Chapter 85 - 80: Take It One Step at a Time
Anger was one thing, but he still had to face the problem.
Luh Yao initially tried to deal with it passively.
’I’ll just refuse to do anything. Heh. I’ll just let it hang there, stuck on the naming part.’
But even though this led to a stalemate, it didn’t help him get past the current hurdle. What’s more, the naming interface covered most of the screen, severely obstructing his view and preventing him from seeing the little people’s movements.
Continuing this standoff wasn’t a solution.
Luh Yao sank into deep thought.
’Is there another way to change the situation?’
’What if I just use lightning to smash this Beast Fighting Arena to bits?’
’If I destroy it, won’t the Wonder be gone?’
He gave it a try but found he couldn’t perform any actions at all.
The naming prompt had extremely high priority. If this step wasn’t completed, all other actions and features would remain locked.
Then, Luh Yao had another idea.
’Normally, if you make a mistake in a game, there’s a way to force a reload of a previous save...’
’It’s just that this method is a little risky.’
’Screw it, I’m doing it!’
He yanked out the power cord, and the computer instantly shut off. The room was immediately plunged into darkness.
Luh Yao was startled. He looked around and saw that the other residents in the complex outside his window still had power; only his place had a blackout.
’How freaky is that?’
He had just been thinking of using a classic gamer trick to force the game to revert to a previous save. In many games, as long as you haven’t entered a cutscene, you can preserve your last save this way.
Luh Yao took out his phone to check and discovered he was simply behind on his electricity bill. He quickly topped it up with five hundred yuan, then went to the utility closet to reset it with his power card.
Sure enough, the lights in his apartment flickered back on.
Filled with anticipation, he booted up his computer, opened the simulator, and selected "Continue Game."
The screen slowly spun, then returned to the previous scene.
—You shall name it the ______ Beast Fighting Arena.
The glitch-abuse tactic failed.
Luh Yao was at a loss.
If he kept stalling, it would be the equivalent of running in place. There was no benefit to it.
’Forget it. I’ll just take it one step at a time.’
Luh Yao adjusted his mindset and typed a few words on his keyboard.
The screen immediately returned to its normal display.
[The Garlic Tribe has constructed the first Wonder: the Beer Beast Fighting Arena.]
[Everyone’s intelligence has slightly increased.]
[Everyone’s luck has slightly increased.]
[The Garlic Tribe has domesticated pigs.]
A [Wonder] tab appeared in the top left corner.
At the same time, the Apostle Mark counter in the top-left corner changed from 0 to 1.
These buffs didn’t make Luh Yao relax in the slightest; he watched nervously for further developments.
After displaying three lines of positive feedback, no other notifications appeared on the game interface.
’What does the Divine Hall of the Gods have to say?’
Luh Yao clicked on the Divine Hall.
Inside, everything was basically the same. The portraits of his two Apostles were above the Divine Hall, and in front of the Divine Statue were the two slots: [Blessing] and [Sacrificial Offering].
The only difference was the faint silhouette of a Palace that had appeared behind the Divine Statue.
Luh Yao tried moving his mouse over the blurry background.
A new notification then appeared on the game interface.
[You are now qualified to enter the Divine Hall of the Gods.]
[Please use the Power of Faith to forge the Stairway to Divinity in order to enter the Divine Hall of the Gods and take your place among the Gods.]
Luh Yao saw a spiral staircase appear in the Divine Hall, extending from in front of the Divine Statue all the way to the distant silhouette of the Divine Hall of the Gods.
[Stairway to Divinity (0/6666)]
He saw that the Stairway to Divinity required 6,666 Faith.
Luh Yao burst out laughing.
’As if I’m gonna pay that entrance fee!’
He originally thought that building the Wonder would lead to a forced Ascension or something... but it looked like he’d been overthinking things.
The entrance fee for the Divine Hall of the Gods was certainly steep.
It would cost a little over 10,000 Faith just to become one of the Gods.
Luh Yao relaxed and moved his mouse back over the Wonder.
...
[Beer Beast Fighting Arena]: A Wonder constructed by the Garlic Tribe in the Beast Fighting Era. Beast fighting drives everyone to Madness.
All who train in the Beast Fighting Arena will receive a permanent combat boost, Damage +3.
...
Luh Yao was delighted.
A Wonder was a special structure that could provide buffs to the entire civilization.
