Modern Family: More than Family

Chapter 244: Not Fixed, But Trying

By the time they neared Haley's workplace, the tension in the car had changed shape.

Still fragile.

Still uncertain.

But no longer sharp enough to cut every silence apart.

Haley sat with one knee pulled slightly toward herself now, absentmindedly tracing patterns against the sleeve of her sweater while traffic crawled through downtown.

Then she glanced toward him again.

"You know what annoys me?"

"What?"

"That this feels nice."

The honesty almost made him smile.

Haley noticed immediately and pointed at him.

"Don't."

"I didn't say anything."

"You thought something."

"That's not illegal yet."

"Debatable."

That finally pulled a small laugh from both of them.

And hearing her laugh again after weeks of distance hit harder than he expected.

Haley noticed his expression shift slightly afterward.

Her own softened too.

Then she looked out the windshield again.

"I missed this part."

"The arguing?"

"The easy part." A pause. "The version of us that didn't feel like work."

That settled quietly between them.

Because lately every interaction carried weight.

History.

Pain.

But this?

This felt closer to what they used to be before everything fractured.

Then Haley spoke more carefully.

"I'm not saying I forgive you."

"I know."

"And I'm still confused."

"I know."

She glanced sideways at him again.

"You saying 'I know' to everything is weirdly calming."

Gael laughed softly.

"I'll take that as progress."

"Don't get optimistic."

Too late.

Then the building where she worked appeared ahead.

Neither of them seemed ready for the drive to end.

Haley noticed that too.

Which made it worse somehow.

Then he pulled into the parking lot and parked near the entrance.

Silence settled again after the engine turned off.

Different silence now.

Less avoidance.

More hesitation.

Like neither fully knew how to separate after finally speaking honestly again.

Then Haley unbuckled slowly but didn't open the door immediately.

Her fingers lingered against the seatbelt strap while she stared ahead through the windshield.

Finally she spoke quietly.

"You really came here not knowing if I'd even look at you."

"Yes."

"Why are you like that?"

Gael smiled faintly.

"You loved me partly because I'm stubborn."

Haley groaned softly.

"That's annoyingly true."

Then she looked toward him fully again.

And for the first time all morning, the guardedness in her eyes eased enough for him to see the old warmth underneath.

Still there.

Bruised.

But alive.

Then she whispered:

"I'm still scared of getting hurt again."

The vulnerability in the confession tightened something deep in his chest.

"I know."

Haley studied him for another long second.

Then finally she nodded faintly to herself like she'd made some small internal decision.

Not reconciliation.

Not yet.

But maybe willingness.

Then she reached for the door handle—

and paused when his voice stopped her softly.

"Haley?"

She turned back toward him.

And after a brief hesitation, Gael asked quietly:

"What time should I pick you up from work?"
