Chapter 38 – You Call That a Little
As Ethan spoke, his wrist turned, and he added a little more force.
The burly man's body twisted immediately. To reduce the pain, his knees bent out of his control.
In the end, both knees hit the floor.
Kneeling in front of Ethan, the man's forehead broke out in cold sweat. Still, he gritted his teeth and did not cry out.
"I misunderstood. I apologize. I'm sorry."
His voice carried humiliation, but even more urgency. "Mr. Montgomery's safety comes first. Please let go."
Seeing that the man had not acted with deliberate malice and had already apologized, Ethan slowly released his hand.
The burly man felt as if he had been pardoned. He quickly climbed up and took the old man from Ethan's arms.
As he did, the way he looked at Ethan still carried deep caution.
The man considered himself experienced. He had seen countless people.
But this young man in his twenties was someone he could not see through.
Whether it was the casual way Ethan had caught his full-force punch or the powerful aura radiating from him now, neither should belong to someone of this age.
But he had no time to care about that.
The old man in his arms was growing paler, and his breathing was becoming weaker.
The burly man's face changed. He looked around and shouted, "Doctor! Is there a doctor here? Someone help!"
His voice echoed through the lobby and drew many passersby to stop and watch.
But after shouting for a long time, more and more people gathered, yet not a single doctor appeared.
Ethan's gaze fell on the old man.
His x-ray vision opened, piercing through flesh and reaching the organs beneath.
He could clearly see the old man's heartbeat slowing at a visible rate.
Ethan sighed.
Since he had encountered this, it counted as fate.
Besides, even unconscious, this old man carried a presence that proved he was no ordinary person.
Helping him now might create a useful connection.
That might come in handy one day.
Thinking of that, Ethan stepped forward.
"Hey, what are you doing?"
Vivian grabbed his arm and gently pulled him back.
"Saving him," Ethan said. "What else?"
"Saving him? That's a doctor's job. Don't tell me you know medicine too."
Vivian said it half jokingly.
Ethan smiled faintly. "I do know a little."
"We'll talk later. I need to save him first."
After saying that, Ethan removed Vivian's hand and walked toward the old man.
The old man's current condition was much more dangerous than it looked. Saying his life hung by a thread would not be an exaggeration.
One foot in death's door?
No.
More accurately, only the heel was still outside.
His heartbeat was weakening. Blood supply was nearly stopping. Multiple organs were already showing signs of ischemia.
If this dragged on, even a god would have trouble saving him.
The burly man had also sensed that something was wrong. He touched the old man's forehead and found it icy cold.
Then he grabbed the old man's wrist and tried to feel his pulse.
There was nothing.
"No pulse! Mr. Montgomery! Mr. Montgomery!"
Other than shouting and trying to keep the old man conscious, the burly man had no idea what else he could do.
At that moment, a hand landed on his shoulder.
"Enough. Stop howling like a ghost. Move."
Before the burly man could react, Ethan reached into his clothes and took out an exquisite wooden box.
The box was about the width of a folding fan. It was entirely black, with ancient cloud patterns carved into the surface. One glance showed that it was not ordinary.
This was another of the many rewards from the Check-In System.
The Thirteen Dawn Needles.
Combined with Ethan's god-level medical skill, this needle technique could produce effects ordinary people could hardly imagine.
Bringing the dead back to life?
That was only its most basic ability.
Ethan opened the box. Inside lay thirteen silver needles, arranged neatly. Each needle was as fine as a strand of hair.
Seeing the needles, the burly man asked, "You... you know medicine?"
Ethan glanced at him, his tone impatient.
"If you keep wasting time, in ten seconds, even an immortal won't save him."
The burly man's body shook. He immediately stepped aside and did not dare say another word.
Ethan ignored him.
With a sweep of his hand, thirteen silver needles turned into thirteen streaks of light.
From head to foot, the movement was completed in one breath.
By the time the onlookers reacted, all thirteen Dawn Needles had already entered the correct points with perfect accuracy.
The burly man knelt beside them, staring with his mouth open wide enough to fit his whole fist.
He did not understand medicine.
But even without understanding, he could tell that this technique was extraordinary.
Vivian stood not far away, her beautiful eyes wide.
She began to believe Ethan had not been showing off or joking.
He really knew medicine.
The surrounding onlookers, however, did not think the same.
Whispers rose from the crowd.
"It looks impressive..."
A middle-aged man rubbed his chin, doubtful. "But do you think the old man can really survive?"
An auntie nearby shook her head with certainty. "I doubt it. Don't you know? Medical skill and hairline are inversely related. Look at his hair. So thick. How good could his medical skill be? At most, he's an intern."
"Exactly. I've heard the old masters are all bald. The balder, the better."
"Young people are too impulsive. How can he mess around with something like this? If something happens, he'll lose everything in compensation."
The questioning grew louder and harsher.
"You people..."
Vivian frowned and was about to speak in Ethan's defense.
"Cough!"
A violent cough suddenly rang out.
The old man sat upright, his eyes snapping open.
Then, clutching his chest, he spat out a mouthful of black blood onto the floor.
The sight was shocking.
The crowd instantly fell silent.
Everyone stared in disbelief.
The man they had just been certain was doomed was now sitting there, gasping heavily for breath.
His face was still pale, but it no longer looked bloodless as before. Color was slowly returning.
His eyes also regained focus, no longer dull and gray.
Those who had judged medical skill by hairline a moment ago felt as if invisible slaps had landed across their faces.
"He really knows medicine! And the kind that can bring someone back from death!"
Vivian witnessed the scene, and waves surged in her heart.
She knew she had picked up a treasure.
She had personally heard the burly man say the old man had no pulse.
She really wanted to complain to Ethan.
You call this knowing a little medicine?
More like a whole universe of it.
On the old man's side, after taking several breaths and recovering slightly, he grabbed Ethan's wrist.
"Young man..."
His voice was hoarse, but strength was slowly returning to it. "Thank you."
Ethan smiled calmly and patted the back of his hand.
"Sir, you just woke up. Don't get too emotional. Keep your mind calm."
The old man still did not let go of his hand.
"Although I was unconscious, I knew what happened outside."
"That reckless fool attacked you because of a misunderstanding and nearly caused a disaster. Not only did you not hold a grudge, but you still saved this old life of mine."
As he spoke, he glared angrily at the burly man.
The burly man, knowing he was in the wrong, looked away and scratched his head awkwardly.
"I will remember this kindness," the old man said, turning his gaze back to Ethan with absolute seriousness.
He looked directly at Ethan and introduced himself.
"My name is Malcolm Montgomery."
"In the future, if you need anything, come to the Montgomery family. As long as I can solve it, even if I must climb a mountain of blades or cross a sea of fire, I will not refuse."
"All right. I will."
Ethan agreed casually.
This was exactly what he had been waiting for.
As for the name, it did not mean much to him.
"Malcolm Montgomery..."
Not far away, Vivian lowered her head and frowned, trying hard to remember.
Two or three seconds later, she seemed to think of something. She suddenly raised her head, shock written all over her face.
