Chapter 246: 6 PM
Haley walked into work feeling off-balance for the rest of the morning.
Not devastated.
Not healed.
Just… unsettled in a softer way than before.
Which honestly might have been more dangerous.
Because anger had structure.
Distance had rules.
This?
This felt like slipping back toward something familiar before she fully understood whether it was safe.
Then midway through organizing displays near the front of the store, her phone buzzed.
Alex.
Of course.
Haley opened the message immediately.
alex: you left weirdly fast this morning
A faint smile touched Haley's mouth automatically.
haley: gael showed up at the house
The typing bubble appeared instantly.
Stopped.
Appeared again.
Then:
alex: WHAT
Haley actually laughed softly under her breath.
A customer glanced at her oddly.
She ignored them.
haley: apparently he decided surprise confrontation was a good strategy
Another instant reply:
alex: honestly that does sound like him
The message hit differently now.
Because Alex still sounded so normal talking about him.
Warm.
Protective.
Familiar.
Haley's chest tightened briefly before she pushed the feeling away.
Then another message came through:
alex: how did it go
Haley stared at that one longer.
How did it go?
Then finally:
haley: i got in the car
Three dots appeared immediately.
Stopped.
Started again.
alex: and
Haley leaned lightly against the counter, thinking.
Then slowly typed:
haley: and i still don't know how to stop missing him when i'm around him
This time Alex took longer to respond.
Long enough that Haley frowned faintly at the screen.
Then finally:
alex: i don't think feelings stop just because people are hurt
The sentence settled strangely deep inside Haley.
Simple.
True.
Painful.
Then another message:
alex: are you okay
Haley stared at the words for a moment.
Because the honest answer was complicated.
Then she typed carefully:
haley: i think i'm less angry when i'm actually with him
That truth frightened her slightly.
Because anger had protected her from wanting him too quickly again.
Without it—
everything became messy.
Then Alex replied:
alex: maybe because you finally got to talk instead of just imagine things
Haley read that twice.
And annoyingly, it made sense.
Because over the last month, so much of her grief had lived inside silence and assumptions and unanswered questions.
This morning felt different.
Not fixed.
Not resolved.
But real.
Then another customer approached and Haley locked her phone quickly, forcing herself back into work mode.
Still—
throughout the entire afternoon,
one thought kept quietly returning:
6 PM.
