Chapter 49 49: Song of the Soul
Adjusting my suit for "going out among people," I glanced at the time again. Then at the puffing "robot" answering to the name Iida. There were only three minutes left until the party started, but half of the U.A. students invited to the party still hadn't arrived. Punctuality. But for the ladies, some leniency could be allowed. The fairer sex. That said it all.
I adjusted my suit again, or rather the sleeves under which the bandages were hidden. Perhaps this was an unnecessary element for a party outfit, but I had grown too accustomed to them. After all, I didn't avoid fights with villains; I actively sought them out. And they didn't always end well for me. Cuts, broken bones, bruises, burns. My Quirk passively enhanced my body, but it couldn't heal me in a few minutes. So I had to wear closed clothing to hide my bandaged wounds. And after training with "Hardening," which allowed me to manipulate "hardened" objects (even with their own limitations), bandages had become a permanent fixture in my wardrobe.
I looked over the Class 1A students again. The "robot," the "two tone," the two waiters. Seriously? The last two had come in what they had been wearing at the cafe where they worked today. I wouldn't say anything about the state of their clothes after a full day's work, but if any of the party guests mistook them for actual waiters tonight, I wouldn't be able to hold back my laughter.
Chuckling at the thought, I relaxed, closed my eyes, and remembered the last two days. The tension that had been building inside me for years was easing. This was probably what I had been missing in recent months. A simple trip to see a friend, away from clashes with heroes and villains, away from U.A. and the murky League of Villains and the mysterious Haijima. I was grateful to Melissa for this opportunity to take a "breather," to simply relax like an ordinary boy. She, Ayame, Hana, Mei, and Midoriya were the only things that allowed me to enjoy life as Ken Hoshino.
"I'm here. Sorry I'm late!"
I looked at Izuku, who had just arrived and was immediately being lectured by the "robot class rep." Soon, three of his female classmates arrived, whose beauty was hard not to notice. The two waiters pointed it out, and their exclamations made me want to cover my face with my hand. Why were they the idiots, yet I felt awkward?
When the sound of the automatic doors opening echoed, I had to listen to the "robot's" complaints about the absent "hard headed" one and Butthurt. Then a familiar voice made me turn my head.
"You guys are still here? The party has already started."
She was beautiful. The moment she took off her glasses, used the magic of makeup, and dressed in a white and blue dress, instead of my cheerful friend, I saw a beautiful fairy from ancient forgotten tales. Losing my voice for a moment, I managed to express my admiration with difficulty.
"You look stunning, Melissa."
Her embarrassed, happy smile was my answer.
"I ISLAND SECURITY SYSTEM REPORTING! WE REGRET TO INFORM YOU THAT A POWERFUL EXPLOSION HAS OCCURRED ON THE ISLAND! A STATE OF EMERGENCY HAS BEEN DECLARED ON THE ISLAND! FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS AND EVERYTHING WILL BE FINE! PERSONNEL, PLEASE PROCEED TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE. PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE THE BUILDING. THE SECURITY SYSTEM IS…"
Together with the female voice, armored plates began to descend over the windows.
"…SWITCHING TO BUILDING PROTECTION MODE. I REPEAT, THE SECURITY SYSTEM IS…"

*Pov from the sidelines, two hours before the explosion announcement*
"Uwaaaaa. This is so boring!"
A man dressed like a Native American from the era of colonial conquest, but with a mask on his face, stretched out on the sofa near the entrance to the conference hall.
"Uncultured."
A hero with a rapier at his belt and unusual mustaches on his face grunted.
"I get paid to protect clients' asses, not for cultural behavior. I don't comment on your ass licking, you stupid mustache."
"Are you trying to start a duel, you Neanderthal?"
"Shut up, idiots."
A beautiful female voice expressed the general opinion of the other ten heroes in the room. The heroine with lilac hair, whose costume resembled a Japanese schoolgirl's uniform, continued to berate the two heroes.
