Chapter 249: Waiting for Six
The house grew quieter after that.
Not tense.
Thoughtful.
Like all three of them had drifted toward the same realization:
Haley opening the door even slightly changed everything.
Claire eventually stood and moved toward the kitchen to refill coffee, leaving Alex and Gael alone on the couch for the first time since he arrived.
Alex watched her mother disappear around the corner before leaning back with a long exhale.
"Well." She rubbed at her forehead. "This entire situation somehow became even more complicated."
"That seems to happen daily."
"Yes, but now there's hope involved." She pointed at him. "Hope is dangerous. It makes people optimistic."
Despite himself, Gael smiled slightly.
Alex noticed immediately and shook her head.
"You look calmer."
The observation carried weight.
Because she knew him well enough now to see the difference.
Then she studied him more carefully.
"You missed her that badly."
Not a question.
Haley.
Gael looked down briefly before answering quietly.
"Yes."
Alex nodded slowly like hearing it aloud mattered.
Not because she doubted it—
because part of her needed reassurance that Haley's place in his life remained real and irreplaceable.
Then softer:
"She missed you too."
He looked toward her again.
Alex gave a faint humorless laugh.
"She practically admitted she was waiting for you to screw up her morning."
That sounded painfully like Haley.
Then Alex's expression shifted slightly more serious.
"You know this is the important stage now, right?"
"How?"
"She's vulnerable to you again." Alex folded one leg beneath herself. "That means every interaction matters more."
True.
Haley's reopening after weeks of distance made things fragile in a completely different way.
Then Claire returned from the kitchen carrying coffee and immediately caught the mood shift.
"What?"
Alex gestured toward Gael.
"I'm explaining that if he fumbles this recovery arc, I'll hit him with my car."
Claire blinked once.
"That escalated quickly."
"It's symbolic violence."
"That's not reassuring."
But underneath the sarcasm lived genuine protectiveness.
Because Haley beginning to trust him again meant she could be hurt again too.
Then Alex looked back toward him more quietly.
"She wants consistency now." A pause. "Not intensity."
That sentence settled into him immediately.
Because she was right.
Haley didn't need grand declarations anymore.
She needed steadiness.
Presence.
Proof.
Then Claire sat down again slowly.
"You know what I think helped this morning?"
Both looked toward her.
"You showed up uncertain." Claire's voice softened thoughtfully. "Haley's used to people trying to manage her emotions after the fallout." A faint glance toward Alex. "Especially us."
Alex winced slightly.
Fair.
Then Claire continued:
"But you looked like someone risking something instead."
That mattered.
Because Haley responded deeply to sincerity when she believed it wasn't rehearsed.
Then silence settled again while morning light stretched softly across the living room.
Finally Alex checked the time on her phone and groaned.
"I have class in thirty minutes."
Claire immediately looked relieved enough that Alex narrowed her eyes suspiciously.
"Wow. Okay."
"I didn't say anything."
"You emotionally exhaled."
Then Alex stood slowly from the couch and grabbed her bag near the stairs.
But before leaving, she paused beside him for a second.
Not touching him.
Too risky here somehow.
Still—
the closeness alone shifted the air slightly.
Then she spoke quietly enough that Claire couldn't fully hear.
"She's still in love with you." A pause. "Don't rush her because you're relieved she reopened ger heart."
The words landed with quiet force.
Not accusation.
Not jealousy.
Guidance.
Then softer:
"And don't disappear again."
Gael held her gaze steadily.
"I won't."
Alex studied him one last second like she was checking whether he truly understood the weight of that promise.
Then finally she nodded faintly and headed for the door.
Leaving him alone with Claire—
and six o'clock waiting ahead like something both hopeful and terrifying.
