Chapter 127 127: Divided Attention
Neither moved to end the call.
That was the problem now.
Not temptation.
Attachment.
The city lights reflected across the penthouse windows while Haley's unread message still glowed faintly on the kitchen counter inside.
Gloria broke the silence first.
"You know what I realized tonight?"
Her voice sounded calmer now.
Almost resigned.
"I don't even want fantasies anymore." A quiet pause. "I just want more time with you."
That sentence changed something.
Because fantasies belonged to imagination.
Escapism.
Temporary desire.
Time belonged to real life.
Gael looked back toward the skyline stretching endlessly beyond the balcony.
"You're making this harder."
A faint laugh escaped her.
"I'm aware."
But neither sounded playful anymore.
The emotional honesty between them had stripped away most of the flirtation by now.
Then Gloria's tone shifted slightly.
More vulnerable.
"Do you think badly of me?"
Direct question.
Important one.
Because underneath everything else, Gloria still cared what kind of woman this made her.
Gael answered immediately.
"No."
The certainty in the response quieted her for a second.
Then she exhaled softly.
"Jay keeps asking if something's wrong."
That landed heavily.
Because now the emotional consequences were spreading beyond private tension.
"He notices distance," she continued quietly. "I keep telling him I'm tired."
The guilt in her voice felt sharper tonight.
Less abstract now.
More personal.
Then she surprised him again.
"I almost told him."
Gael straightened slightly against the railing.
"What?"
"Not everything." Gloria laughed softly once at the absurdity of the situation. "Obviously not everything." Another pause. "But I almost told him I've been unhappy lately."
Because she wasn't actually unhappy.
Not in the simple sense.
She was emotionally awakened in a place she couldn't ethically follow.
That distinction mattered.
Then Gloria's voice lowered further.
"You know what scares me?" she asked quietly. "Part of me wants you to ask me to come there."
The penthouse suddenly felt much larger and much more dangerous all at once.
Because for the first time, the possibility entered the conversation directly.
Not implied.
Not danced around.
Real.
Gael stayed silent for a second too long.
And Gloria noticed immediately.
"That hesitation was not reassuring."
The softness in her voice carried nervousness now too.
Real nervousness.
Because suddenly they were standing at the edge of something irreversible.
Then Haley's message buzzed again inside the apartment.
A second notification.
The timing cut through the atmosphere sharply.
Reality intruding.
Gloria heard it again through the phone and went quiet.
When she spoke next, her voice sounded sadder somehow.
"You should check it."
Gael finally stepped back inside from the balcony and checked the phone.
Haley:
made it home alive
also i miss you already which feels clingy considering i saw you today
Another message followed immediately after:
wait no
emotionally attached sounds better than clingy
Despite everything, a small smile pulled briefly at his mouth.
Gloria heard the silence through the call.
"She makes you softer," she said quietly.
Another painfully accurate observation.
Then finally, for the first time that night, Gloria sounded tired instead of intoxicated by the connection between them.
"I think we should stop talking at night."
The sentence came across as fragile.
Because now she genuinely meant it.
And somewhere beneath the emotional chaos of the moment—
both of them knew she was probably right.
