Chapter 80 - 75: Luckily, I Was 1 Step Ahead
You can’t keep a secret when people are involved, so word of the break-in spread through the company like wildfire. Everyone was talking about it, speculating on who the inside man was and why Boss Huang hadn’t called the police.
But none of this had anything to do with Luh Yao.
He continued to clock in and out as usual. As long as his paycheck came on time, nothing else mattered.
After work that day, Boss Huang called out to Luh Yao and told him to get in his car.
Boss Huang drove his BMW X5 out of the company’s underground parking garage and onto the overpass.
"Xiaolu, how have I been treating you?"
The moment his boss spoke, Luh Yao had a bad feeling.
’This means he has a difficult task for me.’
"Actually... Boss, I’d like to ask for some time off."
Luh Yao went on the offensive as a form of defense. "My parents have always wanted me to get married soon, and they’ve been pushing me to go on blind dates for a long time now."
"My parents said if I don’t go, they’ll make me go back to our hometown and get a temp job."
Boss Huang was taken aback.
He finally sighed. "Young man, you’re right to consider your family. If only Amy listened to her parents like you do... How many days do you need?"
Luh Yao looked out the window.
Ever since leaving the office, he’d had a strong feeling that someone was secretly watching him.
Through the rearview mirror, Luh Yao clearly saw a white Ford Mondeo. The car had been following them the entire time.
The driver was a man in sunglasses.
The population growth in the simulator had brought him physical enhancements, allowing Luh Yao to see clearly that the man in the sunglasses was Fu Chenggang.
’I’m being followed by Fu Chenggang.’
’Where did I slip up?’
’Or was I his target from the very beginning?’
Luh Yao couldn’t be sure.
But he knew he had to find a way to deal with Fu Chenggang.
The top priority now was to get home and summon help using the simulator.
"General Manager Huang, I’d like to start my leave tomorrow, for three days."
Luh Yao’s request surprised Boss Huang a little.
But he nodded anyway. "Alright. Go have a good time with your blind dates. I’ll keep an eye out for any suitable girls for you, too. You should get some rest; you’ve been busy lately."
Luh Yao offered some polite words, but his eyes kept darting to the rearview mirror.
Fu Chenggang was on them like a bulldog, tailing the BMW relentlessly.
Luh Yao claimed to be feeling a little unwell and had Boss Huang drop him off just outside his residential complex.
...
The moment he was back in his apartment, Luh Yao deadbolted the door. He raced to his computer, opened the Divine Hall interface, and deftly summoned Isabel.
Still not feeling safe enough, he also summoned the Blood Knight, Necied, into the real world.
Necied nearly crushed the computer desk when he materialized, but Luh Yao couldn’t be bothered with that right now.
"Stay on alert."
"Yes, Lord God."
Necied replied, his voice deep and booming from within his helmet.
In the Pixel World, the Blood Knight was just a tiny figure, but in the real world, his true form was revealed. He stood around two meters tall, exuding a naturally oppressive aura.
Necied was clad in a suit of black armor covered in scratches. The material of the armor seemed to be something between rock and metal, and it gave off a faint gleam under the incandescent light. He was encased completely in the black plate, and on his back, he carried an entirely dark red two-handed sword.
Its cross-shaped hilt and guard were long and slender, which made the blade itself look even wider and heavier.
Luh Yao glanced over and saw that the greatsword was housed in a sheath integrated into the knight’s backplate, held securely in place.
Fully armed, Necied wore the White Bone Ram Horn Helmet. The [Withered Crown] on his head radiated a cold, sinister aura, and a deep, restrained demonic power lurked within his pitch-black eye sockets.
The Blood Knight’s neck was completely encased in a scale armor gorget, from which hung the necklace-like [Skinner’s Statue]. A pair of old, black-and-gray scissors—the [Taunting Scissors]—was tucked into the faulds at his waist.
Luh Yao searched for a moment before noticing that the [Head of Greed] was stuck to the two-handed sword.
It looked like a splash of milky-white paint, with thin tentacles extending from it to wrap around the joint where the guard met the blade, forming a grotesque, pistil-like pattern.
The Blood Knight’s appearance was a little too conspicuous.
Luh Yao commanded, "Take off your armor."
"Lord God, the armor is me. I am the armor," the Blood Knight replied, his voice devoid of emotion.
Realization dawned on Luh Yao.
’So the armor is its real body.’
’That makes sense.’
The Blood Knight was a special life-form created by the [Whistleblower] to begin with.
Luh Yao assigned the [Ghost White Horse] to the Blood Knight. With its High-Level Disguise ability, he wasn’t worried about Necied being easily discovered.
Isabel, who was keeping watch by the window, said, "My lord, I’ve spotted a suspected Demon Apostle."
Luh Yao’s heart clenched.
He looked in the direction Isabel indicated and saw Fu Chenggang standing on the street outside.
Fu Chenggang was wearing a brown flat cap. He lit a cigarette and seemed to be idly watching the pedestrians. Beside him stood another man wearing a face mask.
The masked man wore a dark blue flight jacket and a knit cap, and he had a similar build to Fu Chenggang. He kept coughing, however, and didn’t seem to be in good health.
The Demon Apostle Isabel had mentioned was the masked man.
"Can you gauge his strength?" Luh Yao asked.
"His Fire of Faith is very weak, but that could be a disguise to feign weakness." Isabel chose her words carefully. "We won’t know for sure until we engage him."
Luh Yao thought that made sense.
After waiting for a bit, Fu Chenggang and the Apostle split up. The masked man headed toward a parking alley behind the building, while Fu Chenggang walked off in the other direction.
’Good thing I summoned the Blood Knight,’ Luh Yao thought. ’I’m not short-handed.’
He had Isabel first apply the [Forest Sword] buff to the Blood Knight, then told her to follow Fu Chenggang and await further orders.
By using the "eyes" Isabel left behind, Luh Yao could monitor Fu Chenggang’s situation in real time.
With the Blood Knight guarding the apartment, his safety was guaranteed.
Through the magical eyeball, Luh Yao saw that Fu Chenggang was extremely cautious. He kept taking detours, passing through a wet market, entering a mall and wandering around two floors before exiting, making it impossible to discern his true objective.
A thought flashed through Luh Yao’s mind: ’Is he trying to create an alibi?’
The real target probably wasn’t Fu Chenggang, but the masked man.
Luh Yao grabbed the telescope and looked out the window.
By now, the sky had grown dark.
In the parking alley, the masked man stood under a streetlight. His body trembled slightly as he continued to cough.
Luh Yao made a snap decision. "Necied, take out that Apostle. Use the white horse to conceal your movements. Don’t be seen."
"Yes, Lord God."
The Blood Knight’s heavy, towering form leaped off the balcony. In midair, a white steed materialized beneath him, catching him smoothly.
The Ghost White Horse became a phantom on the street, galloping silently through the night. The surrounding pedestrians showed no reaction; no one noticed the Knight charging past on his steed.
The masked man seemed to sense something. He raised his head and looked toward the mouth of the alley.
As he turned his head to look, it suddenly flew off his shoulders.
His headless body remained standing there for a moment, stunned.
His body then slumped to the ground as if it were melting, leaving behind a pile of clothes and a blurry black shadow.
Luh Yao watched and wiped away a cold sweat.
’Good thing I was one step ahead.’
