Chapter 273: A Terrifying Gift for Learning
Over the next few days, Hunter made Danny, Rusty, and the rest of them understand that his claim about having an almost photographic memory was not just talk.
It was real.
And it was the kind of ability that would make anyone jealous.
Linus's father had spent decades refining all kinds of theft techniques.
Linus himself had spent more than ten years learning and mastering them.
But after only a few hours of learning from Linus, Hunter had already impressed him to the point of panic.
Because Hunter was so agile, Linus quickly realized that while Hunter's technique was still crude and nowhere near his level, the results were already shockingly close.
Against most ordinary people, Hunter could probably brush past them and lift whatever he wanted before they even noticed.
And that was after only a few hours of instruction.
Linus had spent more than a decade learning under his father to reach that level.
The shock Linus felt was easy to imagine.
But he was not the only one who had been stunned.
Livingston, the hacker who was the second person to teach Hunter, was soon shaken by the Asian man's terrifying learning ability as well.
The moment Livingston started working with him, he could tell Hunter already had a foundation in computers.
But he also noticed that while Hunter's theory was solid, most of it seemed like something memorized straight from textbooks.
He had very little sense of how to use that knowledge flexibly.
At first, Livingston had not planned to teach him very seriously.
He intended to pass along only enough to get by.
But once he started teaching Hunter basic computer techniques, he quickly realized that this handsome Asian man already had more than enough knowledge to work with.
Nearly every technique he showed him only had to be seen once before Hunter remembered it and started using it immediately.
Livingston soon discovered that the tricks he had originally planned to use just to get through the lessons had all been learned by Hunter already.
And when Hunter calmly asked him for more, Livingston could not help thinking of the scene a few days earlier, when this guy had worn that feral grin and brutally put down Ruben's eight bodyguards, leaving them in the hospital.
A chill ran through him.
In the end, Livingston suppressed his little schemes.
He started teaching Hunter a lot more of his computer methods and tricks, including some real hacking techniques.
And the Asian man who claimed to have a photographic memory lived up to every word.
In just two days, Livingston felt like he had taught Hunter almost everything he knew.
A lot of it had never even been intended for other people in the first place.
Computer skills, especially hacking tricks and techniques, had taken Livingston years of painful trial and error to learn.
He had never expected to teach them all to someone else this easily.
Bash, the explosives expert in Danny's crew, was far more relaxed than the other two.
He had loved explosives since he was a child. His father worked in a mine and handled detonators.
Because of that, Bash had been around explosive materials from an early age.
But most of what he knew about bombs and charges had been self-taught later on.
Once he had learned enough, Bash would make explosives and sell them on the black market for cash.
That got him betrayed once and landed him in prison for several years.
After getting out, he became smarter.
He stopped casually making explosives for other people to use.
Instead, he formed his own crew and started stealing, even robbing when necessary.
Over the years, Bash had taught himself a huge amount about how explosives worked.
From tiny devices to high-yield bombs, he could build them from cheap materials bought at a supermarket or farm supply store, if he had to.
So when he found out Hunter wanted to learn explosives, Bash was surprised, but genuinely happy.
He was the most willing of the three to teach Hunter everything he knew.
And because Bash's own knowledge had also been self-taught, it had not taken him much time to master it either.
That was why Hunter's absurdly fast progress did not shock him as much.
Of course, even he could not avoid being a little surprised.
After all, Hunter had learned almost everything Bash could teach him in just a little over two days.
A few days later, still inside that same warehouse, Danny watched Hunter talking with Bash.
Hunter no longer seemed as difficult to deal with as he had been on the first day.
Danny turned to Rusty and asked, "He learned everything?"
Rusty sighed and pulled an energy bar from his pocket.
He bit off half of it and chewed before answering.
"Just like he said, the guy really is a monster."
"He really does have photographic memory. Most knowledge and techniques, he only needs to see once before he remembers them, and then he picks them up fast."
"Hunter has already learned the basics from all three of them over these last few days."
"I asked Linus and Livingston about it. They both said Hunter is still behind them by a fair bit, but he is improving way too fast."
"He will probably catch up before long."
Rusty paused, then added with a helpless look, "He even found time to learn cheating techniques from me."
"And after I mentioned that Frank knew some card magic, he even went and pestered Frank until Frank taught him that too."
Frank was Black and also one of Danny's crew members.
He had worked in casinos for years, so he had plenty of dealer experience and was also good at collecting casino intelligence.
Very few people knew that Frank was also a gambling expert, and like Rusty, he knew how to cheat.
Danny and Rusty had met Frank years earlier when they caught him cheating during a card game.
Danny twitched at the corner of his mouth and looked at Rusty, frowning.
"You taught him all that?"
Rusty nodded.
Danny was silent for a moment, then suddenly asked, "Did he take you guys to the casino?"
Rusty's face immediately lit up.
Hunter had not only taken him and Frank to the casino, he had also helped both of them each walk away with several hundred thousand dollars in profit.
Even though Hunter did not need money, Rusty and Frank certainly were not going to turn it down.
So after Hunter showed them some goodwill, they both very sensibly taught him everything they knew.
