Modern Family: More than Family

Chapter 266: Next Morning

Haley woke up smiling.

Which became deeply embarrassing the second she realized it.

She stared at the ceiling for a moment, fully still beneath the blankets while her brain slowly replayed:

dinner,

the drive,

the kiss,

goodnight neighbor.

"Oh no."

Across the room, Alex looked up from her desk immediately.

"That is never a reassuring first sentence in the morning."

Haley pulled a pillow over her face dramatically.

"I think I'm happy."

Alex blinked once.

Then twice.

"Okay, wow." She leaned back in her chair. "That sounded genuinely upsetting to you."

"It is upsetting." Haley lowered the pillow enough to glare at the ceiling. "I had a very stable narrative going."

Alex fought a smile.

"The 'I'm heartbroken and independent' one?"

"Yes." Haley sat up slowly, hair a mess, expression conflicted. "Now suddenly he's texting me goodnight and moving back next door like some manipulative Hallmark character."

Alex looked away quickly before her face betrayed too much at the phrase next door.

Careful.

Then she asked as evenly as possible:

"How do you actually feel about that?"

Haley dropped back onto the mattress with a groan.

"That's the problem." She covered her face again. "Part of me feels calmer."

The honesty softened Alex immediately.

Because Haley rarely hid from her completely.

Then quieter:

"I didn't realize how much the empty house bothered me until he said he was coming back."

Alex's chest tightened slightly.

Because she understood that feeling too well already.

Then Haley peeked over the pillow.

"You knew, didn't you?"

Alex froze internally for half a second.

"What?"

"That he was moving back."

Technically no.

Emotionally yes.

But Alex kept her expression controlled.

"He mentioned it was temporary staying away."

Which was true.

Haley narrowed her eyes suspiciously.

"You're being weirdly calm about this."

Alex forced herself not to panic.

"I'm trying to be mature."

"That's horrifying."

But Haley smiled faintly afterward and climbed out of bed.

Then while pulling clothes from the closet, she spoke more softly.

"You know what's strange?"

"What?"

"I thought seeing him again would make everything messier." Haley paused briefly. "Instead I kind of feel like I can breathe again."

The words settled deeply into the room.

Alex looked down at her desk for a second so Haley wouldn't fully see the complicated mix of relief and guilt crossing her face.

Because hearing Haley happy mattered.

So much.

Even while every secret underneath that happiness sat heavier inside Alex's chest by the day.

Then Haley turned back toward her sister with sudden suspicion.

"Wait."

Alex immediately braced internally.

"You're smiling."

"…Am I?"

"Yes." Haley pointed accusingly. "You like this."

Alex chose her next words very carefully.

"I like seeing you less miserable."

That answer softened Haley instantly.

Because it felt true.

It was true.

Then Haley crossed the room and hugged her suddenly.

Quick.

Warm.

Trusting.

Alex closed her eyes for half a second as guilt stabbed sharply through her chest again.

Then Haley pulled back smiling faintly.

"You're my favorite person."

The sentence hit like emotional violence.

Because Alex already knew one terrible truth now:

if Haley ever stopped saying that—

it would destroy her.
