Chapter 263: You’re Afraid Terra Will Settle Accounts with You, Aren’t You, Shaw?
As Matthew watched Kurt's delighted figure retreat into the distance, a thoughtful expression settled over his face.
Kurt Wagner—Nightcrawler.
He had grown up in a circus. His hands and feet could cling to all kinds of solid surfaces, and he was highly agile, skilled with swords, and capable of instantly teleporting himself and others.
Because of his blue skin, pointed ears, fangs, and long, sharp tail, ordinary humans saw him as a demon, and he was often attacked.
According to the normal timeline, he would have gone on to assassinate the President of the United States before experiencing a series of events that eventually led him to join the X-Men.
Although his childhood had been painful, Kurt himself was introverted and kind. He was also a devout Catholic.
Of course, after joining Terra, Matthew had no intention of interfering with his faith. However, society's influence was powerful, and it was only a matter of time before this believer's faith began to change.
Kurt's ability was highly practical. He was a natural assassin, and his mobility was unmatched. He could teleport himself and others anywhere within his line of sight. His true limit was unknown, but under normal conditions, his range was usually two to three miles.
He could also bring heavy objects or people with him while teleporting, and the activation speed was absurdly fast.
He could control it on his own. On the strategic level, because Terra had magical portals, Kurt's ability was not especially important in that area.
Even his individual combat ability was average. After all, although Kurt was skilled in swordsmanship and close combat, his physical body was nothing special.
At most, he could bully ordinary people and common mutants.
But many things could not be judged that simply.
If Kurt were injected with serum, his life level would increase, and his ability would certainly grow stronger as well. With systematic training, learning the Six Powers, and awakening all three types of Haki, once he combined all of that with his ability—
Kurt's individual combat power would become far from ordinary.
Especially in ground-to-air combat.
Even for Astartes soldiers, moving from the ground to the sky still required a burst of movement and a bit of time. Kurt was different. With just one glance and one use of his ability, he could instantly reach the sky.
His ability had no warning and no startup delay.
The boost it gave in real combat was ridiculous.
There was a saying: any ability involving time or space was basically never weak.
Most importantly, he could bring people with him.
Sure enough, accepting mutants was a profitable plan.
Not only could it bring him a large population, it could also help him cultivate soldiers with outstanding abilities from among them.
Aside from that, Kurt's father was also a famous mutant.
A mutant whose appearance resembled a demon—the Red Devil.
His real name was Azazel. The Red Devil was one of the oldest mutants still alive, belonging to a group of demon-like mutants known as the Neyaphem.
They were defeated by another mutant race and banished to a dimension called Brimstone.
Of course, this Brimstone Dimension was actually one of the hell dimensions.
That dimension could connect to various places in the real world, but among that race, only the Red Devil could move in the real world for short periods of time.
The Red Devil's ability was similar to Nightcrawler's, but stronger.
First, the Red Devil was immortal and had an extremely long lifespan. He could also shapeshift, disguising his appearance through unknown means.
He also had will-bending, the ability to control the minds of others, but the most important part was his space-time manipulation.
He could teleport himself, his clothes, and extra matter across different dimensions.
To permanently return himself and his people to reality, the Red Devil created a plan.
That plan was to have children. He would mate with women who had unusual appearances or abilities, and because his children were connected to his dimension, he could use them to create a stable passage between dimensions.
In the end, Azazel planned to sacrifice dozens of his own children to complete the ritual that would free him and his companions, allowing them to return and rule the real world.
At present, he should still be a member of the Hellfire Club.
Classic, Matthew thought. One could only say that the Marvel universe truly had its own unique way of doing things.
Matthew held little personal interest in Azazel. The man's abilities were impressive enough, but a morally twisted monster like him was far better suited for a dissection table in a laboratory.
Matthew quite enjoyed stories of young heroes slaying dragons. So he decided to train Kurt personally. When the time came, Nightcrawler could give his biological father a grand surprise.
…
On the ocean, atop the deck of a luxury yacht, the beautiful and dazzling White Queen lay on a beach chair, wearing sunglasses against the bright sun.
She was dressed rather warmly, though.
After all, it was still cold this month even with the sun out.
Although the White Queen was one of the strongest telepathic mutants in the world, her physical body was not that strong. Even if she could turn herself into diamond form, she would still feel cold when she should.
Beside her sat the Black Queen and the Black King.
Besides them, there was also the Red Devil, one of the core members, whose figure and appearance were almost no different from a demon's.
The leaders of the best-hidden mutant organization in the world had gathered together.
