Chapter 81 - 76: Method Acting
Fu Chenggang’s eyelid was twitching badly.
He didn’t know why. Perhaps it was muscle fatigue from staying up late, or maybe he’d been irritated by some perfume.
Fu Chenggang hated perfume.
But in this world, there was too much perfume.
There was perfume on the bus, perfume in the subway, perfume in the elevator, perfume on the sidewalk. Even the restroom had that annoying smell...
There’s often no rhyme or reason to what a person likes or dislikes.
Living in a world so full of different scents meant there were many things you couldn’t do anything about and just had to endure. The more you resisted something, the more you seemed to run into it.
Like perfume.
Or work.
"Sir, would you like to try our newest coffee?" The promoter smiled sweetly, holding out small paper cups of coffee. A scent of cheap perfume wafted from her.
Fu Chenggang raised a hand. "No, thank you."
Before leaving, he glanced up.
A security camera was right above him, more than enough to capture his face. ’They should know I’m in this mall soon.’
’Then, the Committee will send people over.’
’According to procedure, I’ll be arrested on suspicion of endangering public safety, taken to a detention cell, and then interrogated for twenty-four hours.’
’They won’t get any evidence or a confession because there are no witnesses and no proof.’
’According to the relevant regulations, the most the Committee can do is fine me, detain me for three to five days, and warn me not to disrupt the normal Order of ordinary people’s lives.’
’All I did was use the Identity Card to meet a few women and look up some private information. That’s it.’
’Meanwhile, a kidnapping will take place in this city—starting quietly and ending quietly.’
’It will have nothing to do with Fu Chenggang. The security cameras will be the best proof of that.’
’Convictions require evidence.’
Fu Chenggang had no doubt about the outcome of his plan.
’This was the benefit of his "police officer" identity.’
An identity is a signifier, letting others understand your behavior at a glance. An identity is also a shackle, keeping you from overstepping the boundaries it defines.
In other words, it was a rule.
Of course, one could also abandon the rules entirely. That would bring unfettered freedom, the ability to do whatever one pleased.
However, that would mean making an enemy of everyone who played by the rules, and the outcome was rarely good.
Fu Chenggang admired the courage of those who defied the rules, but he himself remained within their bounds.
Or rather, he stood on the stronger side.
It is always the strong who make the rules.
Fu Chenggang waited quietly.
He knew that before long, people from the Committee would show up and take him away. He was even composing a lame joke to use during his conversation with them.
After all, Officer Fu Chenggang was a man who liked to tell lame jokes.
At least, that’s what was written on his Identity Card.
His eyelid was still twitching, interrupting his train of thought.
Fu Chenggang suddenly sensed danger.
’Something’s targeting me, and it doesn’t feel like the Committee.’ For some reason, he suddenly couldn’t sense Sirut’s flame.
’This isn’t good.’
Fu Chenggang hesitated.
’This wasn’t part of the plan.’
Before he could decide which backup plan to use, something pressed against his lower back.
"Don’t move."
A girl’s voice came from behind him. "If you don’t want to end up like your Apostle, then do as you’re told."
Fu Chenggang froze.
An unfamiliar scent, a light fragrance that reeked of danger.
It was a finger pressed against his back, but that finger felt as dangerous as the barrel of a gun.
He was finally certain: Sirut’s flame had been completely extinguished.
’He’s been killed.’
’A Level-14 Apostle, eliminated in an instant.’
’Someone of that caliber...’
’This is bad!’
’Huang Liaoxin was a decoy. I fell for it!’
Fu Chenggang didn’t dare to dwell on it.
His heart hammered in his chest, his palms grew sweaty, and his mouth felt dry.
"Walk forward,"
the person behind him said.
Fu Chenggang obediently did as she said.
At this point, he knew there was no point in resisting.
After being led to a utility closet in the mall restroom, Fu Chenggang was suddenly enveloped in a viscous yellow liquid, and he immediately lost consciousness.
...
When he woke up again, Fu Chenggang found himself in an abandoned car.
It was in a parking alley.
His heart sank.
’So they’d been watching my every move.’
A young girl was sitting next to him.
She looked to be about twenty, wearing sunglasses and an oversized gray hoodie. Long green hair spilled out from under her baseball cap.
"You’re awake?" she said.
Fu Chenggang struggled to remain calm. "Who are you? What do you want from me?"
The girl said, "Tell me everything you know. Stick to the point. I’m in a hurry."
He was in no position to argue.
Fu Chenggang collected his thoughts. His cheek twitched, and a flicker of struggle crossed his eyes. "My name is... Lin Zecheng. I’m from Jiangnan City."
"In the Divine Hall of the Gods, my name is the Lamp God. I’m a Subordinate God of the Whistleblower."
"I recently received an order to find a key that was hidden by the Prayer God Jia Xiaokai. He has since been imprisoned by the Committee, and all contact with him has been lost."
"Jia Xiaokai is one of the Whistleblower’s Subordinate Gods. He hid the key to the Golden Field, but no one knows where."
He continued, "The Whistleblower suspects Jia Xiaokai hid the key in the High Realm Dimension—that is, somewhere here. So I was sent to investigate."
"I spent a considerable amount of time investigating and found that Jia Xiaokai has a cousin, Huang Liaoxin, who was also his business partner. They were once very close, and Huang Liaoxin was the person Jia Xiaokai trusted most."
"So I investigated Huang Liaoxin. I didn’t find any clues at his home, nor at his company..."
"Later, his daughter returned to the country, so I made contact with her, as well as his company’s employees. Most of these employees are related to Huang Liaoxin in some way, so in theory, they’re all suspects..."
"As a detective, I couldn’t overlook any possible leads."
The girl slowly turned her head to face him.
Lin Zecheng’s expression stiffened, and a muscle in his face twitched. "Sorry... it’s a side effect of the Identity Card. Once you use an identity, it’s easy to get too immersed in the role."
Realizing he was getting bogged down in tedious detail, a Star Ring manifested behind Lin Zecheng. A white card covered in text flew out of it.
He wiped his finger across the card, and its surface turned blank white again.
As the words on the card vanished, Lin Zecheng’s entire aura changed abruptly.
His body suddenly hunched over, and his eyes became timid—a stark contrast to the sharp-eyed, righteous persona he had projected just moments before.
"Continue," she said.
"Y-yes."
Lin Zecheng fidgeted, unsure what to do with his hands. He hastily picked up where he left off. "I tracked Huang Liaoxin and had Sirut—my Apostle—take control of him to ask about the key’s location."
"And the next thing I knew, I was here..."
Finally, the girl said, "Hand over the Artifacts."
The Star Ring reappeared behind Lin Zecheng, and a small glass bottle flew out of it.
He obediently handed both treasures over to her.
The girl pushed the door open and got out.
Not long after, another person appeared outside the car window: a young woman in a plaid overshirt and a camel-colored flat cap.
"I’m Prosecutor Songx Shiyi of the Committee."
Her voice was crisp and clear. "Please come with me."
Lin Zecheng let out a long breath and wiped the sweat from his forehead. The tension drained from his muscles.
’The Committee is here. I’m safe now.’
He was beginning to understand Jia Xiaokai.
’Sometimes, being locked up by the Committee isn’t necessarily a bad thing.’
