Chapter 272: Three New Skills
Watching Ruben's retreating back, Hunter finally felt the tension in his legs ease up.
He pulled a silk handkerchief from his suit pocket and wiped the sweat from his brow.
Then he noticed the way the others in the crew were looking at him.
Ruben felt his face burn.
He wanted to lash out and bark at them, but everyone had seen his humiliation. They had seen him backed into a corner by Hunter's bloodstained knife, forced to call his bank and order six million dollars transferred into an account Hunter had specified.
Just thinking about it made Ruben want to dig a hole and crawl into it.
He had even thought about getting revenge later.
But for some reason, Hunter's decisiveness and his calm, flat tone still echoed in Ruben's mind.
For once, the old man actually felt a little afraid.
All he could do was shout angrily, "What are you looking at!"
Then he snorted and walked off without looking back.
Only after Ruben disappeared through the warehouse doors did the rest of Danny's crew exchange glances and start smiling.
"Come on, let's go take a look."
Tex said that to his brother Virgil.
The two of them were brothers and both specialized in car modification.
They loved stirring up trouble.
They had not taken much of Ruben's attitude personally, but they still thought the casino boss was a smug, self-important bastard just because he had a little money.
"Bash, do you think Ruben will get revenge on that guy? He just conned six million out of him."
Thinking of the six million Ruben had grudgingly wired over at knife point, everyone swallowed hard.
That was six million dollars.
More than several times the payout each of them would receive after the heist.
"Yen, that guy seems a lot like you."
Livingston, the hacker, called over to the lean figure nearby.
Yen was Chinese. Danny and Rusty had recruited him when the circus came through the United States.
When they had talked the agile young man into joining the crew, they had not only promised him at least a million dollars if the job succeeded, but also promised to help him get a green card.
Yen looked on with a kind of quiet admiration at Hunter, who had already gone off with Danny and Rusty to discuss cooperation in a corner of the warehouse.
He had practiced circus performance since he was a child. He was more agile than most people and had decent strength too.
But someone like Hunter, who could casually put down so many men, was beyond him.
"I do not know."
His English was poor, so he said it in Chinese.
But inwardly, he had already made up his mind. He absolutely had to get Hunter's contact information and find a way to become his friend later, if possible. Better yet, maybe he could latch onto this huge thigh and ride it upward.
Back in China, Yen had dated several girlfriends because of his height, and every single one eventually dumped him for being too short.
The worst one had even promised to marry him if he could buy a wedding apartment.
Instead, she spent the money he had earned putting his life on the line in circus performances, then got her fill from some tall, rich guy for free, only to be dumped by him afterward.
And that disgusting woman had gone straight to another wealthy man.
After being discarded, Yen finally understood the nature of women.
He swore he would make enough money someday that all those women who had looked down on him would come crawling to him instead.
That was why, among Danny's thieves, Yen was the one most obsessed with money.
And that was also why he had voluntarily taken on the most dangerous work.
Whatever the case, in a corner of the warehouse, Danny and Rusty looked at Hunter, who had already returned to his calm, expressionless state, and for a moment neither of them knew what to say.
This was definitely a dangerous man.
They had both seen what Hunter had done just now.
The handsome Asian young man had crushed Ruben in a terrifyingly short amount of time.
He had also crippled Ruben's eight bodyguards and sent them all to the hospital.
And on top of that, he had squeezed six million dollars out of Ruben.
Even if that money had originally been Ruben's idea, it still counted.
Hunter seemed to notice the caution Danny and Rusty were now showing him.
He shrugged.
"You were the ones who invited me here. If you do not need me now, I can leave."
He was still interested in Linus's theft skills, Livingston's computer and hacking skills, Rusty's cheating techniques, and even Bash's explosives work.
But he was not the kind of man who would lick boots and beg to be let in.
Besides, he had simply shown up and walked away with six million dollars.
That was a very good deal in his book.
So if Danny and the others wanted to say no, he would leave without another word.
Danny and Rusty were now wary of Hunter, but Hunter's terrifying gambling skill had still made them reluctant to let him go.
Danny answered at once.
"Hunter, Ruben may be sponsoring this job, but he does not speak for all of us."
Rusty did not want to keep dwelling on the Ruben issue either.
They had already talked with Hunter the day before and knew he wanted to learn skills from the team.
So he shifted the topic.
"Yesterday we already went over the basic info on everyone in the crew."
"So, which of us do you want to learn from?"
Before Hunter arrived, he had already decided on two of them.
He wanted Linus's theft techniques and Livingston's computer and hacking skills.
For the third choice, he had been undecided.
Bash's explosives craftsmanship would let Hunter produce and modify explosives in quantity.
But Rusty's cheating techniques were also tempting.
In truth, Hunter had not made up his mind yesterday.
Now, with Rusty asking again, he thought it over carefully and finally made his choice.
"That guy Linus. I want to learn his theft techniques."
"And I want to learn computer-related skills from your hacker."
"And the one who makes explosives. I want that skill too."
Danny and Rusty exchanged a glance, then both nodded.
"Deal."
They had already spoken to the crew members about this.
Even Linus, who had been somewhat reluctant before, had ultimately stayed quiet once he thought about the million-plus dollars he could pocket if the job succeeded.
Danny and Rusty also believed that after watching Hunter's brutal takedown of Ruben, none of the others would have any further objections.
Hunter knew that too.
And in a very good mood, he already knew he was about to trigger three new skills.