"If we get a complaint from the board of directors because of you two, my Koeti sama will be very upset. And if he gets upset, I'll get upset. And if I get upset, your bones will be broken. Got it?"
"This woman."
The man with the hero name "Striking" rolled his eyes, stopping his argument with "Leaping Mustache." Although this heroine acted according to her hero name, "School Girl," that wouldn't stop her from beating him up with her legs. After all, he considered arguing with a woman in love who could break concrete with her kicks to be frankly stupid and dangerous. Her sudden love for her client was still the subject of various rumors, which was why the heroine herself had been out of sorts lately.
"I wonder, did she really fall for her employer? Or did she decide to secure her future? Hero work is not the safest, and she is not getting any younger. 'School Girl' is no longer a girl…"
Smiling at his own unintended pun, the man continued his thoughts.
"…and here is a member of the board of directors who directs billions in eternal greens. She'll shake her ass, spread her legs wider, and instead of running through dirty alleys after another psycho (inevitably with a pompous nickname like 'Cosmic Dominator' or 'World Destroyer'), she'll be promenading through a jewelry store to choose a necklace for a party like tonight's. Every woman's dream. And it's easier to believe that than pure love from such a beauty for a man fifteen years older."
Looking at the entrance doors of the conference hall, the hero stroked the hilt of his sword, which he never let go of.
"Sigh. I wish I could get back to America as soon as possible. I'll get my money and then I'll really party. I'll rent some girls for a few days and relax. But here, you can't drink or sleep with girls. Work is work. But why do they need us here if they have a security system like Tartarus? So many words about the best security system in the world, yet these moneybags are still afraid to go anywhere without a bodyguard behind them. Well, at least I hope the food will be good at tonight's party."
The opening doors interrupted the man's thoughts. But the person who opened them made all the heroes jump to their feet. Dressed in an aristocratic 19th century suit, a black haired man with pale skin threw the doors wide open with both hands.
"What the…"
Two bloody, grotesque hands ending in claws. Behind the man, half of whose face was hidden by a white mask, the heroes saw their employers. The bodies of the wealthy owners of I Island were arranged in different ways. The corpse of a middle aged blonde woman with a slashed face and severed hands sat at a table, staring at a man hanging from the ceiling by his own internal organs. Two men were frozen in a fight on the floor in a pool of blood. One leaned against a chair, a hole in his chest. The limbs of the others were scattered all over the floor.
"K-Koeti…"
"Bastard."
Leaping Mustache shouted, getting into a fighting stance for a strike.
The stranger opened his mouth.
Striking felt as if he was sinking to the bottom of the ocean. The words of an unknown, incomprehensible song struck his ears. The sounds of instruments intertwined with a woman's voice, bringing memories up from the depths of his consciousness.
The frozen body of Leaping Mustache fell to the floor without a head, torn off by a graceful movement of the stranger's hand.
"Dale, we need to break up."
A stylishly dressed brunette said to a man taking off his hero costume.
Two heroes and a platinum haired heroine stared in horror at their stomachs, which had been gutted by one careless circular claw strike.
"…You're a good guy, but I'm tired of this life. Always absent from your patrols, constantly risking not coming back, a salary barely enough to pay off your loans and fines for destroying buildings and roads…"
Grabbing his sword, the man with the hero name "Striking" stared blankly at the deaths of his colleagues.
"Harry, where are we going to eat today?"
A brunette asked coquettishly, hugging the arm of a richly dressed young man. The hero in a mask watching them from the roof clenched his sword tightly.
The last thing Dale Brown, known as the hero "Striking," felt as he looked at the stranger's raised hand was bitterness.
The sounds of the song faded.
The man dressed as a 19th century aristocrat approached the sobbing heroine with lilac hair who had fallen to her knees. Her tearful eyes stared in disbelief at Koeti Enfield's body hanging from the ceiling.
"You have a wonderful voice. Let me hear it, my love. So that it never falls silent within me."
Gently cupping the face of "School Girl" with his hands, the man looked with love at her tear stained face. The woman's scream that followed was drowned in a passionate kiss.
