Modern Family: More than Family

Chapter 242: Passenger Seat

The walk to the car felt strangely fragile.

Not awkward exactly.

Just careful.

Like both of them understood one wrong sentence could crack the moment apart before it properly began.

Haley stayed half a step ahead of him down the driveway, arms folded lightly against the morning chill while he unlocked the passenger door for her automatically.

She paused at that.

Small habit.

Old habit.

Something about it clearly hit her unexpectedly.

Then she slid into the seat without comment.

Gael walked around to the driver's side trying not to let relief settle too visibly into his expression.

Step one accomplished:

she hadn't slammed the door in his face.

The bar was currently subterranean.

Then silence filled the car as he pulled away from the curb.

Haley looked out the window at first, watching neighborhoods pass while quiet tension lingered between them.

Not hostile tension.

The kind born from too many unresolved feelings sitting too close together.

Finally Haley spoke first.

"You look tired."

The concern slipped out before she could stop it.

Gael glanced at her briefly.

"So do you."

"That wasn't an answer."

A faint smile tugged at him despite himself.

Haley noticed immediately and rolled her eyes lightly.

"Don't get encouraged. I'm still evaluating you."

"Understood."

That almost felt normal.

Then Haley leaned her head lightly against the window.

"I can't believe I got in the car."

"You didn't have to."

"I know."

The immediate answer carried weight.

Because that was the point:

she chose this.

Then quieter:

"I almost didn't."

That hurt to hear even though he expected it.

Gael kept his eyes on the road.

"What changed your mind?"

Haley stayed silent for several seconds before answering softly.

"You looked scared."

The honesty surprised him.

Then she shrugged faintly.

"You usually don't."

That observation lingered between them.

Because Haley had always been unusually good at reading emotional shifts underneath confidence.

Then she added quietly:

"And part of me wanted to know if you'd still come anyway."

Gael's grip tightened slightly on the steering wheel.

"I would've."

"I know."

The certainty in her voice hit harder than expected.

Because despite everything, Haley still knew him deeply.

Then silence returned for a while.

The city slowly waking around them.

Morning traffic building.

Eventually Haley spoke again without looking at him.

"Alex said you weren't doing great."

His pulse flickered once at Alex's name.

Careful.

"She worries too much."

Haley gave him a faint side glance.

"No. She worries the correct amount. She just hides it better than everybody else."

True.

Then Haley's expression softened slightly.

"She's been carrying me a lot lately."

Guilt twisted low in his chest immediately.

Not visible externally.

Still sharp.

Then Haley continued quietly:

"I don't think I realized before how much she notices when I'm falling apart."

Gael swallowed once.

Because Alex was carrying far more than Haley understood.

Then softly:

"She loves you a lot."

Haley finally looked at him fully at that.

And the warmth in her eyes when talking about her sister almost made the guilt worse.

"I know." A small smile touched her mouth. "She's kind of my favorite person."

The sentence lingered heavily in the car.

Then Haley looked away again before speaking more quietly.

"You know what sucks?"

"What?"

"I still miss talking to you like this."

That one landed deep.

Not dramatic.

Not angry.

Just sad.

Then she laughed weakly under her breath.

"Which honestly feels pathetic considering everything."

"It's not pathetic."

Haley rubbed lightly at her forehead.

"Maybe not." A pause. "But it's confusing."

Gael nodded slowly.

"Yeah."

For a few moments after that, neither spoke.

And strangely—

the silence no longer felt like distance.

It felt like two people slowly remembering how to exist near each other again.
