Modern Family: More than Family

Chapter 250: Trying to Breathe

The front door closed behind Alex, leaving the house suddenly quiet again.

Claire watched it for a second longer before exhaling slowly and sinking back into the armchair.

"Well," she muttered softly with a smirk, "your step-daughter is terrifyingly perceptive."

Gael leaned back against the couch with a smile, one hand rubbing briefly over his face.

"She's trying to hold everyone together."

"I know."

Claire's voice softened immediately.

Because that was the tragedy of Alex lately:

she kept carrying weight nobody asked her to hold.

Then silence settled between them again.

Not awkward.

Just full.

Haley, this morning, had changed something in both of them.

Relief mixed with fear in equal measure.

Then Claire looked toward him more carefully.

"You're nervous about later."

Not a question.

Gael laughed quietly once.

"That obvious?"

"Yes."

A small smile touched her mouth.

"Good."

He frowned slightly.

"Good?"

"You care enough to be scared of messing it up."

The answer lingered between them softly.

Then Claire stood from the chair and crossed slowly toward the couch.

The closer she got, the more the atmosphere shifted away from analysis and back toward something warmer.

Something harder to resist.

Then she sat on top of him, while his hands settled on her back.

Her hand found his the back of his head immediately.

Instinct now.

Claire traced lightly along his hair while both stayed quiet for a moment.

Finally she whispered:

"You know what I realized today?"

"What?"

"I haven't seen Haley look hopeful in weeks." A pause. "Not even a little."

The words hit deeply.

Because he knew exactly what she meant.

Then Claire looked up at him carefully.

"And somehow you showing up terrified on our porch helped more than all the careful conversations we've had with her lately."

Gael smiled faintly.

"She said I looked scared."

"You did."

Claire's fingers tightened gently around his hand.

Then quieter:

"And I think she needed to see that losing her affected you too."

The softness in Claire's voice settled into him slowly.

And suddenly the pressure of the evening ahead—the waiting, the uncertainty, the fear of hurting Haley again—pressed harder against his chest.

Claire noticed immediately.

Of course she did.

Then she shifted closer without another word and kissed him softly.

Not desperate.

Comforting.

The kind of kiss that asked nothing except:

come back to the moment for a second.

Gael melted into it almost instantly.

Because tension had been coiled tightly inside him all morning.

Haley.

Alex.

The fragile balance between everyone.

And Claire's hands sliding slowly down along his shoulders while she kissed him deeper gave him a brief escape from all of it.

Then she pulled back slightly, forehead resting against his.

"You don't have to hold the whole future in your head every minute."

A faint laugh escaped him.

"That sounds aimed at multiple people in this family."

"Yes." Claire smiled softly. "Unfortunately, all of us are catastrophically intense."

Then she kissed him again.

Longer this time.

Warmer.

The nervous energy between them slowly dissolving into touch and closeness while sunlight spilled quietly through the living room windows.

Claire climbed lightly into his lap a moment later to let his now-awakened mushroom head enter her slit, arms wrapping around his neck while he held her instinctively against him.

And for a little while, the only sound in the house became her inextinguishable moans.

they let themselves stop strategizing,

stop worrying,

stop trying to predict every possible emotional disaster ahead.

Just breathing each other in.

Kissing slowly.

Holding tightly enough to quiet the anxiety for a few stolen minutes before reality returned.