"I heard the club has been rather restless these past two days," the Black Queen said with a smile, brushing back the hair that had been blown loose by the sea wind as she looked at the Black King.
The Black King, Sebastian Shaw, wore a white suit with a red pen on his chest. He looked elegant, but there was a trace of gloom in him.
"People are getting unsettled. With the empire established by that person in Eastern Europe, and that declaration, mutants all over the world have gone mad. Our people are no exception."
Shaw leaned lazily against the yacht's deck railing, casually holding a fishing rod. He seemed to be looking at the sea, but his attention was clearly elsewhere.
He was obviously irritated.
The Red Devil, the White Queen, and the Black Queen could all see it.
And they all understood why.
The Hellfire Club was ruled by a core group made up of a small number of highly influential people.
The four mutants present formed its core. Of course, there were also many humans in the club, and the members of its core group were named after chess pieces.
This core group controlled the Hellfire Club and quietly influenced its activities to seize more power and wealth.
Its long-term goal was to overthrow human rule and establish a world led by mutants.
But now, that plan had begun to shake.
The reason was the Mutant Immigration Act issued by Terra.
This act affected not only the countries of the world, but also organizations large and small that had mutants.
The Hellfire Club was one of them.
Many members were dissatisfied with the current situation and wanted more—strength, stability, and the chance to immigrate to Terra.
But Shaw could never agree.
The Hellfire Club quietly influenced the world from the shadows, but it could never be exposed.
Especially not to Terra, an empire that had only just been founded yet already possessed abnormal strength.
Shaw was very confident in himself and in the power of the members around him.
He firmly believed the future belonged to him.
Until Terra appeared and shattered his ambition completely.
Shaw knew exactly how powerful the mutants he had gathered were, but against Terra, he could no longer feel confident.
Leaving aside that mysterious and powerful Emperor, the presence shown by the Astartes, Raven, and Grey Knights, along with their numbers, was enough to crush anyone's ambition and confidence.
Shaw was not sure what the true purpose behind Terra's founding was.
But he had to prepare for the worst.
If someone built an empire, would it expand?
Shaw saw the key point clearly. If Terra did not plan to expand, why issue the Mutant Immigration Act?
Mutants might be a burden to other countries, but to Terra, they were a huge population bonus.
Mutants made up a very small portion of the world's population, perhaps around twenty million in total.
But even if only half of them immigrated to Terra, that enormous population would force Terra to take its next step.
Territorial expansion.
What was the original purpose of Terra's founding?
To protect Earth? To shelter mankind? To protect displaced mutants and give those poor people who could no longer survive a stable society to live in?
Bullshit.
Shaw judged others by himself. He had never believed in so-called kindness or mercy. He only believed in power and ambition.
Someone with power beyond human imagination would actually protect those at the bottom?
Shaw would only sneer at that.
He believed the so-called Emperor definitely had ambition.
And that ambition was called rule.
He believed that one day, the Emperor would start a war, expand step by step, destroy one nation's system after another, and bring the entire world into Terra's territory.
That was why Shaw was so anxious.
Everyone present was sharp. Although Shaw had not said it outright, they all understood what he was thinking.
After a brief exchange of glances, the Red Devil was the first to break the silence. His voice was deep, carrying the weight of long years.
"You're worried about Terra?"
"I'm worried about all of us," Shaw answered without hesitation.
"Worried about all of us? the White Queen repeated softly, letting the words linger before letting out a soft, mocking laugh."I think you're worried Terra will settle accounts with you."
What she saw in the Terra Empire was fairness and order.
Better treatment for good people. Harsher judgment for evil ones.
With Terra's style, there was no way it would tolerate a criminal like Sebastian Shaw, whose hands were covered in sin.
In terms of crimes alone, Shaw was worse than all of them.
Shaw's expression turned cold at once, but he quickly recovered.
His gaze swept over the White Queen, the Black Queen, and the Red Devil one by one.
Then he said softly, "Every one of us, without exception, would be unable to escape if judgment truly came."
"The growth of the club was built on our repeated plundering. In that process, all of our hands were stained with blood."
"We are an inseparable whole."
He paused, looking at them. "Aren't we?"
His words plunged the group back into silence.
Only after a long moment did Shaw speak again, as if talking to himself:
"Terra has brought so-called hope to the world, but that hope belongs to those at the bottom."
"They long for so-called fairness, but is Terra truly fair?"
"Or is it just a beautiful lie?"
"Power and wealth have never come from fairness. They come from oppression. So I believe some people are just like me. They are worried too."
