Chapter 126 126: City Lights
Neither of them spoke for several seconds after that.
The silence didn't feel empty anymore.
It felt inhabited.
Gloria stayed on the other end of the call breathing quietly while the city stretched endlessly beneath the penthouse balcony.
Then she laughed softly once under her breath.
"This is insane."
Not playful.
Not dramatic.
Just honest.
Gael rested one hand against the railing while traffic moved far below in ribbons of white and red.
"You can still stop."
"I know."
But she didn't hang up.
Instead Gloria spoke again after another pause.
"What does it look like?"
"The penthouse?"
"Yes."
The question sounded harmless.
It wasn't.
Because she wasn't asking about architecture.
She was imagining herself there.
Gael looked back through the glass walls behind him:
low lighting,
open skyline,
quiet luxury,
space designed for adulthood instead of family warmth.
"Too modern," he answered. "Too much glass."
A smile touched Gloria's voice faintly.
"That sounds exactly like somewhere you would live."
He could picture her now too:
sitting barefoot on the couch,
wine glass in hand,
city lights reflecting across the windows.
That thought alone shifted the atmosphere again.
Gloria exhaled softly through the phone.
"You know what's frightening?"
"What?"
"I'm not even thinking about sex anymore."
The honesty of the sentence hit harder than flirtation would have.
Because now the emotional affair had become undeniable.
She missed:
talking to him,
being understood by him,
the feeling of being chosen by his attention.
That was far more dangerous than physical attraction alone.
"I think about calling you when something funny happens," she admitted quietly. "Or when I'm irritated. Or when I can't sleep." A small pause. "That's not normal."
No.
It wasn't.
The city wind moved colder across the balcony now while Gael closed his eyes briefly.
"You're getting attached."
Another silence followed.
Then Gloria answered softly:
"I think I already am."
Suddenly the situation crossed into emotionally irreversible territory even without a single physical line fully broken yet.
Inside the penthouse, his phone buzzed with another notification.
Haley.
The timing felt almost cruel.
Gloria heard the vibration faintly through the call.
"Her?"
Direct question.
Gael looked toward the phone lighting faintly against the kitchen counter inside.
"Yes."
A complicated silence followed.
Not jealousy exactly.
Reality.
Gloria spoke first.
"She loves you."
The certainty in her voice made the sentence heavier.
Because she understood Haley clearly now.
Maybe better than anyone else did.
"She deserves somebody uncomplicated," Gloria continued quietly.
The guilt in her voice sounded real again.
Not performative.
And for the first time that night, cracks entered her composure.
"You know what the worst part is?" she asked softly. "If this were just physical, I think I could stop."
Because both of them knew she was right.
Lust fades easier than emotional dependence.
Then Gloria laughed faintly again, though it sounded tired this time.
"Look at us." A pause. "We haven't even kissed and somehow this already feels like cheating."
Because emotionally it was.
Neither said it aloud.
Didn't need to.
The silence afterward stretched intimate and adulterous all at once.
Then finally Gloria spoke again, quieter than before.
"I should let you answer her message."
But she still didn't hang up immediately.
