Modern Family: More than Family

Chapter 267: Across the Lawn

By noon, his truck was parked outside the house next door.

Haley noticed immediately from the kitchen window.

And despite all her efforts to stay normal about this development—

her pulse still jumped.

Then Luke wandered into the kitchen holding cereal and glanced outside casually.

"Oh cool. Gael's back."

Haley turned too fast.

Luke blinked.

"…Why did you react like a startled deer?"

"I didn't."

"You absolutely did."

Haley grabbed coffee purely to avoid eye contact.

Across the room, Alex sat at the counter pretending to scroll through her laptop while internally preparing for psychological warfare.

Because Haley had spent the entire morning accidentally smiling every time she looked out the window.

Which unfortunately Alex noticed every single time.

Then Luke looked between both sisters suspiciously.

"Why is the atmosphere weird again?"

"Genetics," Alex answered immediately.

"Fair."

Luke accepted that disturbingly fast and wandered away.

Then Haley drifted back toward the window despite herself.

Outside, Gael carried boxes from the truck with sleeves rolled slightly up, sunlight catching against his arms while he moved across the lawn.

Then he looked up.

Directly toward the kitchen window.

And instantly spotted her standing there.

Haley froze.

For one second neither moved.

Then slowly, he smiled.

Not smug.

Not overly familiar.

Just warm.

And somehow that made it worse.

Because her body reacted immediately before her brain could reestablish dignity.

Then Haley tried to look casual and failed completely.

Alex watched the entire thing over the edge of her laptop with growing disbelief.

"This is painful to witness."

Haley jumped slightly.

"What?"

"You just flirted through a window like it's the 60's."

"I absolutely did not."

"You literally froze and smiled at each other across adjoining suburban properties."

Haley looked offended.

"When you describe it like that it sounds romantic."

Alex stared at her flatly.

"It was romantic."

Then Haley groaned softly and dropped into the kitchen chair.

"This is getting out of control."

But she was smiling again.

Alex noticed.

Again.

And despite the guilt quietly eating holes through her chest—

part of her still felt relieved seeing Haley look alive for the first time in weeks.

Then Haley rested her chin against her hand and glanced back toward the window once more.

"He really came back."

The softness in her voice made Alex look away briefly.

Because yes.

He did.

And none of them fully understood yet how much that single decision was about to change the emotional gravity of both houses again.
