Chapter 82 - 77: It Was a Misunderstanding
A black Audi drove into the parking alley. Lin Zecheng tactfully went over, opened the car door, and got into the back seat.
Song Shiyi did not leave immediately.
She looked at the green-haired girl standing under the streetlight.
"Thank you very much."
This girl, who called herself Mary, was also a mystery in Song Shiyi’s notes.
There was no such Apostle in the Committee’s database. Song Shiyi knew nothing about the player behind Mary.
However, this was not an obstacle.
To Song Shiyi, actions were more persuasive than identity.
Someone praised by the public was not necessarily a good person, and an unpopular person was not necessarily untrustworthy.
The key was what this person did.
This Mary before her had two clear records in the notes: capturing Yuan Lisha and handing her over to the Committee, and calling to warn about the [Whistleblower] and Fu Chenggang.
She stood on the side of Order.
Song Shiyi was a little curious. ’Could the player behind Mary be someone I know?’
’To hide their identity, they summoned a brand-new Apostle to act in their stead.’
’Is that it?’
’But the word "familiar" doesn’t really suit me.’
’For someone who’s always forgetting and then reviewing the past, even if I have so-called acquaintances, all that’s left now is their one-sided memory of me.’
Song Shiyi maintained the good habit of always looking forward.
She said, "Well then, I’ll be going."
Mary spoke up. "I need the files on the Whistleblower."
Song Shiyi hesitated for a moment.
The Committee’s database had information on the [Whistleblower], but these files were generally forbidden from being shared. This was not only for confidentiality but also to prevent panic.
Song Shiyi mentally reviewed the Committee’s various rules and regulations.
The Regulations stipulated: In matters related to the God Simulator, prosecutors on the Committee’s roster have the authority for independent investigation and supervision.
Verifying information fell within the normal scope of her duties.
"Wait for me a moment."
Song Shiyi walked over to the black Audi, connected her phone to a portable printer, and after passing an identity verification, accessed the database...
A few minutes later, she returned with a stack of papers in a file folder and handed it to Mary.
"This is the information I could access with my clearance. It’s for reference only, please do not leak it. You’re also welcome to point out any errors or gaps in our information."
Mary nodded. "Thank you. Understood."
Song Shiyi got back into the Audi, and the car slowly pulled away.
Through the rearview mirror, she saw Mary in the alley, flipping through the documents page by page.
...
Through Isabel’s eyes, Luh Yao carefully read the text on the printed pages.
"[Whistleblower], Titled Deity, currently located in the Flying District, ranked 179th in the Divine Hall of the Gods. Danger Level: A."
"Identity is a lifeform from an unknown High-Dimensional World; specifics unknown."
"According to statistics, the [Whistleblower] has caused the downfall of 4 Titled Deities, killed 169 Gods, and non-Titled Gods are unable to stand against it..."
"The [Whistleblower] is known to have 19 Subordinate Gods, all of whom are Gods, including... Prayer God (Jia Xiaokai)..."
...
Only then did Luh Yao realize the [Whistleblower] was not human.
He’d had a faint feeling before that there might be non-human participants behind the God Simulator. After all, the simulator connected numerous World Dimensions, and the human world on Earth was just one of them.
The Committee had confirmed this.
The [Skinner], who had invaded the Fragment World along with the [Whistleblower], was clearly in the same tier. The power gap between them could not be large; otherwise, the Skinner wouldn’t have been qualified to come in and get a piece of the pie.
The Committee’s file was detailed and comprehensive. Many of the terms and conclusions were accompanied by entire paragraphs of citations and notes, much like an academic paper.
With the help of this file, Luh Yao finally understood the player hierarchy in the simulator.
The most numerous were the new players, also known as Apprentice Deities in the simulator.
After entering the Divine Hall of the Gods, players were promoted to become [Gods].
The next step up from Gods was [Titled Deities].
And above them were the [Main Gods].
As for the specific differences between the player tiers, the file did not elaborate.
But Luh Yao understood at least one thing.
As long as one didn’t enter the Divine Hall of the Gods, they enjoyed rule-based protection within the Broken World. The Committee was unable to determine the identity of every new player, so its primary stance toward this group was one of protection.
