Modern Family: More than Family

Chapter 243: Red Lights

Traffic slowed near an intersection downtown, forcing the car into a long red light.

Neither of them seemed eager for the drive to end anymore.

Haley sat turned slightly toward the window still, though now and then he caught her glancing at him briefly before looking away again.

Studying him.

Comparing this version to the one she remembered.

Then she spoke quietly.

"You cut your hair."

Gael blinked once.

"That's your observation?"

"I'm easing into vulnerability."

That almost made him laugh.

Then Haley shrugged lightly.

"It looks good."

The compliment slipped out naturally enough that she immediately looked annoyed at herself afterward.

"Don't enjoy that too much."

"Too late."

She rolled her eyes but didn't fully hide the faint smile this time.

Progress.

Small.

Fragile.

Still real.

Then Haley's expression softened again as she watched him for another moment.

"You really do look exhausted."

Gael exhaled quietly through his nose.

"I haven't slept great."

"Because of me?"

The question came too fast, like she regretted asking it immediately afterward.

But he answered just as quickly.

"Partly."

Haley looked down at her hands.

And suddenly the atmosphere changed again.

Less guarded.

More personal.

Then softly:

"I hated how easy it was to stop talking to you at first."

That surprised him.

Haley continued before he could answer.

"I was so angry that everything just… snapped." Her voice lowered. "Like my brain decided if I kept hearing your voice I'd forgive you too quickly."

The honesty in the confession settled heavily between them.

Then she laughed once under her breath.

"Turns out avoiding someone and getting over them are apparently different things."

Gael's chest tightened.

Because there it was again:

she still loved him.

Even now.

Then the light turned green and the car moved forward again.

Haley watched the city pass outside quietly before asking the question that had clearly been sitting underneath everything else.

"Did you mean it?"

Gael glanced toward her briefly.

"What?"

"When you said you loved me."

No anger in the question.

Just vulnerability.

And somehow that made it harder.

Then he answered carefully.

"Yes."

Immediate.

Certain.

Haley's eyes closed briefly after hearing it.

Like some part of her still needed that reassurance despite everything.

Then she whispered:

"That's what makes this so hard."

The sadness in her voice filled the car softly.

"Because if you'd just lied to me…" She swallowed once. "I could hate you cleanly."

But he hadn't lied.

And she knew it.

That was the problem.

Then she looked toward him again, eyes more open than before.

"I still don't fully understand how someone can love multiple people without one of them becoming less important."

There it was.

The real fracture underneath all of this.

Not betrayal alone.

Incomprehension.

Then Gael slowed slightly near another light before answering.

"They don't feel smaller to me."

Haley stayed quiet, listening carefully.

"It's different with each person," he continued softly. "But different doesn't mean lesser."

Haley absorbed that silently.

Not agreeing.

Not rejecting.

Thinking.

Then she whispered almost to herself:

"I used to think love was supposed to simplify things."

Gael looked at her carefully.

"And now?"

Haley laughed weakly.

"Now I think love might actually just reveal how complicated people already are."

That answer stayed with him the rest of the drive.
