlers had been broken, and one of his arms was completely missing. The sight was enough to make the surrounding Eidolons hesitate, none of them daring to approach the creature who had just been reduced to such a state.
Malik gradually landed on the frozen ground. He simply stood there, but every Eidolon around him immediately stepped back. His whipping hair slowly settled, and the hazy white in his eyes began fading as his pupils returned. Malik didn’t move a muscle at first, then he turned his head and looked towards the surrounding Eidolons. They trembled and continued backing away.
Malik snorted and glanced at the Chief. His face was a picture of confidence.
"I am so fucking dead. I can’t believe they all left me here. Damn you, Camila. You were supposed to protect me".
He refused to let any of that fear show on his face. Instead, he looked at the Chief with as much confidence as he could manage.
"I only battle worthy opponents, and it is clear to me that you are not one of them. I will spare your life. I will even allow you to flee if you so wish."
The Chief growled before slowly forcing himself back onto his feet. When he finally stood upright, blood flowed freely from his wounds, staining Malik from head to toe. Malik remained completely still, ignoring the warm blood covering his body as he tried desperately not to reveal how terrified he actually was.
The Chief didn’t seem suspicious at all.
"I believe you want a truce, then, between you and I."
Malik calmly nodded.
"Very well, then, but I shall not stop until I win this war. Do you intend to stand in my way?" The Chief paused, studying Malik more carefully. "I see that you look like them, although I felt something familiar while we were fighting. You are not like them, are you?"
Malik didn’t understand a single word he was saying, but he had a strange feeling that agreeing with whatever the Chief wanted to hear was probably the safest option right now. So he puffed out his chest and tried to look even more confident.
"No, not at all. I am..."
He paused for a long moment, searching for something to say before finally settling on the only answer he could think of.
"I am Malik."
The Eidolon didn’t argue. He simply stepped past Malik and continued walking in the direction of the human camp. Soon, the surrounding Eidolons followed closely behind him, leaving Malik standing alone among the wreckage of their battle.
Malik watched them go, still trying to process the fact that he was somehow alive after everything that had just happened. His body was covered in the Chief’s blood, his clothes were damaged, and he could still feel the lingering effects of his Dormant Ability fading from his body.
Just as Malik thought he had finally escaped death, the New Eidolon Priest came into view.
Malik’s heart immediately sank, but he refused to let it show on his face.
"And what do you want, little one?" Malik said coldly, even though the New Eidolon Priest was almost twice his actual size.
The Priest spat on the ground. One of his eyes had been lost somewhere during the aftermath of the siege weapon, so his face was covered in blood, and even the spit that left his mouth was stained red. He slowly approached Malik without saying anything, his remaining eye fixed on him.
Malik tried to keep his cool, but it wasn’t working.
The closer the Priest came, the more Malik could feel his body betraying him. His hands began trembling, followed by his arms, and by the time the Priest came close enough for Malik to feel his breath against his face, his entire body was trembling uncontrollably.
He desperately tried to maintain his expression.
"Do you wish to die?" he asked as calmly as he could muster.
The words sounded threatening enough, at least in his own head.
Just when Malik thought the Priest was about to attack him, however, the Priest’s body was suddenly yanked away from him.
The Divine Priest was now standing beside them as well.
Malik nearly pissed himself when he saw the blue, glistening scales of the Divine Priest. He immediately recognised the creature from earlier and remembered exactly how terrifying it was to see him up close.
The Divine Priest pulled the New Eidolon Priest aside before he could do anything stupid.
"You better avoid starting something with this guy. He’s even more of a monster than the undead wretch. I saw him nearly kill the Chief just a moment ago."
The two Eidolons glanced back at Malik.
He immediately stiffened.
The Divine Priest continued, "You were unconscious at the time. He destroyed the ancient relic. He’s an absolute monster, I tell you."
The New Eidolon Priest slowly glanced back at Malik, this time with a slight trace of fear in his eyes.
"He doesn’t look that different from the rest of them," the New Eidolon Priest said, clearly questioning the Divine Priest’s warning.
The Divine Priest sighed.
"You should know by now that it isn’t about looks. Wasn’t it that little female who tossed you around like a sack of manure?"
The New Eidolon Priest’s expression turned grim.
"You have a point there, it’s not worth it, is it?".
The divine priest nodded.
"Let’s just tag along with the chief for now, kill off the pesky little creatures and then eat their flesh".
... ...
"Open the gates".
Elias quickly ordered the soldiers stationed above the barricade to open the gates, allowing the exhausted survivors to rush inside before the Eidolons could catch up.
He leapt towards Andrea and helped Yuri support her.
"There’s no way you can fight the chief in your condition".
