Chapter 227: The Secret Shape of the Future
The conversation stretched deep into the night.
Sometimes analytical.
Sometimes emotional.
Sometimes interrupted by kisses that started soft and turned heated fast enough to leave Alex breathless against him before either remembered they were supposed to be discussing strategy instead of losing themselves in each other again.
At one point she ended up half-curled against him on the couch, fingers tangled in the front of his shirt while he kissed slowly along her jaw and neck while his hands roamed freely along her bosom.
Not reckless this time.
Intimate.
Alex closed her eyes briefly, overwhelmed again by how naturally closeness with him already fit into her life emotionally.
Then she pulled back just enough to breathe and laughed softly under her breath.
"This is genuinely dangerous."
"What is?"
"How quickly I adapted to this." Her fingers brushed lightly along his wrist. "Like my brain already categorized you as essential."
Then she quieted again, thoughts clearly shifting back toward Haley.
Always Haley eventually.
Alex leaned back against the couch cushions thoughtfully.
"You know what I think the real problem is?"
"What?"
"Shock." She looked toward the city lights beyond the windows. "Haley didn't get time to adjust before everything exploded."
True.
Then Alex continued slowly, thinking aloud now.
"She found out about Claire and Gloria all at once. It made the whole thing feel like betrayal instead of evolution."
Gael listened carefully while she worked through the thought.
Then her eyes sharpened slightly.
"What if we change that part?"
"How?"
Alex hesitated briefly.
Because even to her, the idea sounded emotionally manipulative.
Still—
the more she thought about it, the more it felt survivable.
Then quietly:
"What if Haley only sees us as friends for now?"
Gael stayed silent, letting her continue.
Alex shifted closer unconsciously while speaking.
"You and I don't suddenly become a secret relationship she discovers later." Her voice lowered thoughtfully. "We become close slowly in front of her."
Then Alex explained further:
"She already trusts me completely. She trusts you too, underneath everything." A pause. "So if over time she sees us naturally becoming important to each other…" Her eyes lowered briefly. "Maybe eventually it won't feel like I stole something from her."
The vulnerability underneath the idea hurt.
Because Alex's greatest fear truly wasn't judgment.
It was Haley feeling replaced.
Then she whispered:
"I think I could survive her anger." Small pause. "I don't think I could survive her looking at me like I betrayed our whole relationship."
That honesty shifted the atmosphere again.
Then Gael brushed gently through her hair.
"You're trying to give her time."
"Yes." Immediate answer. "Time to heal. Time to trust again. Time to see that loving someone doesn't automatically erase other love."
Then Alex laughed softly once.
"God. Listen to me." She covered her eyes briefly. "I'm literally designing a long-term integration strategy for my sister and the man I'm secretly in love with."
But beneath the humor lived real fear.
Then quieter:
"And it has to stay between us." Her eyes met his steadily now. "Us. Claire. Gloria." A pause. "Nobody else can ever know this plan existed."
Because if Haley ever realized her adjustment had been anticipated and managed strategically—
the betrayal would become infinitely worse.
Then Alex whispered:
"We take that part to our graves."
The room fell silent afterward.
Not because the plan sounded malicious.
Because it sounded heartbreakingly careful.
Built entirely around minimizing pain for someone they all loved.
Then Gael asked quietly:
"And if she never accepts it?"
Alex's expression softened immediately.
"Then I tell her the truth anyway someday." Her voice lowered. "And I let her decide whether she still wants me in her life."
There it was.
The risk she already understood she was taking.
Then silence settled again before Alex suddenly kissed him hard enough to interrupt the heaviness entirely.
Emotion flooded back instantly:
want,
attachment,
relief.
Gael pulled her closer immediately while Alex melted against him with a quiet sound against his mouth, months of emotional repression and overthinking finally replaced for one suspended moment by pure feeling.
Then she broke the kiss breathlessly and rested her forehead against his.
"You realize this plan only works if we're patient."
"Yes."
"And if you accidentally look at me like this in front of Haley too early, we're doomed."
That actually made him laugh softly.
Alex smiled despite herself.
Then quieter:
"I can do patient." Her fingers intertwined slowly with his. "As long as eventually I don't have to hide loving you anymore."
