Chapter 226: The Shape of a Future
They stayed on the couch for hours after that.
Talking.
Thinking.
Occasionally making out between conversations like neither of them could fully stop reaching for the other anymore.
And slowly, something strange began forming beneath all the emotional chaos:
structure.
Not fantasy.
Not reckless passion alone.
Plans.
Then Alex sat up slightly and pointed at him with sudden seriousness.
"Okay. Important question."
"What?"
"If this insane future somehow works…" She narrowed her eyes. "How exactly are you imagining it?"
Gael leaned back slightly against the couch.
"Honestly?"
"That's generally the preferred format now, yes."
Then he answered carefully.
"I imagine Haley happy again first."
The immediate answer softened something inside her.
Then he continued:
"I imagine Claire not living in shame constantly." A pause. "Gloria not feeling trapped between love and guilt." His eyes settled on Alex again. "And you not having to split yourself emotionally every day."
The sincerity in the vision hit her harder than expected.
Because none of it centered on possession.
It centered on survival.
Then Alex folded one leg beneath herself thoughtfully.
"And you think all of us can coexist without destroying each other eventually?"
"I think people can love more than one person honestly." Small pause. "The hard part is fear, insecurity, and dishonesty."
That sounded dangerously reasonable to her now.
A month ago she would've rejected the premise immediately.
Now?
Now she'd already lived enough emotional complexity to know love rarely behaved cleanly.
Then quieter:
"I think Haley could maybe understand Claire and Gloria eventually." Alex looked down briefly. "Especially if she gets back together with you first."
The words still felt strange aloud.
Not because she doubted them.
Because she was actively planning around sharing the man she loved with her sister emotionally.
Absolutely surreal.
Then Alex laughed softly once under her breath.
"My therapist would retire on the spot."
"That bad?"
"I'm discussing strategic integration inside a potential family polycule."
That actually pulled a laugh from both of them.
Then she quieted again.
"But me…" Her expression shifted slightly more vulnerable. "I think my part will hurt her most."
Gael frowned faintly.
"Why?"
"Because I'm her safe person."
There it was again.
The truth neither could emotionally escape.
Haley expected betrayal from romance now.
Maybe eventually even from parents.
But not from Alex.
Then softly:
"She tells me things she doesn't tell anyone else." A small pause. "And right now she still believes I'm fully on her side."
Gael reached for her hand slowly.
"You are on her side."
Alex's eyes lifted toward his immediately.
Because somehow that mattered desperately.
Then she whispered:
"It doesn't feel like it sometimes."
The guilt remained lodged deep inside her despite everything else now growing between them.
Then Gael answered quietly:
"You're trying to build a future where nobody has to lose love."
The sentence settled heavily between them.
Because yes—
that really was the emotional core of all this now.
Impossible as it sounded.
Then Alex leaned back against the couch again and stared toward the city lights thoughtfully.
"You know what the weirdest part is?"
"What?"
"I think part of Haley would actually understand eventually." Her voice lowered carefully. "Not immediately. Not without pain." A faint sad smile touched her mouth. "But she loves people too deeply to stay rigid forever."
That possibility lingered softly in the room afterward.
Fragile.
Dangerous.
Hopeful.
