Chapter 225: Building Something Dangerous
The kiss lingered softly between them before Alex finally pulled back.
Not because she wanted distance.
Because her emotions already felt dangerously deep tonight.
Then she rested her forehead lightly against his chest and exhaled slowly.
"I really am becoming one of those people who build their life around erratic decisions."
Gael brushed gently through her hair.
"You're becoming someone who stopped lying to herself."
That landed harder than she expected.
Because Alex spent most of her life intellectualizing feelings instead of surrendering to them.
Now suddenly she was standing inside emotions too large to fully control.
Then she looked up at him carefully.
"If we actually try to make this real someday…" Her voice softened slightly. "We need to do it differently than before."
"Agreed."
Immediate.
That mattered to her.
Then Alex moved toward the couch and curled one leg beneath herself while thinking aloud now, analytical instincts returning.
"Okay." She pointed vaguely between them. "No emotional isolation. That's how all of this escalated."
Gael sat beside her quietly listening.
Alex continued:
"Claire and Gloria both got emotionally dependent on secrecy itself." A pause. "The hidden intensity made everything stronger."
Interesting observation.
Probably true.
Then she looked at him directly.
"If we build anything real, it has to survive openness eventually." Her eyes narrowed slightly. "Otherwise we're just recreating addictive chaos."
The clarity in her thinking made the future feel strangely more stable.
Not safe.
But intentional.
Then quieter:
"And Haley needs agency when the truth comes out."
That mattered most.
Because Alex refused to let Haley become cornered by revelations again.
Then she admitted softly:
"I think part of why she broke so hard before was because everyone else already understood the situation before she did."
True.
Claire.
Gloria.
Gael.
They all processed gradually while Haley got hit all at once.
Then Alex folded her arms loosely.
"I won't do that to her again."
The conviction in her voice settled deeply.
Then silence stretched comfortably between them for a while.
Not empty silence.
Domestic silence.
And that realization suddenly startled Alex.
Because she could already picture this too easily:
coming here after class,
falling asleep on the couch together,
building routines.
Then she laughed softly under her breath.
"What?"
"I just realized I'm mentally decorating a future that doesn't even exist yet."
Gael smiled faintly.
"It exists emotionally already."
That sentence sent warmth through her immediately.
Alex noticed and groaned softly.
"This is ridiculous. I'm becoming responsive to cheesy sentences."
But she leaned closer anyway.
Then her expression quieted again.
"You know what I keep thinking about?"
"What?"
"The elevator."
The memory shifted the atmosphere instantly.
Alex's voice softened further.
"You stopped me from leaving."
"Yes."
"And part of me's still relieved you did."
The honesty in that confession felt intimate in a deeper way than physical touch.
Because it acknowledged choice.
Mutual choice.
Then she whispered:
"I think if you let me walk away that night, I would've spent years regretting it."
That landed heavily between them.
Because both knew it was true.
Then Alex rested lightly against his chest again.
