Chapter 49: Weighing the Mission’s Pros and Cons
I fell silent for quite a while, not reacting immediately, simply letting those words echo inside my mind, repeating them slowly to make sure I truly understood the meaning behind each sentence that sounded almost too neat and logical.
The response came with such calmness, so structured, that it felt… too reasonable for something that had always been rigid and simple before.
This system was never this clear, never this quick in providing logical explanations, and it certainly had never sounded like it was… analyzing risks in such depth.
“What exactly happened to you…?” I whispered softly, barely audible even to myself, as a faint sense of unease began to creep into my chest, spreading slowly like a widening shadow. “You’ve really changed.”
But my thoughts couldn’t linger there for long. The information I had just received was far more important—and far more dangerous.
The mission target consisted of two vampires. One of them possessed strength equal to mine, while the other… was even slightly stronger. That meant this was not just an ordinary fight.
This was the kind of situation where even the smallest mistake could prove fatal, where every decision had to be calculated carefully without any room for hesitation.
I clenched my hand reflexively, my fingers tightening without me realizing it, while the muscles in my arm tensed slightly, as if my body itself was preparing for something that hadn’t even truly begun yet.
My pulse became more distinct, beating slowly yet heavily, in rhythm with the awareness that was beginning to take shape inside my mind.
“Wait…” My breath hitched for a moment, my chest tightening slightly—not from exhaustion, but from the realization forming clearly, impossible to ignore. “Then… doesn’t that mean this mission… is extremely dangerous?”
That conclusion didn’t come gradually or through a long process—it appeared instantly, cold, sharp, and unmistakably clear, as if it had been forcibly pulled from the deepest part of my mind without leaving even the slightest room for denial.
There was no pause to process it, no chance to reject it. Everything felt instant… and precisely because of that, my thoughts wavered slightly, if only for a fleeting moment that was almost imperceptible. Should I accept this mission?
The question immediately began spinning in my head without end, repeating like an echo trapped within a narrow, endless space.
It kept returning, crashing against my awareness again and again, offering no easy answer—let alone a comfortable one. Something inside me reacted to that question.
A strong, instinctive urge—something born from my survival instincts—was screaming soundlessly, telling me to retreat, to get as far away from this situation as possible.
That warning felt real, like an alarm that wouldn’t stop ringing, reminding me that whatever awaited me ahead was not something to be taken lightly.
Something that could kill me at any moment, without warning, without giving me any chance to react. Yet on the other hand… the reward for this mission was simply insane.
Even as I fully realized the risk, that the worst possible outcome was death, I still couldn’t just walk away.
There was something holding me back, something that kept pulling my attention in the same direction, making me reconsider it over and over again even as logic tried to reject it.
The reward included five attribute stat upgrades below D level, three spider robots, and an upgrade to the Spider-Man transformation suit.
I let out a slow breath as I thought about it again, allowing those words to settle for a moment in my mind.
This wasn’t just an ordinary reward—it was a massive leap in my power, something that wouldn’t come twice, something that even under normal circumstances would be nearly impossible to obtain so easily.
Even if I tried to convince myself to ignore this mission, to choose the safer path and back away… my thoughts always returned to the same thing.
My mind kept going back to those numbers, to that increase, to an opportunity far too great to simply ignore, and in the end, one reality remained unavoidable—I could die because of this.
“Damn…” I clicked my tongue softly, the small sound cutting sharper in the silence of the night, irritation mixed with an uneasiness I couldn’t quite explain slowly filling my chest, pressing from within like something building up with no way out. “You’re always like this, aren’t you… Spider-Man System?”
Always the same—constantly giving me choices that felt like traps, choices that on the surface looked like great opportunities… but in reality pushed me to the edge, forcing me to stand on a dangerous boundary.
As if this system was deliberately testing me, wanting to see whether I would hesitate and step back… or move forward without thinking, or perhaps even worse—jump without hesitation, without knowing what was waiting below.
I took a deep breath, slow and steady, the cold night air filling my lungs, sharp as it passed through my throat, yet gradually helping to calm my unsteady heartbeat.
I held it for a moment, then exhaled slowly, trying to suppress the restlessness that had been continuously disturbing my thoughts.
Alright… If this really was a dangerous world, and if this was a world filled with vampires, mutants, and all kinds of threats lurking behind the darkness, waiting for the right moment to strike without mercy… then I couldn’t keep avoiding it like this, not anymore if I wanted to survive.
“This world might truly be cursed…” I muttered quietly, my voice low and heavy, almost drowned out by the sound of the night wind brushing past the tall buildings that stood still and rigid, like silent witnesses to everything happening below. “Maybe… I’m cursed too, just for being here.”
I slowly lifted my head, letting my gaze pierce through the darkness, my eyes locking onto a distant rooftop—where those two figures still stood in the shadows, completely unmoving, like statues.
They were watching Blade’s fight without interfering, as if they were only waiting for something that hadn’t happened yet, waiting for the right moment, or perhaps… waiting for something far more dangerous than just a chance to step in.
“But who cares?” My tone shifted, becoming firmer and colder, the doubt that had lingered before now gradually fading without a trace, replaced by a resolve that was beginning to harden within me. “Even if the entire universe tries to curse me…”
My fingers clenched tighter, my joints stiffening with a faint ache, while the muscles in my arms tensed, holding back the pressure slowly building inside my body, thin veins faintly visible beneath my gloves, pulsing as if restraining something on the verge of bursting out of control.
“I’ll curse this world back… in my own way—by solving every problem I come across,” I said quietly, my voice low yet filled with weight, as if those words were not merely spoken, but a vow deeply rooted within me, something that could never be taken back.
With that single decision, the doubt that had once clouded my mind gradually crumbled away without a trace, replaced by a much sharper focus and a determination that now felt solid, no longer wavering in the slightest, even with the shadow of danger still clearly looming ahead.
The chaotic feeling from before shifted into something far more stable and directed, like something that had finally found its shape, guiding every step I took toward a decision I could no longer avoid.