This swept away Luh Yao’s lingering worries.
’The safe zone is, for the most part, safe.’
’It’s dangerous outside. I’d better just focus on developing in the Fragment World for now.’
Speaking of developing... he had to mention the spoils of war from this encounter.
Luh Yao looked at the two Artifacts Isabel had brought back.
One was the [Identity Card] that Lin Zecheng had mentioned.
It looked like a blank white playing card, and felt delicate and pliable to the touch.
...
[Identity Card LV3]: Faith +3/hour. Can activate [Fictional Impression].
Write an identity on the card, and the holder will project the corresponding fictional impression onto others. The effect is strongest the first time an identity is presented and diminishes with repeated use. It also works on the holder.
...
Luh Yao had a realization.
’No wonder I let my guard down completely when I first met Lin Zecheng, completely taken in by my first impression. This ability is truly imperceptible.’
’With the [Identity Card], I can really craft a virtual persona. Carrying this, Isabel will be far more covert and safe when moving between the two worlds.’
He turned his gaze to the next Artifact.
It was a thumb-sized glass bottle, like a perfume sample vial with its label torn off. There was a red arrow symbol near the opening.
...
[Flavor Storage Jar LV3]: Faith +1/hour.
Stores scents within the jar and uses them for identification.
...
Unlike the [Identity Card], the [Flavor Storage Jar]’s description was very vague.
Luh Yao had to experiment to verify its function.
After tinkering with it for over an hour, he came to a preliminary conclusion: the thing was a dog in the form of a glass bottle, capable of identifying people by scent.
The [Flavor Storage Jar] could collect all sorts of scents.
By pointing the arrow on the bottle’s opening at someone from close range, it could collect their exclusive scent. Upon encountering the same person again, the contents of the bottle would react with a change in color—though this was limited to living beings.
With both the [Identity Card] and the [Flavor Storage Jar] in his possession, Lin Zecheng’s investigations must have been incredibly convenient.
Luh Yao tossed both Artifacts into the Star Ring behind him.
Suddenly, a police siren wailed on the street.
Luh Yao looked out the window.
A police car, its roof lights flashing, turned into the parking alley.
Two uniformed police officers got out from either side of the car. After a brief search, they found someone inside a white car. The person seemed to be trapped and was only able to get out with the officers’ help.
Luh Yao’s eyesight was excellent now, and he recognized at a glance that the person being helped by the police was Boss Huang, Huang Liaoxin.
That white car was Boss Huang’s BMW X5.
Luh Yao scratched his head.
’I was so preoccupied with the God Simulator and the [Whistleblower] that I completely forgot about him.’
’Lin Zecheng wasn’t tailing me, but Boss Huang. He deliberately split his forces, sending his Apostle to control Boss Huang and interrogate him about the key.’
’Come to think of it, this was all a misunderstanding.’
’It basically had nothing to do with me.’
Because he had made enemies of Prayer God and the [Whistleblower], he had taken preemptive measures for self-preservation and emergency avoidance.
’On the other hand, there was something not quite right about the key Jia Xiaokai had.’
Luh Yao had indeed gotten a key from the East Sea Clan, but it did not lead to the [Golden Field]. Instead, it was used to open the [Black Abyss].
He smelled a conspiracy.
’It seems the members of the [Whistleblower] group are also scheming against each other.’
’Whatever.’
’Anyway, I’m a solo player focused on grinding. I’m not leaving the newbie zone to deal with them.’
’If you’ve got the guts, come on in, and we’ll see if I don’t mess you up.’
It was eight o’clock at night by the time the police had completely withdrawn from the parking alley.
Only after confirming the area was safe and that no one was around did Luh Yao have Isabel ride the [Ghost White Horse] over to conduct further verification.
Not everything Lin Zecheng had said was a lie, but not all of it was necessarily true, either. So, he needed to verify the story with the other party involved.
This party, of course, was the Apostle who had been instantly killed by the Blood Knight’s single strike.
Luh Yao only knew his name was Sirut.
He looked toward the corner of the room.
The Armored Knight stood in the corner like a stone statue. Without a command, it remained perfectly still.
As for the Blood Knight, Luh Yao had only one assessment.
Professional!
