Chapter 248: Too Smart for Her Own Good
Claire coughed hard into her coffee while Gael failed completely at looking natural.
Alex stared between them in silence for exactly two seconds before pointing accusingly.
"There it is. That's the face." She looked at Gael. "You absolutely saw Gloria yesterday."
Gael sighed quietly.
"Yes."
Claire closed her eyes briefly like she physically felt the inevitability of this family's conversations now.
Alex leaned back against the couch cushions slowly.
"Wow." A faint laugh escaped her. "I used to think my life would involve, like… grad school stress."
"That still sounds possible," Claire offered weakly.
"No." Alex pointed between them. "We passed possible weeks ago."
Despite herself, Claire smiled faintly into her coffee.
Then Alex looked back toward Gael more carefully.
"How is she?"
The question surprised him slightly.
Not jealousy.
Not suspicion.
Concern.
"Better," he answered softly. "Still scared."
Alex nodded immediately like she expected that answer.
"Public or private?"
Gael blinked once.
"You guessed that fast?"
Alex gave him a flat look.
"She's Gloria." Then she pointed toward Claire without even looking. "Mom would choose emotional risk before public humiliation." Another point. "Gloria would survive emotional risk to avoid public humiliation."
Claire stared at her daughter.
"That was disturbingly accurate."
"I know you people too well." Alex sighed dramatically. "That's part of my suffering."
Then she looked back toward Gael again.
"She chose private."
"Yes."
Another immediate understanding flickered across Alex's face.
Because honestly?
That made sense.
Then quieter:
"And she knows about me now."
That made Claire glance up quickly despite already suspecting it.
Alex groaned softly and leaned her head back against the couch.
"Great. Amazing. I'm officially part of the shared database."
Gael sat beside her slowly.
"She wasn't upset."
Alex looked sideways at him.
"That's because Gloria processes emotions like a romantic poet trapped in a tequila commercial."
Claire laughed before she could stop herself.
Then Alex continued more softly:
"She warned you about me, didn't she?"
Gael's expression shifted just enough to answer for him.
Alex narrowed her eyes immediately.
"What did she say?"
"That you love quietly until you don't."
The room fell briefly silent.
Because that one landed too accurately.
Alex looked away first.
Then muttered:
"…Okay rude."
But the faint color rising in her cheeks betrayed how deeply the statement affected her.
Then Claire studied both of them carefully from across the room.
And for the first time since all this began, something strange settled into place.
Not comfort exactly.
But cohesion.
The connections between all of them no longer felt random or explosive.
They were slowly becoming structured.
Intentional.
Dangerous still.
Absolutely.
But less chaotic than before.
Then Claire looked toward Gael quietly.
"And now?"
He leaned back slightly into the couch.
"Now I pick Haley up at six."
That changed the atmosphere instantly again.
Because suddenly the center of everything returned to the same person once more.
Haley.
Alex's expression softened immediately.
"She said yes."
"Yes."
Claire looked down briefly into her coffee.
Relief mixed with fear in equal measure.
Then Alex spoke quietly.
"She still loves you a ridiculous amount."
The honesty in the statement settled heavily through the room.
Because nobody there doubted it anymore.
Then softer:
"And she's starting to let herself remember that again."
