Modern Family: More than Family

Chapter 265: Not Hiding It Well

Claire watched Haley text for another minute before finally standing.

"I'm going to bed before I accidentally become emotionally invested in your messaging habits."

Haley looked up immediately.

"You already are."

"…Fair."

Then Claire paused near the stairs and looked back one last time.

Haley sat curled into the couch corner smiling faintly at her phone without realizing it.

A month ago she cried herself to sleep there.

The contrast hit hard.

Then softly:

"You seem lighter tonight."

Haley's expression shifted immediately—caught between denial and honesty.

Finally she sighed.

"I think I forgot how much energy it took to stay angry all the time."

That answer lingered quietly between them.

Then Claire smiled gently and disappeared upstairs.

Leaving Haley alone with the soft living room lights and the glow of her phone screen.

A few seconds later, another message appeared.

gael: you laughed tonight

Haley blinked once.

Then typed back carefully.

haley: unfortunately yes

Immediate reply:

gael: i missed hearing it

Her chest tightened softly.

God.

Then she stared at the message longer than necessary before answering.

haley: today felt weird

This time his reply took longer.

Finally:

gael: bad weird?

Haley thought about it honestly.

No.

Not bad.

Overwhelming maybe.

Confusing definitely.

But not bad.

Then she typed slowly.

haley: more like i forgot we could still feel like us

The typing bubble appeared immediately.

Stopped.

Started again.

Then:

gael: i don't think we ever stopped

That one hit deeper.

Because part of her feared exactly the opposite:

that what they had was gone forever and tonight only felt good because nostalgia blurred reality.

But he sounded so certain.

Then another message came through:

gael: we just got hurt

Haley closed her eyes briefly after reading that.

Simple sentence.

Still enough to sting.

Because yes.

That was the truth underneath everything.

Neither of them stopped loving.

They just stopped knowing how to hold the pain properly.

Then she curled deeper into the couch cushions and typed one final message before forcing herself to put the phone down for the night.

haley: goodnight neighbor

The response came almost instantly.

gael: goodnight haley

No flirting.

No pressure.

Just her name.

And somehow that felt more intimate than anything else tonight.