The Beast Fighting Arena’s +3 damage boost didn’t seem like much. But considering the tens of thousands of people in the Garlic Tribe, as well as the various wielders of Extraordinary Power under Luh Yao’s command, the cumulative effect of this buff was quite substantial.
Luh Yao immediately ordered Isabel and the Blood Knight to train in the Beast Fighting Arena. It was equivalent to obtaining a permanent piece of minor equipment—the sooner they went, the sooner they’d get the boost.
Then he had Isabel summon the Forest Elemental Creatures one by one. With the exception of the Tree People, who couldn’t leave the forest because of the Forest Soul, the creatures of Isabelle’s Creation would undergo a collective training session in the Beast Fighting Arena, which was essentially a small level-up for each of them.
Only after doing all this did Luh Yao feel a sense of security.
’You have to use good things when you get them. If you don’t, it’s the same as not having them, isn’t it?’
Suddenly, the little people of the Garlic Tribe sent a message: deep in the northern forest, they had discovered a suspected God and traces of heretical Believers’ activity.
Luh Yao’s spirits lifted. ’Perfect timing.’
’Let’s see if this is a new player or some old-timer who’s been hiding out here.’
...
In the interrogation room, Jia Xiaokai raised a hand to smooth his thinning hair.
"Prosecutor Songx, I’m a victim. Everything I did, I was forced to do by the [Whistleblower]."
"I’m just a Subordinate God. What could I have done?"
"The situation in the Divine Hall of the Gods is complicated. When I first ascended to join the Gods, I was weak and constantly facing all kinds of threats, so I had no choice but to find a group to rely on for protection. That’s why I joined the [Whistleblower] and became Its Subordinate God."
"Once you join an organization, your hands are tied. You have to follow orders. You of all people should understand that, Prosecutor Songx."
Jia Xiaokai leaned back slightly, placing his hands on his thighs. He seemed completely relaxed.
Songx Shiyi sat bolt upright. "Why have you never mentioned the ’key’?"
"That’s a private matter. Besides, I don’t have the key; I only know some related clues. And it’s not my personal property."
The middle-aged man lifted his hand, his fingers drumming lightly on the table.
"Prosecutor Songx, I believe the Committee has a ’witness protection program.’ If someone provides exceptional evidence or testimony, they can receive the Committee’s long-term protection and resettlement... How about we make a deal?"
"I’ll tell you some exclusive secrets."
"As for me, I don’t want much. There’s a special provision in the witness protection program—when necessary, a witness can be given a new identity."
Jia Xiaokai paused. "I want to walk a different path."
"For example, joining the Committee."
"Impossible."
Songx Shiyi rejected him outright. "You have a criminal record and have had a detrimental impact on society... That violates the Committee’s basic requirements for personnel selection."
"So, no room for negotiation?" Jia Xiaokai spread his hands.
"I can apply for the witness protection program for you. However, the testimony and information you provide must stand up to verification. Only once it’s confirmed will you meet the conditions for the application."
Jia Xiaokai’s lips twitched, his smile fading. "I’ve always believed there’s an exception to every rule. Since we’re talking about cooperation, let me first show a bit of good faith."
"Prosecutor Songx, do you know what happens after a God falls?"
Songx Shiyi countered, "Are you talking about players?"
"Everyone knows about players. That part of their experience is simply erased completely. It’s just part of the simulator’s screening mechanism."
Jia Xiaokai clicked his tongue and pointed a finger upward. "I’m talking about Titled Deities and the Main Gods above them... in other words, the true Gods."
"The [Whistleblower] once said that before the Forest God fell, It underwent Demotion and merged with a Low Realm Dimension... It is very likely sleeping in one of the Fragment Worlds."
"The [Whistleblower] continuously sends people into the many Fragment Worlds sloughed off by the Forest God. The real reason is that It wants to capture the Forest God’s [Divine Body] after Its dimensional descent."
"Although this would cause the Forest God to lose all Its past memories and Divinity, It would retain Its former growth potential and some of its abilities. In other words, given enough time, Its upper limit is that of a Main God."
Jia Xiaokai paused, then said unhurriedly, "If one could find the Forest God’s Divine Body, it would theoretically be possible to recreate a Main God... Do you understand what I mean?"
Songx Shiyi’s expression grew solemn.
