Chapter 153: Building the Magic Warband
After achieving his objective, Matthew did not stay at the school for long.
Even though, in his mind, he had already quietly changed the school's name to his own.
But good things could wait. He would take it slowly.
That said, there really were many mutants in the school with outstanding abilities.
For example, Iceman Bobby, whose ability to create low temperatures could theoretically grow to the point of freezing time; Colossus, who normally possessed strength in the hundred-ton range and could clash head-on with Juggernaut and the Hulk; Kitty Pryde, and others.
Mutants were the most unreasonable group in this world.
Physics simply did not exist in front of certain mutants.
One of the most basic terms in the tacit deal between Matthew and Professor X had already been completed.
What he needed now was something that could truly put the professor's mind at ease.
Territory.
No matter how beautifully Matthew spoke, no matter how much room for imagination he gave, before he had a piece of territory, that old man would never casually place all his chips on Matthew's side.
Whether out of caution or consideration for all mutants.
Matthew was not in a hurry about this. Accepting mutants in the future was one part of his plan, and Professor X's reputation was too great. He was a banner among mutants.
With him, receiving mutants in the future would go much more smoothly.
But those were all matters for later.
For now, Matthew would go back and finish building the Magic Warband first.
The creation of the Magic Warband meant that he would grasp technology with one hand and magic with the other. The foundation for building an empire would be completely solidified.
It would be able to withstand most risks in the future.
...
At the island base, after Matthew returned, the second phase of Warband selection had begun entering its final review stage in an orderly manner.
The estimated number of soldiers selected in the second batch was around five thousand.
Once the second batch began training, the screening and observation for the third batch would immediately start, allowing another selection to begin half a year later.
The soldiers Matthew had recruited from countries all over the world came from many nations, and their numbers had already exceeded one hundred thousand.
Selecting five thousand people from one hundred thousand seemed like a low ratio, but in reality, it was already very high.
This kind of selection was not as simple as an ordinary person joining the army.
The assessment standards were extremely strict. They included daily observation, background investigation, conduct, whether a series of standards were met during mission execution, and a final evaluation.
Matthew's side was no longer some crude grassroots team. Especially in the early stage of building his force, many things had to be strictly followed.
Even after the first five thousand were selected, Reacher and Natasha still had to lead a group of instructors through the final interviews.
The interview questions had been drafted by a psychological expert like Natasha.
Through these questions, they would use Observation Haki to identify subtle changes. Anyone who failed even slightly would be sent back.
Of course, these selections had little to do with Matthew.
He controlled the strategic blueprint and overall direction, while details were carried out by senior members such as Reacher and the others.
Matthew's most important task now was to complete the final construction of the punch universe.
As mentioned at the beginning, he had found a dimension filled with infinite energy. This held extraordinary meaning not only for himself, but also for the Magic Warband he intended to build.
It meant that the members of his Magic Warband could learn magic and mobilize energy from that dimension to cast spells.
They would not need to establish a contract with the Vishanti's magical dimension like the sorcerers of Kamar-Taj did.
However, after discovering this universe, there was still one key question in how to mobilize and use it.
How could the energy of that dimension be transformed into magical energy?
Matthew had thought of a solution. He could set up a magical barrier inside the punch universe.
This fixed magical barrier would continuously draw energy from the Punch Dimension Universe. While maintaining its own operation, it would also possess the function of converting that energy into magical energy.
This would allow the future soldiers of the Magic Warband to skip that troublesome step when using magic.
But Matthew quickly rejected the idea.
Because he realized that he was a leader, not a nanny. This seemingly simple step was indeed something he could help the soldiers bypass.
But would that really be good?
In the process of learning magic, difficulties and bottlenecks might delay a person's growth. Yet once those difficulties were overcome, was that not also a form of growth?
If he removed that difficult process, he would also be removing an important part of their growth.
So Matthew gave up on it.
Instead, he constructed a magical barrier, or rather, a contract.
Something similar to the Vishanti.
Anyone who borrowed energy from the Punch Universe had to pass through this magical barrier, and in the process, they would sign a contract.
The terms were very simple, not as domineering as the Vishanti's.
There was only one condition. After the contract was signed, Matthew would be recognized as the highest authority. Using magical energy required his authorization. And if someone developed disloyal thoughts, or was bewitched for some other reason and betrayed him, Matthew, as the highest authority, would receive a warning.
He could then lock onto the traitor and revoke their access at any time.
This was a layer of insurance Matthew casually put in place.
Compared with other black-hearted bosses, this tiny little function was far too conscientious, especially when compared with the Vishanti.
The energy source had been completed. The remaining step was to inform the two Warbands. The Astartes Warband was positioned as a charge-and-assault unit, suited for large-scale and squad combat, while the Raven Warband leaned more toward individual operations.
Regardless, both Warbands were soldiers at their core. Matthew didn't mind. Who said soldiers and sorcerers had to be clearly separated? Learning magic was so convenient.
Training both magic and martial ability was the true answer to the current version.
Putting everything else aside, when facing lifeforms from other dimensions, possessing magic would make it much easier to respond and cause damage.
In his plan, the two Warbands would still mainly focus on physical training, with magic as support.
The Magic Warband would specialize in magic, while also supporting it with physical training.
Glass cannons were unacceptable.
If they were going to develop, they had to develop in a rounded way. Even a hexagon was not enough.
So the daily training of the two Warbands gained another item. The two Warbands, whose training schedules were already full, now had to set aside some time to study magic.
But no one complained.
On the contrary, every soldier was extremely excited.
After all, magic was far too practical.
Training continued in full swing.
At the same time, the selection for the first batch of the Magic Warband was personally handled by Matthew, with Needy assisting.
After all, Needy would be appointed by Matthew as the Commander of the Magic Warband in the future. She needed to become familiar with personnel arrangements and the members.
The girl was very excited, and Jennifer was even more excited.
Needy at least still needed rest, but Jennifer was completely wild. She did not need to rest at all. Because of that, Jennifer's progress in learning magic was even ahead of her close friend Needy by quite a bit.
The two girls could even pull off the strange trick of temporarily switching control of the body.
When using magic, Jennifer could instantly take over Needy's body and cast spells.
