Killer Maid’s Pride

The Feral Icebreaker

Nadia slowly lowered the heavy wood-splitting axe, the tension in her toned, athletic shoulders easing just a fraction. She didn't put the weapon away entirely, keeping her powerful hands wrapped firmly around the polished ash handle. Her round, fuzzy bear ears flicked back and forth, filtering the sound of the pouring rain against the courtyard cobblestones.

Her deep amber eyes narrowed as she studied the group. They didn't look like a standard mercenary vanguard, and they certainly didn't look like the city watch.

"You smell... different," Nadia murmured, her athletic frame remaining perfectly balanced in the doorway.

As a bear-kin, her olfactory senses were incredibly acute. She could smell the cheap rum and stagnant sea salt on the unconscious thugs pooling in the mud. But from Elara, she caught a scent that completely defied the pristine white lace of her apron. Beneath the clean, sharp aroma of lavender wax and freshly pressed linen, there was a faint, chilling undercurrent of cold iron, chemical sanitizers, and an absolute, terrifying lack of adrenaline.

"Definitely not just a maid," Nadia added, her eyes drifting over Elara’s unblinking, serene expression. "No ordinary domestic worker moves with that kind of velocity. But whatever your ledger is, you just kept Scurlock’s hooks off my doorstep. For that, the sanctuary owes you."

The old, blind human priest stepped forward, his milky-white eyes tracking the sound of Nadia's voice. He raised a trembling hand, offering a soft blessing into the rain. "The Lord works in mysterious ways, Nadia. If these travelers require shelter from the gale, the old belfry quarters are dry. We have little bread, but the hearth is warm."

"Thank you, Father," Elara replied, her voice a cool, pleasant melody that seemed to completely ignore the freezing wind. She smoothed down her starched apron. "The pack will begin the immediate mobilization of the upper quarters. Mochi, ensure the perimeter lines are mapped. Bridget, secure the heavy threshold."

---

The upper belfry quarters of the stone church were drafty, the stone walls covered in patches of dry moss and water-stained plaster. But compared to the flooded streets below, the large room was a paradise. A massive, circular hearth in the center crackled with a low wood fire, casting long, amber shadows across the timber rafters.

While Nadia and the old priest remained downstairs to secure the main sanctuary doors, the pack quickly began to unpack their gear. And true to their domestic habits, the standard uniform around the safehouse immediately dropped down to the bare minimum to dry out their soaked clothing.

Seline uncoiled herself from Elara’s torso, stretching her long, emerald-scaled tail across the warm stone floor. She shed her wet travel cloak, leaving her standing in her sheer silk wrap, her golden eyes tracking the flickering flames. Mochi sat on a dry wooden crate, aggressively grooming her damp feline forearms, her fluffy cat ears twitching in irritation while clad only in her delicate, white lace g-string. Fen unbuttoned her linen shirt entirely, letting the warmth of the fire hit her toned midriff and the broad shoulders that carried Elara’s strength multiplier.

It didn't take long for the residents of the orphanage to notice the new arrivals.

The heavy wooden door connecting the belfry stairs creaked open by a mere three inches. Three pairs of wide, glowing beastkin eyes peeked through the gap. They were juvenile cat-kin and fox-kin cubs, their fur ragged and their simple burlap tunics stained with grease from the docks.

They didn't look at Elara. They didn't look at Bridget. To the frightened children, the tall humans looked intimidating, smelling of iron and authority. Instead, their eyes locked directly onto their fellow beastkin.

Mochi paused her grooming, her feline ears snapping forward as she noticed the small cubs trembling in the doorway. Her tail gave a soft, comforting flick against the wooden crate.

"Well, don't just stand out there in the draft," Mochi purred softly, her sharp voice softening into a rare, gentle tone. "The fire is warm. Come here."

The smallest cat-kin cub, a silver-furred boy with a notched ear, took a hesitant step into the room. He sniffed the air, catching the distinct, reassuring scent of a high-tier feline protector. Within minutes, the ice was completely broken. The three cubs scrambled across the stone floor, completely ignoring the half-naked state of the pack as they huddled close to Mochi and Lyra, seeking the comforting warmth of their fur.

By the time the fire had settled into a steady, roaring heat, two more older juvenile beastkin had slipped up the stairs, drawn by the quiet, low murmuring of the pack. They sat in a tight circle on the dry stone floor, with Fen and Seline offering them pieces of dried travel jerky from the penthouse rations.

The presence of fellow high-tier beastkin had completely melted the children's fear, and the dire reality of Brackish Bay began to spill out of them.

"Scurlock’s men are everywhere now," the older fox-kin boy muttered, his long red ears drooping as he clutched his knees. "They aren't just taking cargo from the ships anymore. They've been raiding the lower docks every night. Anyone who can't pay the harbor tax gets dragged down to the iron holding pens near the black-market auction house."

"They took Kael’s older sister last week," the silver cat-kin cub whispered, his small claws digging into Mochi’s silk shorts. "Nadia tried to stop them with her axe, but there were too many. They have magical lookout gulls in the sky. If anyone tries to leave the port by the western road, the gulls scream, and the privateers hunt them down with hounds."

"The whole town is rotting," the fox-kin boy added, his eyes wide with a heavy, uncharacteristic weight for someone so young. "The dream-lotus dens are expanding into the residential alleys. The sailors get drunk, burn the lotus, and then they come looking for fresh labor to clean the bilge tanks on The Black Leviathan. We can't even go down to the piers to fish for food anymore without a guard catching us."

Elara stood near the arched window of the belfry, her back to the fire, her pristine uniform silhouetted against the dark, rain-slicked harbor below. Her silver-lashed eyes tracked the distant, glowing lanterns of Captain Scurlock’s massive flagship permanently anchored in the center of the bay.

She didn't speak. She didn't reveal her assassin ledger to the children.

But from the shadow of the hearth, Hops was watching the older juvenile beastkin intently. Her long rabbit ears were perfectly erect, her mind already tracking how easily these small, invisible street urchins could navigate the narrow timber scaffolding of the port without drawing the attention of the lookout gulls. They weren't scouts yet—they were just frightened orphans. But the potential for a localized intelligence network was sitting right in front of them.

Elara idly adjusted the lace trim of her sleeves, her voice a cool, deadpan melody that cut through the children's quiet sniffling.

"The accumulation of structural filth in this harbor is thoroughly unacceptable," Elara murmured, turning back to the room. "The cleaning schedule for Brackish Bay begins at dawn. Pack your gear, girls, we have a lot of sanitizing to do."
