Chapter 48 48 :Mind Games
[Izuku Midoriya Pov]
Midoriya looked with delight at the city surrounding him. Overwhelmed with curiosity, he regretted more than ever that he could not create clones of himself like one of U.A.'s teachers, Ectoplasm.
"That's the famous hero Godzilla! And that's the one punch hero, One Shot! The swift heroine, Ilya! Unbelievable…"
Constantly turning his head, the green haired boy listened with interest to Melissa's commentary and Ken's questions.
"…so you're saying many of the heroes here were invited by sponsors?"
"Yes. Quite a few people have arrived on the island for the I Expo. The entire board of directors of I Island will even be there to evaluate the results of the scientists' research."
"That's unusual. I thought they summarized the results before the new year."
"That surprised me too, but my father didn't say anything about it."
Feeling awkward from the excitement of seeing so many heroes from around the world, Izuku couldn't help but compare himself to his new acquaintance and his friend.
"Sigh. I look like a child next to them. But these are famous heroes!"
Looking again at his companions, he couldn't help but be amazed at the ease with which they communicated. Midoriya couldn't call himself experienced in communicating with other people. Before the academy, his only friends were Ken. But years of being an outcast and…
"You stupid, useless Deku. Go die! A Quirkless nobody like you can never become a hero!"
An explosion followed the words, and the pain echoed in his hands.
…a punching bag had made him more attentive to his surroundings. To notice the moods of his classmates, their glances, their possible actions. And the way Ken communicated with Shield surprised him. They communicated freely. He himself communicated freely with Ken, of course. But mostly on general topics: heroes, Quirks, training. These two didn't choose topics. They didn't specifically look for topics, didn't adjust to each other. They just talked. It didn't matter what or how they talked. It made him jealous.
"Here's the exhibition hall. Shall we go in?"
At that moment, Ken looked at the entrance to the pavilion in a strange way. As soon as the first exhibit appeared, an amphibious fighter, the black haired friend transformed. His sarcastic, melancholic demeanor was replaced by the aggressive criticism of someone who had downed an energy drink.
"What power system does it use? How does the propulsion system switch when the fighter submerges? What kind of forces does the pilot experience?"
Setting out to learn all the features of the inventions on display, Ken dragged him along. No, Izuku was, of course, happy to see and learn about the equipment that heroes around the world would soon be using. But the shining crimson eyes of his friend were frankly frightening. It felt like he could see right through him.
"Phew. That was fun. Although that guide didn't know anything about the subject."
"Haha. Ken, your question about what semiconductors were used already touched on a trade secret."
Melissa laughed. Midoriya, meanwhile, was trying to recover, attempting to "digest" the past two hours filled with inventions, Hoshino's comments, and his constant two questions: "What is the cost?" and "Is this economically feasible?" For some reason, the question of money always interested his friend.
"Having fun, Deku?"
"AAAAH!"
Jumping back. A reflex honed through countless sparring sessions with his teacher, All Might, played a bad trick on Midoriya this time, as he landed on a person in what he thought was empty space.
"Uraraka?"
He asked in surprise, staring into Ochako's startled eyes and feeling something soft beneath him. Then, tilting his head, Izuku looked directly into black eyes.
"Yaoyorozu?"
He said slowly, feeling his cheeks begin to heat up. But the black haired girl was clearly about to surpass him in facial redness.
"Midoriya."
Kyoka Jiro announced her presence, giving the boy a withering glare. Slightly off to the side, Hoshino stood, smiling broadly, with his thumb raised. The green haired boy reflexively noted that the same pose was struck by All Might when he said, "You can do it, my boy!"
And then the boy's consciousness was swallowed by PANIC.

I felt indescribable pleasure from watching my friend's torment. Judging by Melissa's giggling, disguised as a cough, sadistic tendencies were not unique to me.
And Izuku was suffering. It seemed to me that he would rather go through our entire training course on Dagobah Beach again in a single day than face this situation. Three girls were boring holes in him with their stares. The boy himself was blushing, ready to end his life by stopping his heart from excitement and shame. And I and Melissa were watching from the sidelines.
Everyone knew no one was to blame, but the emotions. The emotions were simply indescribable. Both for the "victim" himself and for the chestnut haired girl, who was looking at the boy with something like jealousy. My idol's daughter was clearly enjoying the whole situation, but outwardly she was supporting her friends.
After five minutes of "execution," Shield decided to prevent the complete destruction of Midoriya's self esteem by suggesting everyone go to a cafe.
Further events began to irritate me. The feeling of novelty from being outside Japan quickly faded when Midoriya's classmates appeared. Melissa was quickly drawn into a conversation by a flock of the fairer sex. I, slowly sipping my coffee, listened to the conversation between Izuku and two of his classmates who had decided to work part time at the cafe.
"Psst, Midoriya, introduce us to that beauty."
Crack.
Looking in surprise at the cracked cup and the startled guys, I sadly began to wait for the check for the coffee and the broken dish. Then another Class 1A student appeared, Iida, I think. This "robot" caused even more noise, and I finally realized why Midoriya's classmates annoyed me. They were all good people with their own dreams and unusual personalities. They could become true heroes, not fakes.
But they wouldn't be able to understand me. If they could see what I saw right now, it would break them. Their so called "naivety" irritated me. So why didn't Midoriya irritate me? His fanatical, almost insane desire to be a hero, despite his lack of a Quirk and the pain of broken limbs during training, made him abnormal. Even if All Might hadn't passed his Quirk to him, even if no academy had accepted him into the hero course, he would have found a way to be a hero. He couldn't live otherwise. Midoriya was broken.
An explosion from the direction of the exhibition interrupted my thoughts.
"What's that?"
It turned out to be a robot destruction competition. Of course, Class 1A was there. At that moment, we were watching as the most stubborn fan of the Crimson Riot took sixth place in the speed of destroying I Island's robotic products. The next participant's performance gave me an excellent opportunity to compensate for my irritation with the Class 1A students. My voice boomed throughout the stadium.
"The King of Explosions, Butthurt!"
Startled eyes stared at me, and someone in the audience snorted with laughter.
"Bastard, motherfucker, die!"
For some reason, Midoriya sighed tiredly behind me.
