Modern Family: More than Family

Chapter 224: Choosing Both

Gael looked at her quietly for several long seconds after that.

And Alex suddenly felt exposed in a way she hated.

Because unlike most people, he never brushed past the core of what she said.

He saw it fully.

Then he rested one hand gently against her face.

"You're not trying to replace Haley."

Immediate answer.

Certain answer.

Alex closed her eyes briefly at the tenderness in his voice.

Because that fear had been eating at her constantly.

Then quieter:

"You love her too."

The statement cracked something open inside her chest instantly.

Because yes.

That was the impossible truth she kept trying to separate:

her love for Haley and her love for him existed simultaneously.

Different.

Equally real.

Then Alex whispered shakily:

"She's my person."

"She's been my person my entire life." A faint laugh escaped her. "Even when she's chaotic and emotionally reckless and steals my sweaters."

Gael smiled faintly.

Then Alex's expression tightened again.

"And now I'm lying to her every day."

The guilt returned immediately.

But this time Gael didn't argue with it.

Didn't try to erase it.

Instead he said quietly:

"You're choosing time because you think it gives her the best chance to survive this."

Alex looked at him carefully.

Because that was exactly the distinction she desperately needed someone to understand.

Not dishonesty for convenience.

Delay for protection.

Then she leaned back lightly against the windows and looked out at the city.

"You know what scares me most?"

"What?"

"That part of me already thinks of a future with you as real." Her voice lowered slightly. "Like my brain already accepted this as something permanent."

The honesty in the statement deepened the atmosphere instantly.

Because she rarely allowed herself to commit to uncertainty.

Then softer:

"And that means eventually I'll have to risk losing Haley for it."

There it was.

The central tragedy underneath everything.

Then Gael stepped behind her slowly, arms wrapping carefully around her waist while both looked out over the city lights together.

Alex relaxed into him automatically now.

Another terrifying realization.

Then he spoke quietly near her ear.

"I don't want a future that costs you her."

Alex's throat tightened slightly.

"Life might not give us a version where nobody gets hurt."

"No."

The honesty mattered.

No fantasy promises.

No pretending impossible outcomes were guaranteed.

Then Alex turned slowly within his arms to face him.

"But you still want to try anyway."

"Yes."

Always that certainty.

God.

Alex hated how much she needed it now.

Then she laughed softly once under her breath.

"You know, a year ago if somebody told me I'd willingly participate in a complicated polyamorous family disaster…" She shook her head faintly. "I would've recommended psychiatric evaluation."

"That bad?"

"That specific."

That finally pulled a real laugh from him.

Alex smiled instinctively hearing it.

Then her expression softened again.

And suddenly the room felt quieter.

More intimate.

Then she whispered:

"I think I'm done pretending this is temporary."

The confession landed heavily.

Because this was the real threshold now:

not attraction,

not emotional dependency,

not crisis bonding.

Commitment.

Then she kissed him slowly.

Not desperate.

Not conflicted.

Certain.

And somewhere deep inside herself, Alex realized she had already made the choice she'd been trying to delay for days now.

She was going to fight for both of them:

him,

and Haley.

No matter how impossible that became.
