Chapter 128 128: Temporary Distance
The next few days felt strangely disciplined.
Gloria stopped calling.
Stopped texting late at night.
Stopped creating reasons to linger during family gatherings.
And the restraint changed the atmosphere around every interaction immediately.
At Sunday dinner, she laughed with everyone normally,
sat beside Jay,
asked Haley about internship projects,
teased Phil about his latest home-improvement disaster.
Perfectly composed.
But now every glance toward Gael felt measured.
Controlled too quickly afterward.
Claire noticed instantly.
Of course she did.
Claire also noticed the absence.
The emotional current between them had gone quieter.
Not gone.
Contained.
That realization unsettled her more than she expected.
Meanwhile Haley remained obliviously happy.
Which somehow made everything worse.
Her internship kept accelerating, and she carried herself with a confidence that transformed the entire family dynamic around her.
Even Jay started treating her differently now.
"You're becoming competent professionally," he informed her over dinner.
Haley pointed her fork toward him dramatically.
"You say that like it's a medical diagnosis."
"It might be."
Phil nearly choked laughing.
The table dissolved into overlapping conversation again afterward while Gloria smiled at Haley warmly from across the table.
And for a brief second, guilt crossed her face so visibly that Gael noticed immediately.
Because Haley wasn't just innocent in all this anymore.
She was genuinely building a future around him.
That changed the emotional stakes completely.
Later that evening, after dinner ended and everyone scattered naturally through the house, Claire stepped outside onto the patio alone carrying two wine glasses.
She handed one toward Gael without explanation.
They stood quietly beside the pool while voices drifted faintly from inside.
Then Claire spoke without looking at him.
"She's pulling away on purpose."
Direct observation.
No need to specify who.
Gael accepted the wine glass.
"Yes."
Claire nodded slowly.
For a while she stayed silent afterward, watching reflections move across the pool water.
Then:
"That's probably smart."
The sentence sounded more complicated than supportive.
Because now Claire occupied a strange emotional position:
aware of Gloria,
aware of herself,
aware of Haley,
and increasingly aware of how emotionally entangled everyone had become.
Then she glanced sideways toward him.
"You know the weird part?"
"What?"
"I think the distance is making it worse."
That honesty landed quietly between them.
Claire laughed faintly at herself afterward.
"God. Listen to me." She shook her head once. "I sound like I'm analyzing an affair before it even exists."
But both of them knew it already existed emotionally.
Neither said that aloud.
Then Claire leaned lightly against the railing beside him.
"You know what this whole thing reminds me of?"
Gael looked toward her.
"The beginning of bad decisions." A small pause. "Not the dramatic part. The rational part before it."
That felt painfully accurate.
Because nobody here thought they were villains.
Just lonely.
Seen.
Emotionally awake in dangerous directions.
Then Claire surprised herself again.
"If you're going to hurt Haley," she said quietly, "do it early."
The sentence entered the night heavily.
Not threatening.
Not emotional.
Protective.
Gael held her gaze for a second longer than usual.
Claire looked away first.
Because underneath the warning lived another truth she clearly hated admitting:
part of her already understood exactly why Gloria was struggling to let go.
