Modern Family: More than Family

Chapter 247: The House Without Haley

After dropping Haley off, Gael sat in the parking lot for another minute watching her disappear inside the building.

She looked back once before entering.

Small thing.

Still enough to leave warmth lingering in his chest long after the doors closed behind her.

Not fixed.

But not hopeless anymore either.

Then he drove toward the Dunphy house.

This time with a completely different kind of nervousness.

Because Haley talking to him again changed the balance everywhere else too.

Especially with Alex.

By the time he pulled into the driveway, the house sat quiet under late morning sunlight.

Phil was at work.

Luke at school.

Only Claire and Alex home.

The thought alone carried dangerous intimacy now.

Then he knocked once before the door opened almost immediately.

Alex.

Of course.

One look at her face told him Haley already texted her everything.

And the second the door shut behind him, Alex crossed her arms and stared at him with disbelief.

"You ambushed her?"

"She got in the car."

"That is not the part I'm focused on."

But she was clearly relieved underneath the exasperation.

Then quieter:

"She really let you drive her?"

"Yes."

Alex looked down briefly, visibly trying to process the significance of that.

Because they both understood Haley well enough to know what it meant:

she was still hurt,

still cautious—

but no longer shutting him out completely.

Then Claire appeared from the kitchen carrying coffee.

The second she saw him, her entire expression softened instinctively before she caught herself.

Alex noticed.

Of course she noticed.

"Okay," Alex muttered while walking toward the couch. "The eye contact in this family is becoming psychologically incriminating."

Claire almost smiled despite herself.

Then she looked back toward Gael carefully.

"How did she seem?"

The question carried real concern.

Gael stepped further inside slowly.

"Tired." A pause. "Still angry." Then softer: "But willing."

That changed the room immediately.

Relief moved through both women almost visibly.

Then Alex dropped onto the couch dramatically.

"She texted me from work." Her eyes lifted toward him. "She said being around you made it harder to stay angry."

Gael exhaled quietly.

Because hearing it aloud made the morning feel more real somehow.

Then Claire sat slowly in the armchair nearby.

"And you asked to pick her up later."

Not a question.

Alex's mouth dropped open slightly.

"Oh my God, she told you that too?"

Claire blinked once.

"She told you?"

Both women turned toward each other immediately.

Then simultaneously:

"She texts you everything."

The realization hung in the room for one very awkward second.

Then Alex groaned and covered her face with one hand.

"This family is horrifyingly codependent."

"That is not the main takeaway here," Claire muttered.

But she looked relieved too.

Because Haley talking openly about him again mattered.

Then Alex lowered her hand slowly and looked toward Gael more seriously.

"She told me she misses the easy version of you two."

The sentence settled quietly through the room.

Not dramatic.

Just sad.

Then Claire looked down at her coffee for a moment before speaking softly.

"She's trying."

And somehow that meant more than optimism.

Because Haley never moved halfway emotionally.

If she was trying, she was genuinely opening the door again little by little.

Then silence settled.

Comfortable for a few seconds.

Until Alex suddenly looked between the two of them and narrowed her eyes suspiciously.

"…Why do both of you look happier today?"

Claire nearly choked on coffee.

Gael looked away immediately.

And Alex slowly sat forward on the couch.

"So...did you go to Gloria's house yesterday?"
